Positive test and loss of smell and taste

I first felt unwell last Wednesday, just generally achy and tired then a very slight cough. I lost my sense of smell entirely on Friday so ordered a test which came back positive on Sunday.

I have absolutely no sense of smell and can’t taste anything Sad I could sit in bleach and not smell it at all. My other symptoms (Sore throat and bad cough) seem to be easing somewhat , I still have a dry cough but my senses show no signs of returning.

I’m really struggling!! DP also has Covid-19 but he has not lost his sense of smell/taste so he can’t understand why I’m so miserable.
I just wondered how long your sense of smell took to return or if it never has? I don’t think I can cope if it doesn’t return, I’m autistic and finding this symptom particularly hard to cope with. I know I’m lucky that we haven’t needed medical attention so far but I’m really struggling, I’ve been sat in tears today all morning.

I was reading an article on the BBC where Camilla was saying Price Charles' sense of taste and smell were mostly back but it was only recent, so I think his were missing for a couple of months but then started to recover. So you may have a little wait, but I think it will come back eventually.

I know two people who had this and it came back in about 6 weeks for one, 8 weeks for the other. It's not permanent. Hope you feel better soon.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 07/07/2020 13:41

My test was positive on May 11th I still have no sense of smell, and my taste is weakened. Can only taste strong tastes.
Smell came back at work last night, lasted about a half hour and has now gone again. It's happened a few times.
Still coughing here.
It goes on and on.
Everyone is different your Dh needs to be a bit more kind, just cause he isn't experiencing it, doesn't mean it isn't there and isn't upsetting you.

Ginplease29 · 07/07/2020 14:09

Thank you for replying, it’s reassuring to read different experiences of it. I guess I’ll just have to wait it out and hope for the best.
Yeah I know DP should be more understanding, he’s looking forward to going out for meals etc once we’re better, he keeps on about it but it won’t be enjoyable at all for me without my senses.

Mine started to return slowly after three weeks, which was mid April. However it hasn't yet fully returned. And three months later it's still not nearly as acute as it used to be, but it is more or less there and it's not the major problem it was when I literally couldn't smell anything.

Popfan · 07/07/2020 16:01

I lost my sense of smell and taste completely and it returned 7 days later.

rc22 · 07/07/2020 16:13

I lost mine on a Saturday. Could smell and taste a little on the Tuesday and came back pretty much fully by Thursday. I really feel for those people for whom it's lasting longer.

rc22 · 07/07/2020 16:15

Also it was one of the last symptoms I got so your DP may find he gets it yet!!

cannaethink · 07/07/2020 18:41

I completely lost smell and taste at the end of March. They took a couple of months to come back and I think they are still reduced now.
I really struggled with it too! I found crunchy foods at least gave my mouth a little bit of interest so had nachos on just about everything Grin Still, it was handy as I ate all the food I wasn’t keen on that had been sitting at the back of the cupboards!

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 08/07/2020 15:08

My sense of smell has been back all day today, fingers crossed it's back for good.

SaskiaRembrandt · 08/07/2020 15:38

For me it lasted about a week, but then I had a couple of weeks when I could smell and taste things, but nothing smelt or tasted right, if you see what I mean.

I feel for anyone who has it long term, it really is horrible, you don't enjoy anything you eat.

Helenj1977 · 08/07/2020 15:46

Can I ask how you got coronavirus?

I hope you get better and that your senses return soon x

thewisp · 08/07/2020 15:51

Can I ask how you got coronavirus? Hmm

Helenj1977 · 08/07/2020 15:54

@thewisp I still don't know one person whose had it. No one is SD here anymore. I'm in the South West and life seems to be normal again.

I guess I just want to hear how someone got it recently.

SunbathingDragon · 08/07/2020 15:56

A couple of colleagues had covid in March and still no sense of smell.

flowers12 · 08/07/2020 16:08

Mine started to come back gradually after 5 weeks. Hope you feel better soon!

AtTheWinchester · 08/07/2020 16:23

Just curious, those that lost their sense of smell, did it fade away slowly or just go?
Did anyone loose their sense of smell but not taste?
I don't have any other symptoms but my sense of smell isn't as strong as is used to be and seems to fade but then come back for a bit. Confused

Greenphonegirl · 08/07/2020 16:25

I tested positive in April and lost my taste and smell a week in. It took around 6 to 7 weeks to fully return

SaskiaRembrandt · 08/07/2020 16:28

For me it just went. I went to bed able to smell and taste, woke up the next morning and couldn't.
chaoticisatroll55 · 08/07/2020 16:31

I didn't develop chest problems until day 9. I just felt tired, achy etc until then.

Northernsoullover · 08/07/2020 16:33

I'm also curious as to where you picked it up OP. I think the reason so many people are curious is because there are so many different theories on its transmission. I hope you feel better soon.

Northernsoullover · 08/07/2020 16:34

abscent.org/smell-training
Maybe this will be of some use?

AtTheWinchester · 08/07/2020 16:46

@SaskiaRembrandt thank you for that

Littlepond · 08/07/2020 16:54

I lost smell and taste end of March. It returnedc but not fully, by ears of May. Early June everything started smelling and tasting wrong and horrid. I’m just coming out if that phase now, coffee is still gross but most things taste almost normal now.

Ginplease29 · 08/07/2020 17:11

Thank you for the response, online everyone seems to say different things about when their senses returned, I guess it just depends on the individual. I’m trying to take each day as it comes but I’m finding it very distressing.

We don’t know for sure how we got it, both working from home so the only places we have been is the supermarket and some shops in the city centre. I’ve heard people coughing out and about, it astounds me how selfish people can be! Just wandering around with clear symptoms. We don’t know anybody else who has had it either. I have begun to think that it is inevitable most people will get it eventually unless they find a vaccine. I’m just so grateful I did not visit my elderly mum, I would never forgive myself Sad
