To ask for ideas to encourage people on buses to wear masks

Jayfee · 08/08/2020 17:19

Ok..every time I go on a bus there are people not wearing masks, and it is highly unlikely they all have a genuine reason not to wear a mask e.g. a group of 3 girls aged about 16-18, a youngish mid twenties couple. The bus drivers let them on, no question. Since 80% of people testing positive for coronovirus show no symptoms, it would seem a likely cause of spreading the virus. I don't want to say anything to the non mask wearers and I assume other mask wearing bus passengers feel the same. Like most people I don't want to cause embarrassment or confrontation. This is an issue on buses and apparently trains and underground and some shops. During a pandemic, aibu to think there must be a way to solve this.

Why don’t you just mind your own?

Who made you the mask police?

FlySheMust · 08/08/2020 17:40

Why do people who hate mask threads open and read them? And then comment?

Crazy.

epythymy · 08/08/2020 17:40

@mosquitofeast

carry a copies of this around and hand them one
What about South Africa? Can't just ignore the countries that don't fit your narrative.
loulouljh · 08/08/2020 17:41

Let them be. You have no idea why they are not wearing one. It is not your business.

PablosHoney · 08/08/2020 17:41

Why does anyone respond to anything.

Sockwomble · 08/08/2020 17:46

"As an aside I'm quite upset about the sunflower lanyard being used for this, it has devalued it for the future and anyone with a hidden disability aside from the covid situation."

I think it has increased the public awareness of it which is a good thing.

Anyone who cares about not spreading covid wouldn't be breaking social distancing rules to hand bits of paper out.

KimMumsnet · 08/08/2020 17:47

Hi, OP. We're moving this thread over to the Coronavirus topic now.

blacktop · 08/08/2020 17:54

@Sockwomble

I think it has increased the public awareness of it which is a good thing.

Initially I thought so, but it hasn't raised awareness of what the lanyard is for, it's just made it a reason for not wearing a mask. It's original 'use' seems to have been forgotten.

OpheliasCrayon · 08/08/2020 17:56

It's none of your business. Why are you wanting to police it ?
Wear yours if you want and that's all you can do

TheGreatWave · 08/08/2020 17:59

Open the emergency door and push 'em out.

That'll learn them.

Sockwomble · 08/08/2020 18:01

I think the number of lanyard wearers who are taking the piss is very small. All the tales of non mask wearers I have heard about don't involve anyone wearing a lanyard - not that anyone has to wear one. I think also think most people take lanyard wearing at face value.

StillDumDeDumming · 08/08/2020 18:04

For those saying there’s no evidence that masks ‘work’ (not sure what that means - presumably stopping transmission?) This is fairly recent and says you need to understand the effectiveness of wearing a mask for self protection or to protect others in terms of relative risk. So we’re pretty high with Covid where I live - in a kind of pre lockdown restriction. So here it would be worth it. I think. www.thelancet.com/journals/lanres/article/PIIS2213-2600(20)30352-0/fulltext

I live in one of those countries where there are no exemptions possible. Either wear a mask or don't use transport. Funny how so many people claim that the vulnerable should shield totally but themselves should be exempt from wearing a mask for 20 minutes... I have no problem with people who change their ways because wearing one is traumatic, but I do find it weird how many people online say that OTHERS should change their ways (like shielding) so they don't have to put in an effort.

feelingverylazytoday · 08/08/2020 18:21

@Pudding51

Easy... if they don't wear a mask they don't get on the bus.... unless of course they have a medical exemption.
Bus drivers are not going to enforce this after what happened to that poor guy in France. It's just relying on the cooperation of the public, as usual.
PablosHoney · 08/08/2020 18:21

I know two people who have got those lanyards to be exempt because they object to wearing masks.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 08/08/2020 19:59

Here public transport have domestic authority (I think that's the English) over their vehicles, stations, waiting spots etc. so no mask no transport (unless exempt).

  • get caught without a ticket = 60 €
  • get caught without a mask = 50 € .
And the controller squad look like comuters, you cannot spot them anymore like you could when I was younger.
Nappyvalley15 · 08/08/2020 20:15

Mosquitofeast
That graph is scientifically illiterate. Correlation doesn't prove causation. There could be lots of other reasons for a low number of cases in those Asian countries that use masks including the way some of them they track down and isolate cases using intrusive and forceful measures.

mosquitofeast · 08/08/2020 20:19

Its a cartoon, @Nappyvalley15
And no, not scientifically illiterate

Nappyvalley15 · 08/08/2020 20:49

Sorry mosquito. Terrible eyesight.

I'm not certain it's been forgotten as I dont really think it was ever known. In my experience very few people had even heard of them prior to this. I think its improved awareness and even though some people will wear one unnecessarily/take the piss I still think it'll be an improvement overall.

Tavannach · 08/08/2020 21:47

I like Preston's slogan - aimed at the under 30s who've caused the latest spike in infections - "Don't Kill Granny".
Maybe I'll get a t-shirt printed.

moretolifethanthis2020 · 08/08/2020 21:52

How about you leave them alone? How about you consider they could all have severe PTSD or mental health issues and met at a support group? How about you literally mind your own business and concentrate on you.

katy1213 · 08/08/2020 21:52

Sit down beside them and start coughing.

DeepTreacle · 08/08/2020 21:58

I can imagine three people who can’t wear masks sticking together because they feel self-conscious not wearing masks but when together it’s easier to go out and about. Especially when it feels like people are going to threaten you for not wearing a mask. But tbh OP I think you’re just going to have to find a way to get used to seeing some people not wearing face coverings, and cope with the fact that you won’t know why that is.

LangClegsInSpace · 08/08/2020 23:04

Wear your own mask. Mind your own business. Job done.
