UK Holidays - people now more welcome?

I've noticed a few people starting to talk about booking or wanting a UK holiday and it no longer seems to attract the vitriol it did.

A few weeks ago the mere suggestion of anybody daring to want to visit Cornwall or the Lake District resulted in abuse.

Are the people there coming around to the possibility that they might get visitors from elsewhere coming to stay soon?

People in Cornwall hate tourists all year round so it’ll be still the same for them.
Why do you care what they think anyway? I’m going to Norfolk in August and I don’t give a fuck about what they think of this.

Just curious. Not going on a summer holiday myself but just wondered why the attacks on visitors seem to have dropped away.

We are having to postpone a foreign holiday so now will be doing a UK one on September.

I don’t care what the locals think of holiday makers. No one owns a view, (Unless they have a bloody huge private estate) historic area, or public space. Hopefully most locals will be friendly although the only ones we need to interact with are pubs, restaurants, tourist attractions so they should be welcoming presumably.

Locals ‘attacked’ tourists at the beginning, before lockdown was in full force. The virus was mainly in larger towns and cities then and people living in rural communities didn’t want the virus to be brought to them by the swarms of people who turned up.

Maybe they were being hostile because people were being dicks and travelling in hoards to these places which had no facilities open including car parks, public toilets, leaving litter and mess everywhere. If everything opens as normal that shouldn’t be a problem.

@theonlywayisapple do you always get out of bed the wrong side! Of course tourists are welcome in cornwall. They will be welcomed with open arms.

The folks from Cornwall were amongst the most vocal is telling people not to come.

I meant that comment for Chilli18.

I think it was because no facilities are / were open , likewise toilets and car parks.
Many parked on narrow roads which tractors or farm vehicles need to use.
I live in Cumbria , and kept away from the national park. The car parks were closed and areas used to park had felled trees blocking the way ( I'm talking about the Buttermere / Loweswater area )
Once everyone was allowed to travel it still took a week or two for those logs to be removed.
We took an evening drive there about 10 days ago ( about 20 mins in car) on a Monday. What we saw was pretty upsetting . Ancient stone walls had rocks removed to make bbqs , scorched earth, foil bbqs left, beer cans / bottles on the floor. Human poo .bad
It was a sad sight of a beautiful area that has free roaming sheep on .
It can be argued that a few spoil it for the masses , but what we saw, it was like the opposite.
I'm not saying don't come , don't enjoy yourself , but please , please respect the area you are in . Bbqs are not for wild open spaces ( fire risk , risk to wildlife )

I wasnt being sarcastic at all. You would be welcome in cornwall definetely. A few people were vocal about not coming that was a very small majority. Though As per @VictoriaBun comment this did happened here so you can see why some people were upset. Once everythings opened up again this shouldnt be the case.

They may have been a minority those people being so hostile but they made a lot of noise.

VictoriaBun - that's just awful. Some people are just dreadful. Even where I live there's lots of discarded wipes and stuff and I am pretty sure that most are local and could easily take their rubbish home with them.

The 'folks in Cornwall' are a minority. The ones I know tend to be of a similar ilk to those extremists yesterday.

They tend not to have a grasp on the bigger picture or any understanding of the news beyond facebook.

If I'm honest I was rather hoping that some of the people who were so vociferous a month ago might come back and say whether they feel differently now.

This forum moves so fast though that topics drop off the first page within minutes.

I expect the do because this is a different time. People in Cornwall didn’t want people coming down to second homes and holiday lets, getting ill and the only hospital in the area couldn’t cope. That was at the time when there were many hundreds of people dying a day and the nightingale hospitals were being built.

I don't think there's much point going anywhere unless pubs, restaurants and places to visit are open.

Have seen posts on FB from Lake District and Anglesey only yesterday from the Tourist Boards asking visitors to stay away.
We have cancelled our overseas holiday and were thinking we might take a break in the UK last minute in August depending on the situation, availability etc.

I live in Cornwall (Although in the interest of full disclosure am definitely not 'Cornish' as have only been here 10 years, and OH and I both work in hospitality so perhaps these factors colour my view) and i am certainly keen for the tourists to come! Yes a percentage of them do seem to behave like thoughtless selfish idiots when here but I know also a percentage of the locals do too 🤷 that's just people for you! Either way the fact of the matter is we Need tourists here, a large number of the population rely on them for a living, and virus or not we need money coming in....

However to answer your question, yes a LOT of people here are still being very vocal about not wanting people to come... It's crazy! Some have changed their minds a little - mostly those directly affected like retail and hospitality workers/owners - but for the most part it's a big No... Although as someone upthread has already pointed out the Cornish hate tourists anyway so who will notice! 😂

According to the Sunday Times, if you go to Cornwall you still risk the pitchfork brigade so go elsewhere and spend your money somewhere where it will be appreciated.

I am still not entirely sure why the Cornish think the rest of us all have the virus. We've all been subject to the same lockdown rules.

@CarlaH The Anglesey one will be because in Wales we are only allowed to travel five miles or so to visit one other person. Tourism isn't yet allowed, neither are visitors from other countries in the UK.

To be fair there was a load of hate towards city folk especially Londoners! I am half Welsh but will definitely give that beautiful Pembrokeshire coast a miss and Cornwall too for a few years. I would rather spend my hard earned holiday money on an area that makes us feel welcome.

When you are in an area with only one main hospital and very few people with the virus, can people understand why the locals weren’t too keen on people coming from London which had the highest rate.

Then when people came could come here they shit on the beaches. That is not particularly pleasant either.

Although more places will be open in the summer there will restrictions and queuing and social distancing will be the norm, so it won’t be the holiday many people will be dreaming of

I'm in Cornwall and usually work in hospitality (furloughed at the moment). I definitely want tourists to come. I've seen some nasty, vociferous comments on local Facebook groups, from people who, if they bothered take a step back and critically think about it, do actually benefit from tourism. Food producers, shop workers etc.

The pitchfork vigilantes have been doing my head in. I've tackled a few on FB, but they are so entrenched in their anti-tourist mindset it's ridiculous. I get that they are worried about the local hospital, but I do think this has given many a platform to be particularly nasty. FWIW, I've been to the beach a few times, and the ones close to us have been pretty quiet so all the shouting about second homeowners being here is certainly not my experience at all. I live on the north coast, very close to a town popularised by a famous celebrity chef, so prime second home territory.

If the govt say U.K. holidays are fine, then the locals will just have to suck it up because people will come whether they like it or not.

That was when nothing was open, no facilities, and the was a genuine worry that people were bringing the virus from towns and cities that were badly affected to an area that wasn't. See the difference???
