Why are people saying that businesses can use the Magna Carta to remain open?

And avoid fines? People are suggesting this can happen and so far I've seen people following this advice and getting fines. Why they can't just do the right thing is beyond me.

Because they're idiots who don't have two brain cells to rub together...

ChaBishkoot · 19/11/2020 22:22

Because their lack of historical knowledge is piss poor. As a historian/academic who was trained in the U.K. although I now live in the US, I despair sometimes. A lot of the time. (I was unbearable to live with during Brexit according to my Midwesterner DH...)

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 19/11/2020 22:22

Are they also Freemen Of The Land?

Bvop · 19/11/2020 22:23

Because they read it on the internet. I think it’s the same bunch who do the “freeman of the land” thing where they claim the laws don’t apply because Magna Carta and because they don’t have a name.

The state of education that grown adults can be taken in by this sort of tosh Shock

amicissimma · 19/11/2020 22:24

They may be thinking of “No free man shall be seized, imprisoned, dispossessed, outlawed, exiled or ruined in any way,"

Claiming that by preventing 'him' from working, 'he' is being ruined. (I think 'he/him' has been expanded now.)

Because no matter how often the same bloke on YouTube tells them lies they never learn.

They want to believe the bullshit I guess

unmarkedbythat · 19/11/2020 22:26

Because they are idiots.

SomethingWycked · 19/11/2020 22:28

Theres plenty of 'resources' on the Internet telling you that the Magna Carta defence can be used to avoid paying Council Tax. It can't.

This is my favourite 'description' of it:

This is me your honour, but I'm not me. I don't exist. The me you are looking for is the other me. He exists, but he's not here. I am representing me. I am here, but I'm not here. You can talk to me and and I will pass the information on to me. You can fine me, but that doesn't count, because it's the other me you want, and he's invisible. So there!"

Joiningthegossip · 19/11/2020 22:36

It makes my blood boil when I watch these videos online of business people speaking to the police as if they are above them. Splurging out about the common law and Magna Carter the are total idiots!
The police need to knuckle down on them & make sure they are fined!
I bet they were first in the queue for the £10k grant!

I've had to close my business for 5 months this year, but I will not break rules and I would not be insured to work, it's simply not worth the risk.

PaperTowels · 19/11/2020 22:38

Because they're fuckwits.

TheGreatWave · 19/11/2020 22:42

Because they think they are really clever.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/11/2020 22:45

Sheer ignorance....

Does Magna Carta mean nothing to you? Did she die in vain? Brave Hungarian peasant girl who forced King John to sign the pledge at Runnymede and close the boozers at half past ten! Is all this to be forgotten?

Yes I completely agree. It makes my blood boil too. I think they'd change their tune if any relative of theirs became very ill with Covid!

Succinct, and to the point. Smile
unoeufisunoeuf1 · 20/11/2020 13:21

There was a brilliant thread on this a couple of years ago, where some legal experts analysed the bonkers claims and surprisingly found them to be total bs. I think one or two "Freemen of the Land" actually joined in at one point. Kept me entertained for days!

NeverTwerkNaked · 20/11/2020 14:08

Because they are fucking idiots.or "freemen of the land" as they prefer to call themselves
We have quite a few who refuse to pay council tax or parking fines. Most end up in prison for something eventually.

laudemio · 20/11/2020 14:08

Fgs this is the new 'freeman on the land' rubbish.

meditrina · 20/11/2020 14:13

Freemen on the Land

Utterly barking, the lot of them

wheresmymojo · 20/11/2020 14:14

Because they don't understand how law works.

And because Dunning-Kruger effect.

meditrina · 20/11/2020 14:15

Good thread about FOTL if you really want to slip into a parallel universe for a while

WellThisIsShit · 20/11/2020 14:24

Oh I spent many a happy hour reading the ‘Freeman on the land’ threads on here a few years ago. Fascinating read, if you like delving into that sort of brainless hysteria...

Bellal · 20/11/2020 14:39

Because some people are spectacularly, unremittingly, thick.

I don't mean uninformed. It's fine not to know whether Magna Carta means you can keep your shop open. But a non-thick person actually checks whether it's true before opening their gob.

Ah, that was the one! Thank you, that's my weekend sorted :)

HesterShaw1 · 20/11/2020 14:45

"Because they are idiots" isn't an answer.

I expect the OP is after some more information about the Magna Carta, and where all this stuff has come from. I'd be interested to know, as well.
