Hospitalisation Rates in Children

ClimbDad · 01/01/2021 22:01

Mumsnet removed a thread discussing hospitalisation and risks to children following the LBC interview with the hospital matron.

The Department of Health publishes hospitalisation figures by age. Daily hospitalisation of children is currently averaging 40 to 50 admissions.

coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/healthcare?areaType=nation&areaName=England

The admissions criteria is designed to exclude children who are in hospital for other reasons and catch Covid-19.

I don’t know what we consider an acceptable level of risk. We haven’t had that conversation as a country, but I feel sorry for the hundreds of families living through this horrific experience every week.

Yes probably purple. I think she's made off the cuff remark and maybe it's true or half true... But it's been picked up because of the school storm.

PurpleDaisies · 02/01/2021 00:00

So that’s OK then?

Of course not.

It’s a totally different situation to children with no underlying health conditions suddenly being admitted to hospital at an increased rate (more than would be explained by an increase in the infection rate generally).

Em777 · 02/01/2021 00:01

@CabinClose

I think she’s probably telling the truth because saying it giving her real name and location is absolutely inviting a professional misconduct charge if she lied.
Yes, and she’s probably silent now because she’s under siege from her employer/gov officials for breaching the suppression order.
Panickingpavlova · 02/01/2021 00:02

On underlying conditions one would then have to qualify the degree of the problem... I don't see how one would quantify my dd issue...

Fortherosesjoni70 · 02/01/2021 00:02

But it could be asthma or something like being diabetic. Not everything is life threatning.

Elephant4 · 02/01/2021 00:02

As far as I can see, other health professionals aren’t rushing to confirm what she’s said.

There is a word for it - but in the previous wave health professionals were sworn to silence. I expect they'll lost their jobs if they speak out and let the truth be known.

PurpleDaisies · 02/01/2021 00:03

I think I need to put my tin hat on and go to bed.

Yes. Teachers too.
ShouldIgonow · 02/01/2021 00:03

Well this is scary. I’m really worried I hope we have some clarity over the weekend to get some context around her comments.

Panickingpavlova · 02/01/2021 00:03

If its true or becoming that way I'm sure some more will break ranks.

But I'm sure many wouldn't because they don't want to induce panic...

Personally I panic when I feel things are being hidden from me.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 02/01/2021 00:04

Not quite sworn to silence but not advised to make a fuss.

lucieloos · 02/01/2021 00:04

.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 02/01/2021 00:05

and the aren't interested in reporting schools that had covid just media silence for months.

Noellodee · 02/01/2021 00:05

There's an article about staff being strong armed into keeping quiet here, sorry if it's already been posted:

Em777 · 02/01/2021 00:06

I’m a foreigner, can somebody please explain to me why it’s acceptable in this country for the government to suppress freedom of speech in the medical community? I understand they’re not allowed to speak to the press without permission etc. This sounds horribly Orwellian to me. But then I’ve come to view England very differently over the past year. Government info is often misinformation.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 02/01/2021 00:06

How awful!

Had a quick google and there's a petition to stop medical staff being silenced by gagging orders where it relates to COVID. petition.parliament.uk/petitions/550598. I know as a teacher we're not supposed to discuss what it's like in school
Fortherosesjoni70 · 02/01/2021 00:07

Makes you really wonder about what is being supressed.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 02/01/2021 00:07

Exactly @hedgehogger1

CarolEffingBaskin · 02/01/2021 00:12

NHS staff have always been banned from talking to the media unless specifically asked to do so.
That is in no way new, or related to coronavirus.

Every staff member at the trust I worked at - where family members still work - agree to this in their contracts.

It’s not ‘gagging,’ it’s confidentiality related.

AlwaysLatte · 02/01/2021 00:13

I didn't realise that the numbers of children being hospitalised with this was so high. If my two were not already told to stay home till the 18th there's absolutely no way I'd be sending them in.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 02/01/2021 00:14

There was a doctor on indie sage saying they are not coping.

JeffreyJefferson · 02/01/2021 00:14

strange

FingersXssd83 · 02/01/2021 00:14

There's been an ongoing media blackout. Nobody working in the NHS can speak out. Northern hospitals have been crippled since Oct. Only when things get bad in the south do we have stringent measures. The truth should be out in the open, which would help with compliance. Really wouldn't be surprised if the government are trying to cover up child infection stories. It's so depressing.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 02/01/2021 00:15

In hospitals. She was quite frank about it. All the sage members were asking her things. It really was very alarming. So many staff off with covid too.
