This is awful news. I really hope the government take this news seriously and does everything to keep this variant from spreading here. Sadly I don’t have much confidence they will have learnt this lesson

No one needs to hear this sort of news.

SeldomFollowedIt · 04/01/2021 07:11

Link?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 04/01/2021 07:12

where are you getting this from? I haven't seen that news. Do you have a link?

Saylethewayles · 04/01/2021 07:13

Please don't just post stuff like that if you aren't going to provide a source.

Ninbus · 04/01/2021 07:15

Sorry I didn’t realise it was such a new story to people. Hope this link works.

OK so the actual story is that it may make the vaccine 20% less effective but that they could tweak it if needed in 4-6 weeks.

Forgetmenot157 · 04/01/2021 07:17

For God sake this is not news... Read the article... One person says it may not react as fast to the vaccine... Then goes on the say that a tweak to the vacci e will take about a month if they have too.... Stop fucking scaremongering!!!!

Ninbus · 04/01/2021 07:17

It was also mentioned by Devi sridhar on Twitter- vaccine may not work - not definitely won’t

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/south-african-coronavirus-mutation-may-beat-jabs-lrjtnhrgt

I’m not clicking a mail link, but the original quote on Times radio is not quite as alarming as the headline “I’d be more worried about the SouthAfrican variant than the Kent one” so no evidence that it won’t work, just a theoretical discussion

Forgetmenot157 · 04/01/2021 07:19

I love the fact on here the daily mail used to be laughed at anything they put... However anything that may scare people about covid you all jump on and speak about it like its gospel!

I hope mods take this down as it just spreads more fear!

It’s not news and sadly I don’t think there are lessons the OP will ever learn. It’s hard to find a form of words to describe how appalling this post it.

Well it’s still isn’t great news. They would have revaccinate everyone again? I didn’t expect to be accused of scaremongering by so many people. I might just report this thread myself and ask to have it removed

PicsInRed · 04/01/2021 07:30

YANBU OP, it it isn't just "tweaking", its wholescale re-manufacture and re-doing those jabs already done. Many, many months of advance production wasted and starting from scratch.

It would be appallling news if true.

Lemons1571 · 04/01/2021 07:32

Sarah Gilbert addressed this is an interview last week. They can tweak the vaccine. I suppose the biggest issue is the subsequent time taken for production and distribution.

Ninbus · 04/01/2021 07:33

You haven't said anything wrong OP. Unfortunately it is a grave concern.

Not sure if this is behind a paywall?

My heart sank when I read it.

It’s not news. It’s journalist trawling the bottom of an academic barrel to get a quote that is pure speculation. That’s been pointed out to you but you keep on trying to make out it’s a fact. What do you expect to achieve and why? These are questions you need to ask yourself. And then if you can answer them, get therapy.
Ninbus · 04/01/2021 07:40

Thanks picsinred it’s not just the South African strain is it? It’s the constantly evolving situation we will be trying to stay ahead of. The South African strain is also more contagious than the Kent one so could easily take hold.

OP posts:
Ninbus · 04/01/2021 07:41

I am not trying to suggest it is fact. I said it “may” not be effective

OP posts:
iVampire · 04/01/2021 07:43

It’s worth reading the tweets from Anthony Costello (I-SAGE) yesterday about single dose administration programme and the emergence or vaccine resistant strains,

Ninbus · 04/01/2021 07:50

Thank you ivampire interesting tweets will read through properly later

OP posts:
MarinPrime · 04/01/2021 08:03

And another completely different virus might emerge in a few years that will kill us all.
It's pointless and scaremongering to speculate on what "may" happen.
