To ask for ideas to encourage people on buses to wear masks

Ok..every time I go on a bus there are people not wearing masks, and it is highly unlikely they all have a genuine reason not to wear a mask e.g. a group of 3 girls aged about 16-18, a youngish mid twenties couple. The bus drivers let them on, no question. Since 80% of people testing positive for coronovirus show no symptoms, it would seem a likely cause of spreading the virus. I don't want to say anything to the non mask wearers and I assume other mask wearing bus passengers feel the same. Like most people I don't want to cause embarrassment or confrontation. This is an issue on buses and apparently trains and underground and some shops. During a pandemic, aibu to think there must be a way to solve this.

Can we not have some daily limit on mask threads?

NoMoreReluctantCustodians · 08/08/2020 17:22

There is no way to police mask wearing so YABU.

FlySheMust · 08/08/2020 17:23

Selfish people will always be selfish, sadly.

barofsoap · 08/08/2020 17:25

best mind your own business - if masks worked we would have been wearing them in March

FlySheMust · 08/08/2020 17:26

The only reason we weren't wearing them in March was to save them for health workers. They would have helped but we didn't have enough.

Gancanny · 08/08/2020 17:27

Wear your own mask and leave other people to get on with wearing theirs, or not wearing them as the case may be. If you see someone not wearing one then you'll save yourself a boatload of stress by simply presuming they have good reason and then moving on with your life.

Moondust001 · 08/08/2020 17:28

How do you know that it's unlikely they have a genuine reason for not wearing masks? Are genuine reasons age related?

PurpleDaisies · 08/08/2020 17:28

You wear a mask.

roarfeckingroarr · 08/08/2020 17:29

Not another mask thread

PrincessHoneysuckle · 08/08/2020 17:29

Its mandatory on the buses in South Yorkshire

PurpleDaisies · 08/08/2020 17:30

It is mandatory on public transport everywhere @PrincessHoneysuckle

barofsoap · 08/08/2020 17:30

@FlySheMust - we aren't wearing medical grade masks now - most are just wearing bits of cloth or old masks that should have been chucked away ages ago. If the bits of cloth work we should have worn then in March - wouldn't have made any difference to the supplies in the NHS

Jayfee · 08/08/2020 17:31

Well in march the govt was worried that if everyone wore masks it would affect ppe for medical staff. The evidence is that if everyone wears a face covering it reduces transmission. In that respect, it is my business if people ignore the mandatory requirement to wear a mask, without a valid reason.

vodkaredbullgirl · 08/08/2020 17:32

Mask day today.

Is the heat getting to everyone lol

Pudding51 · 08/08/2020 17:32

Easy... if they don't wear a mask they don't get on the bus.... unless of course they have a medical exemption.

Provide them with strong scientific evidence that the use of masks works. Oh wait. There isn't any... guess you're just gonna have to let people make their own decisions like it's a free country still.
Jayfee · 08/08/2020 17:32

Well three teenagers together.. unlikely all 3need exemption

I have seen conductors get on buses in London and photograph anyone not wearing a mask, and taking down their details.

We need more enforcement

NothingIsWrong · 08/08/2020 17:34

MYOB. Wear yours, do your bit, stop policing other people.

blacktop · 08/08/2020 17:36

@Pudding51

Easy... if they don't wear a mask they don't get on the bus.... unless of course they have a medical exemption.

It's not easy though because the U.K. government has decided that nobody needs to prove exemption. All this sunflower lanyard shite going on is nonsense, anybody can get a lanyard just and anyone can claim exemption. Unless they bring in an official medical exemption people can and will do whatever they want.

As an aside I'm quite upset about the sunflower lanyard being used for this, it has devalued it for the future and anyone with a hidden disability aside from the covid situation.

The solution is that you stop working yourself up about it and redirect your thoughts to your own life.

mosquitofeast · 08/08/2020 17:38

carry a copies of this around and hand them one

To ask for ideas to encourage people on buses to wear masks
mosquitofeast · 08/08/2020 17:39

PablosHoney · 08/08/2020 17:39

Oh yeah I can imagine they’d really respond to that 😆
