We need to rise up about the lack of education for our children

Please do this. Please join the Twitter movement #usforthem
Please write to your MPs
Please talk about this.

Our children are missing out on their fundamental human right of an education.

The children of regular families are suffering (all 5 of mine are suffering desperately), but those in vulnerable families are suffering even further. The gap between these children will be HUGE

I am a teacher and a mother. I am ready to go back to work full time and with the 'old normal'. I am also type 1 diabetic.

Please help us rise up to get our children educated. Our children have been totally forgotten about. Throughout my career I've had it rammed down my throat about how school is a safe place for so many children. They don't care about these children now.

I am amazed so many people have just accepted this. It has gone on for too long now.

MN is mentioned in Camilla Tominey's article in the Telegraph this morning:

Yet the latest Government u-turn on reopening schools to all primary children for a month before the summer holidays suggests Downing Street may have mislaid its Mumsnet log-in details.

MoreW1ne · 10/06/2020 08:57

Thats why I don't go outside in a thunderstorm Dory. Can't be dealing with that unnecessary risk in my life.

Weepinggreenwillow · 10/06/2020 10:19

margonal lol that is brilliant. It is positive that at least this is being talked about a bit more now. The situation can not be allowed to continue.

Too many people have lost all sense of proportion

alec well lets hope the government now introduce guidance forcing all school to close whenever thunder storms are forescast.(oh no wait a minute....that would be ridiculous!!!!! Grin)

You joke, but.... if the government all the sudden decides to be methodical in its approach to risk (I realise there's no chance of this happening today or tomorrow, but in another universe far far away it might happen) then there's no good reason to not close schools in particularly bad flu seasons after Coronamania 2020.

In Belgium, kids are back at school with no social distancing. This is great news. If they can manage normal, then hopefully there will be precedent for normal in September.

Delatron · 10/06/2020 13:18

I thought Belgium was hit quite badly by the virus or was I wrong?

Either way this is great news and what we should be aiming for.

I think we see more examples of other countries opening schools successfully at that should give us the push we need.

thetoddleratemyhomework · 10/06/2020 14:04

Yup Belgium was hit badly. And are still sending kids back to school. Which is great news in terms of seeing a whole month of data and then planning on the basis of evidence. I don't rate our government, but I think that it is totally reasonable if Gavin Williamson is currently looking at France (which is pushing for a greater return with kids in masks before schools break up) and Belgium to see whether the DFE really need to bother portable classrooms and social distancing etc.

thetoddleratemyhomework · 10/06/2020 14:05

Of course the government can't say that they are doing this because people will criticise them for not having their own plan, but why bother speculating if in a month you might actually have a better answer!!

Mascotte · 10/06/2020 14:15

It seems eminently reasonable to look at others and follow what they're doing if it looks ok.

I think I'd like Scotland to be much more trying to do that and get back full time than banging on about "blended learning" which is basically home schooling and should be a last resort .

Delatron · 10/06/2020 14:42

Well that’s brilliant news about Belgium. Especially the ditching of social distancing.

With all the other examples people moan ‘well we’re not like Denmark’ and argue we don’t have space for social distancing (which is true.

The ideal is that kids go back ASAP without social distancing.

Agree bollocks to blended learning crap!

Hopefully the evidence will increase over the next month or so to support the return.

The government are running scared since they have monumentally messed up. Our children shouldn’t suffer from their Initial inaction.

DoingMyOwnThing · 10/06/2020 14:55

Totally agree - back now without social distancing ASAP

"Duckfinger Sun 07-Jun-20 13:37:56
I'm with you OP.
I am a TA all my colleagues feel the same, the kids need to be back and back to the old normal.
Maybe we shouldn't have a assemblies, maybe we should stagger drop off/ pick up for distancing adults. Optional attendance for medicallly vulnerable but other than that business as usual as quickly as possible please. Monday morning if you want.
Other than that business as usual"

Delatron · 10/06/2020 14:58

No social distancing. Lots of hand washing and good cleaning. Testing and isolation the minute anyone has symptoms.

Community spread is so much lower now than it was when they were all in school in March!

GhostsToMonsoon · 10/06/2020 15:55

I will write to my MP - not that she has a good track record of replying to letters. Gavin Williamson is the MP for my neighbouring constituency, so there's a local connection. I spoke to my children's HT yesterday. Other than rotas, there is just no way they can reopen if they have to adhere to the social distancing requirements.

This is also worth filling in Demos report to be published this summer looking for people's experiences of Coronavirus you can fill in your views on education and what needs to happen going forward (eg preparation for second wave, minimum expectations from schools for homeschool resources/support etc.) renewnormal.co.uk

Yes, this is what we need!!!!!

I suspect that both the government and the unions are quite aware that schools being fully open with social distancing is impossible, and that they're both desperately playing for time until the end of this term; and really hoping that social distancing can be scrapped before September, at least in schools. Of course, the government are not going to say a word about possibly relaxing social distancing until the day before.

If schools are still in limbo by September, then I will go on any protest march there is, because I feel very strongly about the way children and young adults have been treated; and I'm not even a parent.

Alex50 · 11/06/2020 19:10

@wanderings 😊 thanks for the support when you don’t have children xx

Mascotte · 11/06/2020 19:14
