No online learning for secondaries?

Agoodbriskwalk · 30/12/2020 18:00

So as I understood it, secondaries were doing online learning from Monday 4th, back in on 11th.

Now they’re saying vulnerable and key worker kids in from 4th, exam years in remotely from 11th and everyone else back on 18th (subject to reviews). Have I got that right? So most secondary kids have 2 extra weeks holiday?!

Why no online learning for all years from 11th?

And what’s safer about 18th?

Realistically though, that isn't going to happen unfortunately; the requirement for week 2 (11th-15th) is for online learning for all, and face to face for exam years as much as possible. So teachers will be needing to run their normal timetable for all years that week. There isn't scope in these guidelines to have exam years in but no online learning for anyone else.

Orangeblossom77777 · 30/12/2020 21:33

I'm hoping there is not extra work for exam years as they have enough with revision for mocks and also things like the project for DT to complete. Guess different for those who have done mocks already I suppose.

@ineedaholidaynow

Ooh they updated it at last! Thanks

Drivingho · 30/12/2020 21:49

So are they bringing them all back on the 18th regardless of he many have been tested?

StealthPolarBear · 30/12/2020 21:56

No he was very clear the 18h might be pushed back

Thank you!

They have changed the part about remote learning now though on their DFE page so what they asked MNHQ to post last night isn’t wholly accurate. They changed their mind again it seems.

SophieB100 · 31/12/2020 10:15

This quote is from the BBC website:

The education secretary told BBC Breakfast that remote learning would be "mandatory" from the week commencing 11 January for all secondary students, other than years 11 and 13 who would physically return to school on that date.

Rollergirl11 · 31/12/2020 10:37

Is the mass testing just for the return to school after the Christmas holidays or are they also planning to replace the current self isolating from a close contact with the close contacts remaining in school and being tested instead?

starrynight19 · 31/12/2020 10:49

Yes the plan is to stop isolating in schools and use these tests that aren’t very accurate , even when done by professionals.

TheFallenMadonna · 31/12/2020 11:09

This is the bit that makes me nervous. Goes against the guidance everywhere else.

starrynight19 · 31/12/2020 11:13

Yes , but then they seem to do that with schools all the time. They have their own rules for them.

BringPizza · 31/12/2020 11:36

My DC's secondary school is online learning from the 5th.

noblegiraffe · 31/12/2020 11:38

Pick your favourite graphic, both from the DfE since yesterday.

No one knows what's going on, especially not Gav or the DfE.

I would love school to set something / anything for my son's non exam year for the week commencing 4/1.

I appreciate teacher time will be short but a request to read a book, check out a BBC bite size link or similar while being great. I can do this myself but it's so much more effective of it comes via school. I'll be working full time that week and a bit of directed learning from school would be so helpful.

Lemons1571 · 31/12/2020 15:29

@chantico

Aside from key worker families and socially vulnerable DC:

It's at least until 18th for going on-site - exception, those in exam years who go in from 11th.

I wouldn't be holding my breath for an actual return on 18th in those areas where primaries are closing

Tweet from DfE confirms that not all secondaries will return on 18th
Getmoveon14 · 31/12/2020 16:38

Considering that last term the government told secondaries to teach online (except years 11 and 13) for the first week of term there shouldn't be a problem getting lessons ready. But maybe that would be a waste of another opportunity for a U-turn!

Atrixie · 31/12/2020 16:42

Online learning for all years starts 9am on Tuesday 5th jan for all years at our school according to timetable for everything apart from PSHE and PE. All children to have cameras on, in a room suitable to work from and dressed properly with no nightwear. Can’t complain

Frlrlrubert · 31/12/2020 16:51

Letter to parents - Our head is buying an extra day by having Tuesday as a 'Teams introduction assembly' for all pupils instead of lessons, then online timetable from the 6th.

So I can't plan anything until I have the timetable (some lesson will be live and some will be independent remote learning - so I need to know which is which so I can plan).

Bet I don't get that timetable before Monday afternoon.

Thefeep · 31/12/2020 21:37

My kids start online learning from 6th, years 9 and 10.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 31/12/2020 21:46

I think online learning should start on 11th Jan for year 7 to 10 but dds school is starting on the 5th for all years. But this is just setting work not live lessons.

Our kids schools are online learning for all classes from 4th.

DC year 8 online live lessons start on the 5th of Jan , hoping to be back in school from the 18th ,though subject to change . We are in Essex tier4

LadyCatStark · 31/12/2020 23:57

DS’s school is doing online learning from Tuesday (Monday was always an inset day) for all years. It’s a Grammar school though so they have very high expectations which I’m grateful for.
