I do not envy you one bit. I know we all talk about wanting to be safe, but honestly, you lot have the shitty end of the stick right now. I don't know how you can make a job like that safe. I hope that people are sensible and it is not as bad as we fear.

Good luck for tomorrow night and take care as much as you can.

Mate they're going to Camden High Street, not the Somme.

nellodee · 03/07/2020 15:57

Are you volunteering to go out tomorrow and break up a hundred drunken fights? I feel sorry for the A&E staff as well. And the pub landlords and barstaff who have to say "no". I hope I'm wrong and people are sensible. If I'm being overly dramatic and everyone sensibly sits round sipping long drinks slowly, I'll be very happy.

I wonder how many people who were clapping for NHS workers will be getting pissed and then abusing them this weekend

We’re bracing ourselves, I think would be a fair way to say it,” she said. “It actually is quite serious, we have emergency departments having to work in a very different way than they did before because we have to keep vulnerable patients safe so we can’t have crowded emergency departments

Lonelycrab · 03/07/2020 16:16

I’m expecting carnage. Just as the other week proved at Bournemouth, this country has more than its fair share of absolute wankers.

And then mop head decides to open the pubs at 6am. Ffs.

10storeylovesong · 03/07/2020 16:33

We may not be going to the Somme, but we have had our rest days cancelled, meaning we are working 12 straight days, most of those are 12 hour shifts. We will face people spitting and coughing at us, not knowing whether they have the virus. We will probably have colleagues assaulted and injured while splitting up fights and trying to help people. We won't get food or drink breaks during those 12 hour shifts, and will grab something quick while crammed in the back of the carrier with 8 other people. We'll get very little sleep in between shifts, leaving our immune system at extra risk of the virus.

We haven't come on here asking for thanks (although appreciate it!!) as that's our job - it's what we signed up for and what we get paid for. But yes, we're all pretty much dreading this weekend.

Pelleas · 03/07/2020 16:40

It's a mistake to open them at 6am. People will drink all day. 6pm would have been more sensible.

Mintypylonsfryingsurplus · 03/07/2020 16:40

I thought pubs had to take names etc for track and trace? Also time slots for pub goers?
I hope that pubs dont over serve already drunk revellers to the point they are fighting and puking. I hope your first weekend back goes well and trouble free Flowers

5lilducks · 03/07/2020 16:45

Sorry to sound really silly/ignorant -but what is happening Saturday night ? Shock

ifonly4 · 03/07/2020 16:45

They're struggling enough here with trying to separate groups of teenagers who are hanging around the town causing arguments, getting in shoppers way (never used to have this - it's so sad). Four lpolice cars turned up the other day (can see them from work) but I think the young people were standing their ground and not move. I don't think it's been great for the police for a while now. Have to say I don't envy the bouncers either.

Whitney168 · 03/07/2020 16:48

The fact that any pub will even consider opening at 6AM just shows that there will be idiots who will abuse it. No-one who is going to be sensible about drinking and coronavirus guidelines is going to be rocking up to a pub at 6AM.

I also feel sorry for all that have to deal with the aftermath.

user16386689775 · 03/07/2020 16:50

My sympathy remains with the many, many vulnerable people failed by the police on a daily basis. Who will be assaulted by drunken partners and then have the police tell them they asked for it or that their assault is a waste of precious police resources to investigate.

If some police actually do the job they were appointed to do this weekend then that's a positive change. The handwringing is unnecessary.

Shame they don't bother the rest of the time when it's out of the public eye...

Pelleas · 03/07/2020 16:50

@5lilducks Pubs in England (apart from Leicester) are allowed to open again from 6am tomorrow. It's predicted that many will take advantage of this.

5lilducks · 03/07/2020 16:55

@Pelleas oh right, didn't realise that. The post mentioning Camden High Street threw me. Thought there was something going on in Camden tomorrow Blush

ClashCityRocker · 03/07/2020 17:08

Just out of pure curiosity, does anyone know a pub that is opening at 6am?

Many won't have the licence for it surely? I know you can get 24 hour licences, but I don't think many pubs actually have them.

In my city there's quite a few not opening at all, as they're not ready yet or wanting to do a soft launch.

The restrictions the pubs I follow are putting in place seem quite strict (and rightly so). I feel sorry for the bar staff trying to enforce them after people have had a few...

ButteryPuffin · 03/07/2020 17:08

Pubs can only actually open from 6am if they've applied for a licence specifically to do that, though. Our wonderful PM has forgotten to mention that small detail in all his blustering speeches.

Police, bar staff, NHS workers and anyone else dealing with the pissed-up public this Saturday all have my sympathy. I will be steering clear.

HeIenaDove · 03/07/2020 17:09

Clash Wetherspoons are opening at 8am.

itsallamysterytome · 03/07/2020 17:10

Should have opened them on Monday, at least some people would be back in work on Tuesday morning and not so eager to 'go for it'.
Monday doesn't have the weekend fun vibe to it either.

Hope the police don't have too much crap to deal with, they really are getting a rubbish time of it lately.

NeverTwerkNaked · 03/07/2020 17:12

Huge sympathy for the police from me.

billybogeye · 03/07/2020 17:13

@Pelleas

It's a mistake to open them at 6am. People will drink all day. 6pm would have been more sensible.
I imagine that the majority of pubs do not have a licence to serve alcohol that early
PatriciaHolm · 03/07/2020 17:13

Quite a number around here aren't opening - I'm in Epsom, where the Derby is being run tomorrow (no spectators) which is normally a huge weekend, so a number - especially those up near the course - aren't opening, which is sensible.

The80sweregreat · 03/07/2020 17:16

Good luck to all the key workers this weekend. I'm grateful you'll be around!

HeIenaDove · 03/07/2020 17:18

NHS 72nd birthday is on Sunday.

ClashCityRocker · 03/07/2020 17:38

Helena ugh. Given the owner's attitude, I can't imagine he's given two figs to the guidelines either.

I feel really sorry for the bar staff, door staff, police and healthcare workers.

Why bloody open on a Saturday? Surely a Monday would have been better?
