Tobias Ellwood MP: Vaccine verification certificates will be given to allow international travel

Good. Not mandatory but you’ll need it if you want to jet off on your yearly holiday. Sad that this, and not any public health concerns, will be the motivating factor for many sceptics.

Racoonworld · 29/09/2020 06:13

They will have to get a move on with vaccinating the whole population then. Current plans are only for health workers and elderly to be vaccinated first, not even the vulnerable. It may take more than a year to vaccinate everyone!

Thanx4theMmories · 29/09/2020 08:03

Awful. This is about forced vaccinations, a gross abuse of civil rights. I think the vax requirement is likely to extend to any travel, amenities, education etc.

I hope enough of us kick back.

tootyfruitypickle · 29/09/2020 08:08

Isn’t this just his opinion?
I agree though. But there must be GP exemption letters allowed for people who can’t be vaccinated.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 29/09/2020 08:11

He’s not suggesting forced vaccination though, is he? Just if you leave the country and want to come back, you’ll need it. You can choose not to.
Better than banning international travel completely (which frankly we should have done in March!).

tootyfruitypickle · 29/09/2020 08:12

There will have to be some sort of stick to get enough people vaccinated, to protect the most vulnerable and allow the economy to get back up on its feet - pandemic needs to end before that can happen and enough people don’t get vaccinated it won’t. Can’t really understand why you wouldn’t - both fir yourself, those around you, and especially for society at large. We don’t exist in our own private bubbles. It’s essential we get high rates of vaccinations.

I don’t think it will take a year. It’ll be absolute priority.

Hmmph · 29/09/2020 08:14

I can’t see a problem with this if it is time limited. For example - travel between 2021 and 2024 and then you don’t need one.

The vulnerable are included in the priority list. I don't think it will take that long to get round to them. Health workers have a question mark whether they get priority - it all depends on the type of vaccine that they will be using.

Coerced maybe rather than forced but still wrong imo. I would be happy to isolate on return from overseas rather than have a vaccination.

I'm not anti vax at all but this one has been rushed through so there will be no knowledge of the long term side effects. For that reason, I am cautious.

AllWashedOut · 29/09/2020 09:53

Soon after, they will insist on vaccine status to accesses job sites, supermarkets etc. The government won't be legislating per se but the onus to enforce will be on private business and public shaming will do the rest. Everyone will have to have a super updated mobile phone to have all the relevant 'COVID SECURE' apps. The government will issue these to everyone to make sure everyone can comply in the name of 'ensuring economic equality'.

People will largely comply because they are #kind and want everything to return to normal. The government will say these steps will return things to normal. It will not. There'll be other diseases. Nothing will revert things to the old normal.

SerendipityJane · 29/09/2020 12:10

So where do I get the vaccine ?

Ah, it all falls over right there ....

Yes, he is just one backbench MP giving an opinion/ suggestion, he is not the Prime Minister or even a member of the cabinet.

The OP admitted attending the Trafalgar Square protest last weekend (main speaker: David Icke) so perhaps bear that in mind for context.

notimagain · 29/09/2020 12:34

Agreed....even pre-Covid there were still countries that required certain vaccinations/certificate for entry..(proof of vaccination yellow fever vaccination can still be a requirement - it's even been a temporary requirement to enter some Caribbean countries in that decade or so)

..I'm no fan of the Mr Ellwood but what he is describing hardly sounds like something new...

notimagain · 29/09/2020 12:35

the last decade or so..

StatisticalSense · 29/09/2020 12:37

Presumably they'll have to start with the young then for the vaccinations as it would cause literal rioting if the elderly who have been the least effected all along were allowed to go on holiday whilst the young who have made the biggest sacrifices are stuck following stricter rules.

frozendaisy · 29/09/2020 13:03

Sliver of hope a vaccine will come.

SerendipityJane · 29/09/2020 13:04

To be fair the wealthy retired are in a better position to kick start the travel industry hence return of jobs for many youngsters.

I would assume that you will be able to get one privately as part of your travel package, if this happens of course.

Thanx4theMmories · 29/09/2020 13:11

Is no one cautious because the vaccine is rushed with no evidence of long term safety? A vaccine takes years of testing before its licensed. Usually, to complete the clinical trials needed to apply for a licence for the new vaccine

whatswithtodaytoday · 29/09/2020 13:18

@Thanx4theMmories Not really, because the vaccines will have been through the same amount of testing as any other new vaccine. The time taken is usually due to delays in getting funding.

The vaccines currently at Stage 3 trial are all old types of vaccine which have already been widely used and are safe.

Thanx4theMmories · 29/09/2020 13:19

And dismissing anyone with concerns as a conspiracy theorist is lazy.

I don't have a tin foil hat and I didn't go to the protest but I am able to read around a topic and draw my own conclusions rather than thinking what the BBC wants me to think. There are many credible scientists who counter the narrative. It depends which science you choose to believe.

Stage 3 trials take years though, usually at least 6 years I read. Nothing can be done to replicate the effects of time. This is my concern.

Fyzz · 29/09/2020 13:22

I'm all for mandatory vaccines in schools and for travel.
However there is unlikely to be covid vaccine on demand for a long time. Even if they can start in early 2021 it will take a year to vaccinate the population.
If the vaccine is made available to purchase privately that creates a whole division on wealth grounds.

SerendipityJane · 29/09/2020 13:27

Surely the past 6 months have felt like 6 years ?

tobee · 29/09/2020 18:32

I'd love to have a £ for every time I've read "I'm not anti vax, but this vaccine has been rushed" on these boards.
