No announcement on the Queen getting vaccinated yet

So before the Pfizer jab got approved, there was a lot of talk in the media how the Queen and Prince Philip will get vaccinated to encourage the public. Not getting it done in public, but an announcement was to be expected, and both are of advanced age so eligible for the Pfizer vaccine. However, we heard nary a peep. Just Prince Charles saying he would wait his turn. The cynic in me thinks to make things patriotic and jingoistic, the Queen was asked to wait for the Oxford vaccine to be approved and will get this one. Your thoughts on the delay?

The Queen's health is not spoken about. I don't think we would know if she has been/will be vaccinated. In line with the Royal Family being impartial.

notevenat20 · 18/12/2020 20:20

I think they are very worried she isn't seen to be getting special treatment. Unlike in the US you will notice where 60 year old members of the Whitehouse are getting vaccinated.

CrunchyCarrot · 18/12/2020 20:23

The silence is deafening, isn't it! I would have thought that we'd have heard that she and Philip have had it, but perhaps not.

SantasBritchesSpelleas · 18/12/2020 20:26

The Queen isn't known for sharing details of her private life. I doubt anything will be said.

bornatXmastobequiet · 18/12/2020 20:29

The Royals are very big on homeopathic medicine, aren’t they? Maybe they don’t do vaccines.
It’s interesting to remember that their generation grew up before the antibiotic era, when you could literally die from a scratch if it got infected. Not that that stopped my parents from making the most of modern medicine, including vaccines (my Mum was a huge fan of the ‘flu jab). But it gives you a different perspective, maybe.

HappyHomeWorker · 18/12/2020 20:31

What if they got it and something happened to them ... they’re hardly going to make a big thing of it.

SantasBritchesSpelleas · 18/12/2020 20:34

Charles is, but I'm not sure about his mother.

Theotherrudolph · 18/12/2020 20:39

They have the same right to medical privacy as anyone else. The other difficulty with using people in their mid-late 90s as an example in this way is if they then get ill or die, which is hardly unlikely at that age, even if it has nothing to do with the vaccine, the conspiracy theory nutters would have some pretty golden ammunition.

ShreksAuntie · 18/12/2020 20:49

Leave the poor woman alone. She’s entitled to a private life.

If people are stupid enough to decline a vaccine because HRH hasn’t had it and shown the world on TV then more fool them.

movingonup20 · 18/12/2020 20:52

At the moment most the people vaccinated were nhs staff or those already in hospital/scheduled outpatient plus certain large gp practices. No home visits yet so they are not going to have been offered it, plus they said all along they aren't being treated differently.

MoirasRoses · 18/12/2020 21:34

What a peculiar thing to even think about.. who cares? Will you choose to not get it cos Queenie hasn’t publicly announced she’s had it? I imagine she has to wait her turn like everyone else!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 18/12/2020 21:39

With Prince Philip being nearly 100 and not in the best of health they might be holding out for a home visit which is unlikely to happen till the Oxford vaccine is rolled out next year.

Flowersmakemyday · 18/12/2020 21:43

I don't think it is any of our business as to whether or not they get the vaccine.

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 18/12/2020 21:43

They did announce that they will be vaccinated and would “make it known”. I’m betting they’ve had the first dose already and we will be told when they’ve had both- sometime in the NY, depending on an appropriate moment in the news cycle.

DickAndSizzy · 18/12/2020 21:46

This really is a case of damned if you do (special treatment) and damned if you don't (not doing your bit).

Hi there. Too many theys for my little brain. Who said what now?
SantasBritchesSpelleas · 18/12/2020 21:51

But given the ages of the Queen and DofE, it wouldn't be special treatment to vaccinate them now - they qualify anyway.

I'm an ardent republican who would like to see the Royals deposed, however:

  1. The Royals are entitled to be vaccinated on the same terms as everyone else.
  2. They're entitled to privacy about their vaccinations.
EdithWeston · 18/12/2020 21:52

I think she'll say in her Christmas speech that she and DofEd were both done earlier in December.

They usually keep health private, but there is precedent on vaccinations, as she announced that Prince Charles and aPrincess Anne had birth received the (then brand new) polio vaccine in 1957, something that was considered an important bit of public health messaging

Lizzie523 · 18/12/2020 22:04

I'm sure she has had it.

cyclingmad · 18/12/2020 22:24

The Royal family are supposed to offer stability and continuity, they have been awfully silent. I would of least expected in these times for the Queen to have done a recorded message at second lockdown.

I understand Prince William and Kate have been out n about but in all seriousness it doesn't cover many areas.

I think in these exceptional times of that one of your roles to unite the country etc. Then its not a bad idea to say they have had the vaccine or be a bit more present through TV messages at the right points throughout the year

Elephant4 · 18/12/2020 22:27

I've heard from various people/sources that the Royal Family are never vaccinated for anything at all.

LemonTT · 18/12/2020 22:29

Well unless she is in Scotland she can’t get it at home yet. Because approval has not yet been given to split the pack in England. Even the royal household doesn’t have 975 over 80’s living there

She’s not going to go to an NHS site because they are run to tight deadlines to avoid waste. Specifically they get given a batch that must be used with 3.5 days at best. Her visit would be mega disruptive to the flow of patients and numbers being vaccinated.

She has previously announced that her family has been vaccinated. She has indicated she wants to do it again.

It will be done soon in a seemly way. With no obvious special treatment because the eternally offended and fuming masses will moan.

DumplingsAndStew · 18/12/2020 22:39

Isn't it still just HCP and care homes being vaccinated?

forwardsbackwardsrebound · 18/12/2020 22:51

The old boot has been silent through this whole pandemic!

forwardsbackwardsrebound · 18/12/2020 22:54

@Lizzie523

I'm sure she has had it.
