No online learning for secondaries?

Agoodbriskwalk · 30/12/2020 18:00

So as I understood it, secondaries were doing online learning from Monday 4th, back in on 11th.

Now they’re saying vulnerable and key worker kids in from 4th, exam years in remotely from 11th and everyone else back on 18th (subject to reviews). Have I got that right? So most secondary kids have 2 extra weeks holiday?!

Why no online learning for all years from 11th?

And what’s safer about 18th?

People say ing schools have said remote learning from the 4th, was that based on the guidance before Christmas or from today?

StealthPolarBear · 30/12/2020 18:56

Yes I'm confused too.

TheFallenMadonna · 30/12/2020 18:56

They may be changing their plans in mine with the guidance today, bearing in mind they need to set up a pretty significant testing programme next week, in addition to key worker and vulnerable children being in school, and exam years having remote learning. As an AP school, we will be fully open next week, and how we will manage the testing is at the moment anyone's guess.

My dc1's secondary announced the first week back would be online learning apart form Y11 and Y13 before the end of term!
ineedaholidaynow · 30/12/2020 18:58

When did you break up @Meredusoleil?

TheFallenMadonna · 30/12/2020 18:59

The guidance changed today.

Porcupineintherough · 30/12/2020 19:00

At our secondary vulnerable and key workers children dont get taught as such. The go to the resource centre and are supervised as they work through the online work set for their year group. I guess it may be the case that those with 1:1 support still receive it but would anyone really begrudge them that?

MegBusset · 30/12/2020 19:02

Our high school's provision for key workers / vulnerable children consists of exactly the same work everyone else gets set to work on at home, they just do it in a classroom. There's no teaching as such.

julesover40 · 30/12/2020 19:03

My dd high school has already emailed to say they are looking into the new guidelines and will fully inform parents and students of the plan going forward tomorrow.
They had already been set up for online learning from 4th, so hopefully will still be the plan.

HipTightOnions · 30/12/2020 19:05

@AldiAisleofCrap

The testing misses 51% of positive cases am unsure why the government think it’s helpful.
Or even 97%...

Bitbusyattheminute · 30/12/2020 19:07

Even before the announcement, we assumed it'd be online learning for some. As it has been SINCE MARCH. We double planned- for in and out of school. It's not ideal though.

Next week, it looks like going back to teaching from my kitchen table, while my primary aged kids share the laptop. Unless of course, I'm on rota to be in for kw kids. In which case, I hope my kids can go to our local kw hub.

toocold54 · 30/12/2020 19:08

There is online learning for all years who aren’t back in school from the 4th.

The government said that schools being open is the most important thing but now they have said that education is the most important thing which can be done remotely from home.

I am a teacher but we have not been given the finer details yet.

toocold54 · 30/12/2020 19:11

At our secondary vulnerable and key workers children dont get taught as such. The go to the resource centre and are supervised as they work through the online work set for their year group.

This is the same for mine and my DCs schools.
Those children going into school due to being vulnerable/kw are not getting any different education to those at home as the staff are there to just supervise and not teach to make it fair.

Monstermissy36 · 30/12/2020 19:13

I thought it sounded like the first week was for staff to arrange and sort how they would deliver testing so extended holiday?? I listened to GW speech in the commons...

Who knows I'm still waiting to hear from my work what their plans are as I'm not sure what I'm doing on Monday.., are staff expected in or are we all remote etc etc I haven't a clue yet.

Chosennonesneakymincepie · 30/12/2020 19:13

Hopefully the DFE will issue clear guidance pretty soon so schools can actually see what they're meant to be providing!

Usually its published around midnight the day before it's meant to take effect Confused

ineedaholidaynow · 30/12/2020 19:14

@Monstermissy36 that is how I interpreted it, as he was talking about how important it was to get the testing done.

Meredusoleil · 30/12/2020 19:16

@ineedaholidaynow

When did you break up *@Meredusoleil*?
Official end of term was 18th. Then it became an INSET day. So 17th was the last official day. But her year group were told to stay home from the week before, so Wednesday 9th was her last day physically in school. The school emailed us during that final week I think it was.
Chaotic45 · 30/12/2020 19:17

It's chaotic and confusing. Definitely no mention in today's announcements of online learning for non exam years, and certainly an implication that there will be no learning at all for them.

Latest info on gov.uk was updated on 17th, so is out of date and says online learning from 11th.

Did they forget about other secondary kids needing to learn? Is another two weeks of holiday with most parents at work and no direction a good plan?

What a waste of time!

ineedaholidaynow · 30/12/2020 19:18

The guidance came out on the 17th, so the school email was probably based on that. Guidance has now changed

PatriciaHolm · 30/12/2020 19:21

The Govt daily email to secondaries has landed, and says -

"during the first week of term, beginning on or just after 4 January, secondary schools and colleges will focus on the rollout of testing to help find asymptomatic cases. They will provide face-to-face education for vulnerable children and the children of critical workers, and prioritise resources for remote education for exam year groups in line with what they would receive in class and to all other years as resources permit

during the second week of term, beginning on 11 January, secondary schools and colleges will start their programme of testing, prioritising staff, those students in schools and colleges and the exam cohorts. Schools and colleges will be able to bring students back to face-to-face tuition as testing is rolled out. Remote education will be provided to all pupils this week prior to return to school or college

all students will return to secondary schools and colleges for face-to-face education by 18 January

vocational exams scheduled for the first week of January will go ahead as planned"

So remote education for the week of 4-11 is up to the school, other than for exam years.

Tarararara · 30/12/2020 19:24

Thank you PatriciaHolm

Good to finally get clarity!

StealthPolarBear · 30/12/2020 19:26

Thank you. Worth mentioning that even Johnson mentioned tbe 18th might be put back, depending on numbers

Whyarewehardofthinking · 30/12/2020 19:37

We've just finished a quick chat over Teams; we have had nothing as a school officially and what was said in Parliament was about as clear as mud. We will be providing online learning for all from Monday 4th and will have Years 11, 12 and 13 back in on 11th but we have a few things to work out as we have BTEC exams from the 6th that are currently the bigger issue.

AldiAisleofCrap · 30/12/2020 20:00

@HipTightOnions 97% what’s the point , I am so angry they are wasting time and money on these tests.

Andorra155 · 30/12/2020 20:06

Based on what was said today... I understood it as start of term delayed for secondary non exam years for 2 weeks, no online learning.
