Reopening on 2nd December: remember this.

That is what our glorious leader said, that we waited three hours to hear, and we must hold him to account on it. Tier 4 restrictions will end on 2nd Dec, and will return to 3 or below on 2nd December. That is what he stated CATEGORICALLY, and yes, we did hear him right; he did not say that it would merely be "reviewed" on 2nd December, he said tier 4 restrictions would be REMOVED.

It's nice to have an end date to this new misery in sight, but unfortunately the oath came from a face with a nose longer than Pinocchio's. The single way in which our glorious leader is most likely to fuck up everybody this time round is by NOT keeping his word on this. After all, this is the man who promised "we can turn this virus around in twelve weeks" and "normalish by Christmas". Little was said about what they might achieve in this latest missile attack on people's livelihoods, but we could easily hear "we didn't achieve what we hoped, we never told you about it anyway, it's your fault anyway, so it's lasting longer" on 1st December.

Businesses need to plan for reopening on 2nd December, and be very public about it, so that if the government reneges on this promise, the damage done will be very clear indeed. The government is likely to spin their way out of allowing things back to how they are now on 2nd December: we must not be brainwashed into letting this happen.

If the government does actually keep their word on this, and it's business as usual (at least, as it is now) on 2nd December, they might actually do something to restore some public trust.

Remember also that if this lockdown is having the effect that it is supposed to have, many regions should be returning to LOWER tiers than they are in now. We do not expect areas which are in tier 2 or below now to find themselves in 3 on 2nd December.

Remember this. Watch the government, not your neighbours.

Young mum's harrowing cancer death as Covid forces thousands to die alone and in agony
Alarming data from the Office for National Statistics shows 27,000 more people died in private homes than normal so far this year - and the government faces calls to properly resource the NHS

I'll call off my chair in amazement if the restrictions are removed on 2 December.

This is the same Boris Johnson who told us we could get on top of it in 12 weeks, and everything would be back to normal by November.

pontypridd · 01/11/2020 20:56

That’s really interesting @Quartz2208.

I’ve been wondering what might be voted on and whether it would go through. Thank you.

@Againstmachine

We waited 3 hrs for him because they were forced to announce it before they were ready because some twat leaked it.

You do realise it was leaked on purpose don't you.

It wasn’t leaked on purpose. Trust me.

@Wanderings
THEY DON'T KNOW".
Is that what Drakeford will say on 9th November, when he categorically stated those restrictions would end on 9th November?
"I was going to end the firebreak lockdown, but I don't know.... "

And once again, I am not saying it's likely we'll be totally out of lockdown on 2nd December; but I do expect many of latest round of restrictions to be gone, even if the whole country is in tier 3. If rolling lockdowns are necessary, fixed end dates would help Boris-destroyed businesses to plan. If we get to 2nd December and nothing changes, especially if the figures are going down, I expect there will be civil unrest, when people realise that Boris has lied yet again.

Funny how we believe things we want and like .
It's purely about getting numbers down you can't give gaunteed dates . You are looking for cast iron answers on a situation that changes daily it CAN'T happen .

@BlanchflowerTulip

Many MPs will not only want their Christmas. They will want their pre Christmas too. Like pre Christmas drinkies, informal get togethers etc. And they will want to be able to do this without being watched like a hawk by the press. Which is what will happen if MPs attempt to do these things during a lockdown. And i very much doubt they will want to sacrifice these.
I bet they are silently cursing Cummings, Ferguson , Farrier et al because they have made being watched by the press even more likely

Things normally are by this government, to be fair.

Quartz2208 · 02/11/2020 14:07

I think Michael Gove spoke out of turn based on his standpoint.

Its clear listening to Rishi Sunak that there will be another long fight/discussion as to what will happen on the 2nd December.

Reading it I suspect it will end on the 2nd December and other measures be put into place

1stV45 · 02/11/2020 19:23

I'm almost expecting even tighter restrictions after 2 Dec. I can't see how four weeks of this half hearted "common sense" lockdown can achieve as much/more than the original lockdown, that went on for months did and we're being told things are worse now than they were then Sad

wanderings · 03/11/2020 10:15

I'm standing by my view that if we gloomily parrot "nothing will change on 2nd December", it will be a self-fulfilling prophecy: I'm sure the government are looking out for people doing this, and that Gove's move was to sow the seed: if people "want" it, they will get it.

So I am going to keep saying "WHEN restrictions are eased on 2nd December", and I will encourage others to do the same: call me deluded if you will, but I think we need to stand up to the brainwashing, which appears to be the government's one and only tool, instead of talking to us like adults. It looks as if Boris's priorities are: his own glory first (in this instance, he doesn't want to be Christmas-cancelling Cromwell), public mood second, virus "facts" third, the greater good last of all.

Of course they are not going to end on 2nd Dec.
