Went to Costco with DH. The way people were behaving when wearing masks was quite astounding. Lots of people coming so close to me that their shoulders were touching mine. Most people wearing masks kept pulling them down so they were hanging around their necks. One bloke pulled his down to cough then put it back on Confused. The staff at the tills were mainly wearing theirs on their chins or removing them to shout at other staff members across the shop. Honestly why bother?!

I have been wearing mine as I am pregnant, but I have come to realise that nobody around me is wearing them. I counted 3 people in Morrisons wearing one the other day, in the entire shop. None of the staff were wearing any. The only way the masks work is if the vast majority wear them.

Basically, me wearing mine is utterly pointless.

They only protectothers from you if worn correctly. You are not really protected by wearig one. Unless medical grade and follow meedical/scientific instructions which we generally don,t. (eg not touching mask, replaceng after certain legth of time.)

Scottishgirl85 · 01/07/2020 21:12

Unless masks are mandated you really can't complain about it.

EnlightenedOwl · 01/07/2020 21:13

I was getting a takeaway coffee today. Customer, wearing mask (why?) trying to make herself understood through mask to server behind screen with a visor and mask on. Highly entertaining

Titsywoo · 01/07/2020 21:15

Not really complaining - just don't see why they bother in the first place!

Oh I think the best I've seen is wearing a mask on the chin & gloves... Then coughing into gloved hand Hmm 🤦‍♀️

PinkFondantFancy · 01/07/2020 21:19

They're a magical forcefield, didn't you realise?

TopBitchoftheWitches · 01/07/2020 21:20

I work in retail, I am fed up with the mask wearing, glove wearing public coming right up next to me.
They don't seem understand they are not protecting themselves and infact by wearing gloves making the situation worse.
There is a reason retail workers don't wear either, it's because it's pointless unless you are wearing a mask because you have covid.
Wash your hands !

goldenshoe · 01/07/2020 21:37

The masks help to stop you spreading covid. By wearing a mask those customer are protecting you, not themselves.

ScrapThatThen · 01/07/2020 21:38

We have to wear them in the office now (NHS) and almost without exception my colleagues pull them down when talking to me, or forget them and walk down the corridor with their arm over their face.

agentnully · 01/07/2020 21:41

I've seen some pretty stupid/entitled behaviour from some people at Costco so this doesn't surprise me.

Having said that, I've seen it everywhere.

I'm past annoyed. Now I'm just sad that people are dying needlessly because others can't follow simple instructions. Or use common sense.

Cheesypea · 01/07/2020 21:42

Dont get me started the littering of gloves and masks.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 01/07/2020 21:43

Given they are wearing gloves all over the stores as well, they are not wearing the masks for our benefit.

iwishiwasonhol · 01/07/2020 21:44

im wearing gloves for work (supermarket ) cos my eczema has flared up due to the constant hand washing /gelling ,I am hand gelling the gloves every 20 min as I would my hands

bengalcat · 01/07/2020 21:46

I always give the mask and glove wearing public a particularly wide berth primarily because their use of it is incorrect - if it makes them feel safer though then so be it - if it helps at all a mask protects others from you but of course unless it’s single use and covering your mouth and nose then the potential benefit to others is lost .

fortmums · 01/07/2020 22:19

Yad-y-yada. I think England’s covid death rate is appalling, and the anti-mask propaganda mahoosively contributing.

Egghead68 · 01/07/2020 22:21

I went to the Whittington Hospital last week. Most people (staff and patients) were wandering around with no masks or face-coverings, even though they are legally required. The HCP who saw me didn’t put a mask on until I insisted.

Sunnydayshereatlast · 01/07/2020 22:26

Will just leave this here!!

I wear mine partly because if I do get it I dont want to pass it on but mainly as a reminder that I take this seriously. It worked during lockdown but I have noticed that since more people started wearing them as you say, they are acting as if it is some magic germ repelling forcefield, so as long as they have it somewhere on their person, it will protect them. Hmm

Jellykat · 01/07/2020 22:44

Its not just Costco, and mask wearing..in the last 10 days i've noticed a massive increase of piss taking in social distancing. One lady in M&S thought if she tiptoed while passing me at 2ft away, it would be fine, and no she wasnt wearing a mask.
What makes it worse is i'm in Wales, so we're behind in the lockdown lifting.

PMTRex · 01/07/2020 22:49

I had to go to hospital today and despite MASSIVE signs saying everyone had to wear a mask and a big box of masks and hand gel at the entrance, several staff and visitors weren't wearing them.

Also several people were outside in a non- socially distanced group with their masks round their chins so they could smoke 🤦🏻‍♀️

Egghead68 · 01/07/2020 23:02

Yes I got told in the Whittington Hospital “we don’t need to wear masks in this hospital unless we are treating patients”.Hmm

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 01/07/2020 23:15

A lady asked me to reach up for something for her today

I moved over slightly and then kind of hovered because if I’d kept moving id have been right next to her

But i think cos she Had a mask on she didnt care that i was stood next to her 😳

LinManWellWellWell · 01/07/2020 23:24

Not sure about the generalisations about the ‘mask wearing public’ (not from you OP but other posters.) Not every person wearing a mask suddenly believes themselves to be invincible. My husband comes from a country where it is the norm to wear a mask when you have a cold - to protect others. We wear them knowing they do not make us invincible but as an added precaution to vulnerable members of the public.

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 01/07/2020 23:26

Not every person wearing a mask suddenly believes themselves to be invincible

Well no, I certainly don’t believe that, nor does anyone i know

This lady did thoughtful
