Went to Costco with DH. The way people were behaving when wearing masks was quite astounding. Lots of people coming so close to me that their shoulders were touching mine. Most people wearing masks kept pulling them down so they were hanging around their necks. One bloke pulled his down to cough then put it back on Confused. The staff at the tills were mainly wearing theirs on their chins or removing them to shout at other staff members across the shop. Honestly why bother?!

This lady did though

Bloody autocorrect

Definitely see more people wearing masks incorrectly than correctly. It’s no good without a robust communications campaign to clearly explain the reasons and benefits, and even then there will be people who don’t understand or don’t care or both.

CountreeGurl · 01/07/2020 23:36

I've seen someone remove a mask to have a fag, the irony

bitofasleuth · 01/07/2020 23:39

@PinkFondantFancy

They're a magical forcefield, didn't you realise?
I know what you mean. People think you can wear a mask and you can go as close to people as you like.

Does my head in. Just back off.

PyongyangKipperbang · 01/07/2020 23:49

Its the nose left uncovered thing that winds me up.

Why bother?! Save yourself the expense and go without!

DamnYankee · 01/07/2020 23:52

I'm seeing pretty good mask hygiene around here.
I don't like them, especially in this heat; however, I will wear one when shopping. I'm not sure how effective it is - the numbers keeping changing - but I feel it's respectful and better than doing nothing.
Unfortunately, I have a small face and my disposable keeps slipping, even with the "bendy" part at the top that keeps the mask on your nose bridge. I know I'm not supposed to touch it, but it's either touch and pull up or mask slips...

littlealexhorne · 02/07/2020 00:00

I was in a (massive) queue outside the post office yesterday. Two people were wearing masks, or to be more accurate, their chins were. One of these decided that her mask meant she could stand right up the arse of the woman infront of her in the queue (and blow her cigarette smoke all over her).

I have this problem so I took the ear hook bits and tied them off slightly so they held it up properly.
saleorbouy · 02/07/2020 00:10

Most people I've seen wearing masks are doing so ineffectively, either on their chin only with the nose poking out, with it loose around the face, or hanging on the neck. In any of these guises it's just a waste of time.
If handled and disposed of in correctly it also poses a threat.
They provide some protection to those around d you if worn properly from coughs and sneezes but are hardly the all defending shield many would love them to be. Out of 6 people in a queue at the checkout only two were them correctly and of these wearers only one sanitised their hands exiting the store.
The second wave is coming unless the public remain vigilant about hand washing, distancing and wearing masks correctly.

@Sunnydayshereatlast

Will just leave this here!!
Governments should use it in a mass education programme. It's certainly eye catching and effective. 😁

I think the best one I saw was a man carrying his pharmacy bag who was in gloves, with his mask pulled down so he could eat an apple and adjust his glasses. Removing a mask to cough has beaten than pretty firmly though.

There's a lot of variation in mask wearing capabilities, I see this as a practice period for autumn. There really needs to be a big public information campaign on how to wear them safely.

midgebabe · 02/07/2020 07:29

It is not mandated that you wear a mask, as someone said earlier

It is however mandated that is if you break the 2 meter guideline then you must take additional precautions which could include wearing of masks, properly

Not that they gave much guideance about what counts as additional precautions ( being back to back not fa e to face was another suggestion )

That's what happens when it gets complicated and relies on sense , fewer people can cope

I see this a lot, makes me laugh each time!
FrancesHaHa · 02/07/2020 07:45

I had to take the tube last week where masks are mandatory. Everyone had one going through the barriers but there were a noticeable number of people who had pulled theirs down once on the platform/ tube.

mostwonderfultime · 02/07/2020 07:50

I was horrified by this yesterday in Asda. People wearing masks not socially distancing, touching the mask all the time then touching the food. Made me feel so uncomfortable I couldn’t get out fast enough.

Defenestratethecat · 02/07/2020 08:11

Not many wearing masks here. Older people seem to be wearing them correctly - younger ones appear to think they're a fashion statement and using them as an insouciant neck covering Grin.

There needs to be a proper govt advertising campaign on when and how to use masks and people who do not have genuine reasons need to stop making excuses as to why they can't wear them.

Evenstar · 02/07/2020 08:18

I saw an older lady trying to eat a sandwich by poking it round the side of her mask, she had taken a towel to cover the park bench she was sitting on too. She was only near what I assume was her daughter and grandson and at least 2 metres away from them Confused

BarbaraofSeville · 02/07/2020 14:36

It's the 'hanging off one ear' one that gets me. Every single time I have been out in public, I have seen at least one person with a mask hanging off their ear. Why?

And don't get me started on the man who I saw in the supermarket holding his mobile phone in his gloved hand. Because I'd be willing to bet that he'd have touched his mobile phone with his bare hands without thinking to clean his phone, thus rendering the wearing of gloves totally pointless.

I've worked in labs with radioactive material. I've taught students the correct use of gloves and other PPE and going out in public these days is a constant illustration of how not to do it.

Have you tried twisting the elastic into a figure of 8 before you hook it on your ears.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 02/07/2020 14:50

There needs to be clear guidance on
A) which masks are actually effective
B) correct usage of masks.

I've been making our own - 4 layers of cotton with a pocket to insert a filter (currently using kitchen roll). I've been told these arent effective. I've been told they are effective. I've been told I should be using the blue medical ones as they are the best. I dont actually know anymore

Kaykay066 · 02/07/2020 14:53

That hurts my ears you can get a wee extender thing that hooks behind your head although I wear one for 11 hours at work, in extreme heat wrapped in plastic and I do know how to remove it and how to wear it. And it frustrates me to see people wearing it incorrectly out and about, or moaning about it. I mean If my colleagues and I can manage for long shifts in the heat with plastic aprons/ppe still then you can for 30 mins in Tesco. We all do wear ours except in the main hospital corridors.

I have been taking extra uniforms to work due to the heat it’s exhausting, no air and no fans allowed am really not enjoying my job at the moment

BarbaraofSeville · 02/07/2020 14:56

You will have also been told that you shouldn't be using the blue medical ones because they need to be left for medical staff and carers Smile

I think any type of mask has some effectiveness, providing that it is worn correctly, ie fitting snugly over the mouth and nose. The medical grade ones are more effective, but the home made cloth ones aren't useless.

But obviously protection needs differ between people who are working closely all day every day with patients who are known to have COVID-19 and people who are just walking past other people in the supermarket who might, but probably don't.

Legoandloldolls · 02/07/2020 14:57

I cant get excited about it either way. I made my own home made mask. Probably would do somebody else a favour if I sneezed while out I guess. Sometimes if I'm in a store near someone coughing without covering their mouth at all I sometimes put it on and run in the other direction.

I have a biology degree but cant decide if it not mandated everywhere do to UK shortages of ppe or because they genuinely don't help.

I'm enjoying life but only going out if I have a need to ( not just a life or death need - if it's good for my MH that's good enough for me).

The virus hasn't gone, the summer vaccine didn't appear by miracle. 43,000 deaths and that's a long, long way off the 450,000 to get to herd immunity.

We either will see more deaths or not. theres is still the strong possibility this will kill ten times more people yet.

I cant judge others for being lax after three months or being scared it's not over. I'm just living my life the best I can. I cant invest in others choices. I could still br in the next 400,000 deaths so I'm going to enjoy life.

Neither choice is wrong or illegal 🤷‍♀️

Also men with beards wearing FFP 2/3 with valves and seals. Total waste of time and money. Unless you have a smooth skin they won’t seal. The FFP 2/3 need to be fit tested if they are to be effective, this takes about 10- 15 mins by a qualified fit tester with specific chemicals and a fit testing hood.
By all means wear a simple face covering but don’t try and get technical because it’s a waste of money and time.
If you do have a mask with a valve you still need to wear another mask over the top because valve allows your unfiltered breath out so contaminating anyone stood in front of you.
Glove wearing is a whole separate nightmare..
