If you tested positive and had a loss of smell/ taste....

If you tested positive and had a loss of smell/ taste did your smell and taste go completely or were they just significantly dampened?

My taste and smell seem to be damper this evening but I can still smell and taste some stuff. I’ve usually got a very sensitive sense of smell and taste and our dinner was spicy (I kept adding chilli because it tasted bland) but I couldn’t taste it particularly and only knew how spicy it was because my nose started running. My husband usually adds extra chilli but didn’t need to.

I’m not sure if I need full smell/ taste loss for it to be a symptom though?

For the first few days my smell/taste was reduced, then for a solid week couldn’t smell/taste a thing. Tested positive on day 4. Returned just as suddenly as it disappeared though!

AgentCooper · 16/12/2020 20:11

My sense of smell and taste disappeared and I had a positive test the next day. On day 3 and I’m hoping they come back soon, I hate this. Couldn’t smell that my wee one had a poo in his nappy earlier and felt awful Sad

ShivD · 16/12/2020 20:20

Thanks both for sharing your experiences. I’ll wait to see what happens but thinking a test is probably a good idea.

totally gone

FiggyPuddingFiend · 16/12/2020 20:21

I tested positive (due to cough) and then lost my sense of smell over a couple of days, started off feeling damped as if smells were in the distance and then completely went. It affected my taste, I can still taste but only sweet/salty/etc not a full flavour and some things don't really taste at all - like garlic and cheese. I looked up why and apparently flavour is given by both receptors in nose and taste buds, I think just my nose was affected.

ShivD · 16/12/2020 20:21

@AgentCooper I have a little one too so this will be a real problem for me too.

for me things started to taste weird on the morning of day 4 (lemon in hot water tasted really bitter) then my taste & smell both pretty much disappeared soon after. the test i booked that day came back positive the following evening but i had minimal other symptoms, only headache / sinus pain to begin with. hope you test negative or have a mild case and not too much disruption!

HarrietOh · 16/12/2020 20:24

My smell disappeared almost instantly. I had a weird headache for 24 hours though so was slightly worried and kept sniffing things. I had a nice lunch then a couple of hours later noticed couldn’t smell a thing, literally inhaling jars of lazy garlic and not even the faintest of smells from it!
Lasted about 6-7 days and then it seemed to come back slowly over a day or two.

ShivD · 16/12/2020 21:03

Thanks, seems like it completely disappeared for most people.

I’ve booked a test for tomorrow morning so we’ll see.

My only other symptom is a mildly sore throat and I’m knackered but I have a sleep regressing baby so that’s not too odd.

Following with interest. I sound just like you OP - I can still taste/smell some things but savoury things have been tasting really bland. Other than that just fatigue, headache and some sinus pain. Currently waiting for a test result.

ShivD · 17/12/2020 09:38

@fitbciz1 I woke in the night with a sinus headache and felt crap when I woke up this morning.

Hope you’re not waiting too much longer and hopefully negative!

I lost both taste and smell. Four weeks later, they are only just starting to come back.

I made, what I thought was going to be a tasty beef goulash the other night. It took me hours and was completely tasteless. After being so disappointed, I decided to spice things up. I poured half a jar of crushed chillies in. Holy shit! it was then that I realised my taste was on its way back. 😆

Negative for me - result took about 40 hours. Maybe DH is just losing his touch in the kitchen! Still have rubbish headache and sinus pain. Hope you also get a negative OP.

HikeForward · 17/12/2020 15:04

I’m on Day 4 and cannot smell much apart from odd smells that don’t exist. I can taste some things. I can’t remember if that was the case from Day 1 or not I think it came on gradually.

HikeForward · 17/12/2020 15:05

Just to add I’ve had a positive test as has DH and 6 year old DD. The only symptom in DD is she doesn’t want chocolate! DH has lost all sense of smell and taste.

ForestNymph · 17/12/2020 15:07

Nothing. Felt like I was eating cardboard

MrsMiaWallis · 17/12/2020 15:23

I couldn't smell vicks vaporub or burning food. I mean literally nothing. Took a good few weeks to return and isn't as good as it was months later.

Covidwoes · 17/12/2020 17:22

I tested positive four and a half weeks ago. Sense of smell is barely there. Taste has come back a little, but not much, and I find that on certain days I can taste more than others. Today I can barely taste a thing. I'm finding the taste thing really annoying.

myhobbyisouting · 17/12/2020 17:36

Anyone lost taste without losing smell? And was it very sudden that it came on. As in, could taste for the first part of the meal but not for the second?

myhobbyisouting · 18/12/2020 00:43

@ShivD what was the outcome?

ShivD · 18/12/2020 09:28

Still no results for me, was Hoping for quick ones but I reckon loads of people are getting a test before seeing loved ones next week, the testing site was rammed!

I can still taste a bit but everything tastes strange.

AgentCooper · 19/12/2020 11:54

My taste and smell are definitely, hopefully returning gradually after disappearing on Monday.

HikeForward · 19/12/2020 16:02

Day 6 and I have no sense of taste or smell at all. I can’t even smell bleach!

Doesn’t bother me as I’m usually hypersensitive to both and it’s a relief not to smell or taste anything.

emptydreamer · 19/12/2020 16:34

I actually could taste chili, despite losing taste almost completely re sweet / salty / sour etc. I think it is because "chili" taste is to a significant extent mild pain (very mild chemical burn by capsaicin), rather than processing of flavour by taste buds.

Marmozet · 19/12/2020 16:36

Any result now?
