Of course it’s a political decision, but so is allowing people to out to the supermarket for example. It’s all decided by politicians as worth the risk when balanced with other factors. And it’s of course ok to question or disagree with that. I completely understand the concerns of nursery workers, especially those who are vulnerable or have vulnerable contacts. However, the fact that small children and babies need close and almost constant contact, lots of hands-on care, close interaction and monitoring - all the things that increase the risk of transmitting diseases, whether covid transmission is high within nurseries or not - that also make it almost impossible to work with them around even for parents who can work from home. There isn’t any way to change that. The government has prioritised parents of preschoolers being able to work (plus of course the economic aspects of private childcare).

Our nursery have just sent a list of new asks following their updated risk assessment following the Govts decision to stay open:

  • weekly testing for all staff members as of next week (privately paid for by nursery)
  • clear visors to be worn by staff at drop off and handover. Parents already requested to wear masks unless exempt, and if exempt they are asking for proof of this to be shown to nursery manager.

If the nursery DD goes to can put extra safety measures in place - and it doesn’t belong to a huge chain so have a bottomless pit of money - then I don’t get why others can’t do similar. We’re in an area with low rates currently and I can only imagine that these extra measures, along with the ones parents/children already had to adhere to following them reopening last year, will keep the chances of infection low. One can hope anyway.

BBC news are running a story on this matter should anyone care to view it.

@Thegirlhasnoname you can't ask someone for proof of exemption.
