Special time to go out for shielding

Thought you might like this film, petition too. For the other scary people to stay in so the others can go out without having to see any of them

I'd tell DH as he is on the same meds but he is out at work today sadly

The idea is to set a time when people who aren't shielding stay indoors, so those who are shielding can leave their homes and know they won't come close to someone with coronavirus."

Ds is shielding so I get it’s frustrating but, especially at this point in proceedings, that is completely unenforceable and unrealistic to expect the vast majority to stay in like that.

People who are shielding can go out now at a time that suits them.

It’s a good idea, they had it in other countries, but think the time for this has past. Most people are no longer advised to stay at home (unless shielding) and can visit shops and go in days out to attractions, have picnics etc. If a dedicated shielding hour is introduced, what is everyone on a day our supposed to do, go sit in their cars for an hour and wait? This would have been more useful back when we were told only to go out for exercise once a day.

Ha ha. Would never work. People just wouldn't comply.

2am is generally quiet though, go out then

I find it quite difficult, as in our case my DH is on the same meds but he would never expect me to stay in - in fact that was not in the guidance we had. He's at work and both DC back at school.

Also those meds, on further discussion with the consultant and on here, mean 'moderate' risk, (unless have e.g. diabetes heart disease or older) He is over 50 too so would be higher risk than this young woman however.

I’d really appreciate this. I find that people have 0 respect regarding the 2m distance and I’ve had verbal abusive for wearing a mask on several occasions. I’m shielding and I’m scared. Twice I’ve had teenagers come close and spit as I passed.

We’ve had two rapes in our town, one being at 10.30pm in an area I’ve been going for my walks and as a single woman I’m scared to go out in the night hours like 2 am etc.

I should have said we’ve had two rapes in six weeks in our town.

Nice idea but where and which hour? I can see this might have made sense in April but it’s not easy to implement now. Because with schools back, people back at work etc I’m not sure when would work - I’d happily move my recreational walk or trip to Tesco, but I can’t not walk to collect my child from school, nor are working people going to be able to just not commute for an hour. Bin collectors, street cleaners, Tesco deliveries etc are still going to be on the streets. Maybe if it was just in parks or something it could work. I’m not sure the kind of person that spits at someone would necessarily comply though.

NameChange84 what time would you pick for this? Would have to be either early in the morning or at night for anyone to comply with it so it didn’t conflict with people going out for walks, picnics and days out etc considering all these things are now allowed for the general population.

Never mind interrupting walks and picnics lots of people are back at work. This includes travelling to work and fro people like in home carers moving between properties? How could it be enforced?
It might have worked in the height of lockdown but not now

How ridiculous - and I am shielding.

People are out and about non-stop now. Are you going to prevent all shift workers/workmen/care workers/delivery drivers/postmen etc etc etc from going about their business for an hour so some people may go for a walk if they feel like it?

I understand exactly where she's coming from - letting us go out now, just as everyone else is being allowed out without restriction, makes it impossible to socially distance if you live in a densely populated area. A designated hour would be fantastic but it won't happen.

Not so much a shielding hour for outdoors, as those shielding can go now out for exercise and it’s unfair to those not shielding and would be impossible to police.
I do think though that those shielding will find it harder to integrate back into normality and as such more should be done to help them, if say the first hour of trading In supermarkets and even non essential shops was set aside for those who are vulnerable to the virus (And had to prove with letter /text on entry) some may feel able to go back to some level of normality.
The first hour being preferable due to the stores being deep cleaned overnight.
The emotional and mental health of those shielding has been hugely impacted and even when it is proven safe there will be many who will not leave the house due to the fear this pandemic has created.
A little empathy and assistance towards families affected by shielding is required .
Remember that those shielding are not all elderly (not that the elderly should be dismissed either) but there are huge numbers of children, young adults and under 75s who are affected by this.
Everyone deserves a quality of life and normality not just those who do not fall in vulnerable categories.
It should be noted that shielding people also work too so economically it makes sense to ease them back into society too.

Everyone deals with things differently and people who are shielding do need to be more cautious than the general "healthy" population

It did look as if the man was quite overweight and could have done with going out for a run to be honest.

While I feel for people in this position ,I doubt it will work very well TBH! People are pleased at the small amount of freedom, and will not give it up easily .Things are very confusing ATM anyway .A single person can meet up with a family ,but a family may not meet with another family unless outdoors! We still have certain hours for food shopping dedicated to The elderly and NHS workers ,and our local Supermarket will only let one person shop at a time!Adding on more rules at this late stage will not work .Plus BJ/The Govt are thinking of reducing this 2m rule at some point as well.

It's a fucking ridiculous idea. What if you're not shielding but need to travel to/from work during that period (which in plenty of cases involve travel on foot or by bike)? Lots of people work shifts - especially if they're doing the type of jobs that people can't do WFH.

I know someone who is shielding. They are using their own judgement and going for a daily walk at 5am to maintain fitness / mental health. That's sensible.

Mandating everyone else stay indoors is not sensible, as lots of the people out and about will be out there for unavoidable reasons.

Would you expect your postman to stop doing their round during shielding hour?

Sorry, no. Whilst I am sympathetic to shielders I can’t see this working, people just wouldn’t comply.

The thing is that on a general walk in the park, there is very little change of catching it walking past someone. Also very little chance of even asking anyone with it as well (1 in 1700?)

So to expect people who may be on their way to work, shopping, school etc for that seems quite unreasonable.

It's too late for that, people are at work and more places are open. Plus people don't do what's asked anyway.

My dad is not officially shielding but he is vulnerable. He goes for a walk early morning. It was important for his health to be active.
