Refusnik West Yorkshire Hairdresser : Fine Now 27K

Flaxmeadow · 25/11/2020 00:55

Has anyone else been following this story?

A hairdressers in Kirklees/Bradford (border area) is refusing to shut and Kirkless council keep issuing fines. The latest fine is £10,000, which takes the total fines to 27k

These two council areas in West Yorkshire have consistently had some of the highest rates of infection in the UK.

The council are saying they will force the shop to shut today, Wednesday. What should be done?

Her views and rights as an individual don't come before community safety when lives are at stake. She is a hairdresser not an epidemiologist and must accept what the experts say.

Almost every other business has complied, and infection rates are dropping.

She needs to close until told otherwise.

SheepandCow · 25/11/2020 01:22

^^this.

But no doubt this thread will fill up with people shouting about Freeedooom and demanding that they do whatever they like - consequences to other people and society be damned! Oh - and that we're being controlled by a sinister Big Bird robot who wants to put microchips in us to make us grow wings, red bull style. 🐦

Seriously, don't they look at other countries who got it right and realise it's refusing to follow guidelines that prolongs this all?

Flaxmeadow · 25/11/2020 01:22

I agree Mintjulia.

She doesn't seem to understand that the council have no choice in the matter. If they let her stay open, then they would have to ignore other businesses in the area who might try the same tactics

Ideologies that involve denial of reality are scary AF.

OzziePopPop · 25/11/2020 01:35

She’s literally going to put herself out of business, dim woman!

MoirasRoses · 25/11/2020 07:24

She’s an idiot. I live in Kirklees, this kinda behaviour doesn’t surprise me 🙄 I bet her clients are ‘right behind you hun, thanks babe’ .. Honestly, it’s one month. I get it’s been a very hard for hairdressers, particularly small ones but she’ll be snowed under at Christmas catching up. She’s surely just putting herself out of business & at the end of the day, being really irresponsible to her clients.

Lemonylemony · 25/11/2020 07:35

She citing an obscure defunct clause of the Magna Carta and saying she “doesn’t consent” to the fines..... she’s clearly bonkers. She’s bankrupting herself surely.

midgebabe · 25/11/2020 07:40

It's just a small example of what is probably happening across areas with stubbornly high rates. People pushing rules, putting their short term interest first and not accepting that harsher restrictions will last longest in areas with poor virus control.

I do appreciate it's hard when your job is on the line, it's just I don't see how ignoring the spirit and letter of the rules actually helps protect your job or anyone else's , but just pushes your region further into poverty

Oh that Magna Carta thing is beloved of the conspiracy theorists. What a foolish woman.
EasterIssland · 25/11/2020 07:44

In Bristol we’ve a tatooist behaving similarly
Refused to isolate when flew back from Greece
Refused to isolate when tested positive
Refused to close. Police had to go a few times asking him to close. Demos outside his door supporting him. They closed it and got some of his tools. He needs to pay 1k if he wants to recover them.

If I was the press I would stop talking about him as he just wants attention

Rudolphian · 25/11/2020 07:45

She might already be on the verge of bankruptcy. So it doesnt matter how much they fine her.

meditrina · 25/11/2020 07:46

Freemen on the Land are utterly barking. Sorry to put it quite like that, but it is staggering. The t's far from a new phenomenon.

See also this thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/4084375-why-are-people-saying-that-businesses-can-use-the-magna-carta-to-remain-open

and this older thread is all about their parallel universe:

Lemonylemony · 25/11/2020 07:52

It’s reminiscent of those freeman-of-the-land loons who believe you can get out of any legal jam by not consenting to the law applying to you, or claiming you are not the person named, who is a legal fiction and your birth certificate is state coercion or other such guff.

Idiot.

Grin

I think it's way beyond the ordinary level of conspiracy theory!

sleepwouldbenice · 25/11/2020 08:49

I have major sympathy for all businesses impacted by all this. I run one myself
But honestly? She can rot in jail for all I care. She is not special

Oh, she's one of those. A Magna Carta free man/woman. Says it all.
Sparklingbrook · 25/11/2020 11:46

Here's the one in my county. Essential cake icing or something.

CoffeeandCroissant · 25/11/2020 11:51

A bit like those people who refuse to pay their council tax, because "Magna Carta something something" and "I never signed a contract with the council so I don't have to pay" and "...but the Magna Carta something something". Real life consequences of believing some shite you read on Facebook....

Bubblemonkey · 25/11/2020 11:54

She wanted to remain open for income didn’t she? Worked out well for her with 27k worth of fines Hmm

dudsville · 25/11/2020 11:54

I imagine she's a bit like Trump. She's made up her own mind, fair enough, but her interpretation of the situation isn't based on the most widely shared facts and laws. Sheer will isn't enough to change things round to her viewpoint.

Sparklingbrook · 25/11/2020 11:56

My cake icing shop people have had a £1000 fine so far. It's predominantly a greetings cards/helium balloon shop.

Sunbird24 · 25/11/2020 11:59

It wouldn’t matter if she’d stayed open if people weren’t stupid enough to make appointments and turn up to them! They should all get fined too.

I agree with that.
