We need to rise up about the lack of education for our children

Please do this. Please join the Twitter movement #usforthem
Please write to your MPs
Please talk about this.

Our children are missing out on their fundamental human right of an education.

The children of regular families are suffering (all 5 of mine are suffering desperately), but those in vulnerable families are suffering even further. The gap between these children will be HUGE

I am a teacher and a mother. I am ready to go back to work full time and with the 'old normal'. I am also type 1 diabetic.

Please help us rise up to get our children educated. Our children have been totally forgotten about. Throughout my career I've had it rammed down my throat about how school is a safe place for so many children. They don't care about these children now.

I am amazed so many people have just accepted this. It has gone on for too long now.

Is there a Scottish #usforthem?

formerbabe · 09/06/2020 08:43

Facebook is full of that infuriating care symbol and people saying 'oh well, it's just not safe' 'Let's keep them off 4eva' and other such shite

It's unbearable isn't it? Brings out all the thickos with their "better safe than sorry Hun" shite. Perhaps if they had spent more time at school they'd be able to analyse statistics.

I'd send my own DC back tomorrow and I don't think even care about social distancing.

I'd definitely march for this

Eebahgumlass · 09/06/2020 08:49

@formerbabe social distancing between children in schools is being presented as a necessity. I see no evidence that it is. It is the 5th and bottom measure in the Dfe hierarchy of infection control ( subordinate to staying home when sick, hand hygiene, cleaning, respiratory hygiene) Yet it is the one that is damaging children by depriving them of their education making it impractical for schools to open. What is the additional benefit of this measure on transmission that justifies this damage on an entire generation of children?

greenstream · 09/06/2020 08:50

Listen on Radio 4 this morning, mums speaking, on BBC Sounds it's on the Today programme at about 8.10am - can listen on playback

formerbabe · 09/06/2020 08:55

There's probably never been a time in history when children have been isolated like this. Even during war times and in refugee camps, children have played together. I'm fed up with hearing that children are fine at home because they're physically safe and comfortable with plenty of technology. Right now, my ds would rather kick a ball round on a piece of wasteland with his mates than spend another day at home watching our huge telly and sitting on his laptop.

Alex50 · 09/06/2020 08:59

Look at the numbers for under 40, it’s ridiculous

We need to rise up about the lack of education for our children
Eebahgumlass · 09/06/2020 09:01

@formerbabe Agree - you cannot enforce social isolation on social creatures especially children without negative consequences.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 09/06/2020 09:03

It is absolutely tragic and heartbreaking what is happening to our kids. They need to be back at school NOW.

Coffeeandbeans · 09/06/2020 09:29

Is it to do with the unions? How powerful are they with the government? Have they threatened strikes?

WereThereAnySexualProblems · 09/06/2020 09:30

I would march too, never marched before but I am beyond furious at this. Half my daughter's class are in as their parents are key workers, it's surprising how many jobs became key when the school opened up more. I am not a key worker but I cannot work until the kids are back in school. They have been abandoned and forgotten about. They are missing the structure of a school day, their beloved friends, playparks are chained up, swimming lessons cancelled, can't visit their cousins or grandparents (all in Scotland or Wales and we are in England). But that's ok because adults can play golf and go to garden centres, no access to anything that will enrich our children's mental and physical health. Its a fucking disgrace.

Bollss · 09/06/2020 09:39

@Coffeeandbeans

Is it to do with the unions? How powerful are they with the government? Have they threatened strikes?
I feel that if they did it would go the same way as the miners strikes.
ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 09/06/2020 09:47

DD's school's remote learning provision has been so pathetically inadequate that I don't think I would notice if the teachers went on strike. The unions are damaging their members' long term interests as well as the kids.

bizzybee7771 · 09/06/2020 09:50

Please let's make noise about this. My formerly quite happy kids are moping round the house. The school home learning offer is pathetic. I'm really worried about them.

Delatron · 09/06/2020 09:51

They’re discussing on 5Live now.

At least it’s been discussed everywhere today. The pressure and momentum needs to keep going. I’d march.

ILoveMyMonkey · 09/06/2020 09:52

Found this petition online about getting all kids back to school, let's spread the word, our children deserve their education...

Joining in to say that I would march - and so would an awful lot of teenagers and children, I think. Who knows how to organise it?

Coffeeandbeans · 09/06/2020 10:12

I’ve just sent an email to my MP.

Weepinggreenwillow · 09/06/2020 10:20

Does anyone know how to organise a march? I am genuinely serious that I would march for this, would bring my teenagers too.

LockdownLou · 09/06/2020 10:21

We need a march!!

solarlightexpress · 09/06/2020 10:28

My son has done so much better since schooling took place at home.

I'm pleased with his progress and pleased he's only going back part time.

Weepinggreenwillow · 09/06/2020 10:30

solar I am genuinely pleased for you that that is your experience. Sadly it is not the experience of the majority. Of course anyone who finds home schooling a good option for their child has the choice to continue with that if they want to.
Sadly those of us who fine sending our children to school to be the best option for our children can not currently exercise a choice to do so.

TokyoSushi · 09/06/2020 10:36

The Children's Commissioner was excellent just now on Sky News, basically saying exactly as we are. There was massive investment in health with things like the Nightingales and the job sector with the furlough scheme, the same thing needs to happen now with schools to build a new and innovative way forward - and quickly!

I have just written to The Children's Commissioner, Gavin Williamson and our MP.

WhyNotMe40 · 09/06/2020 10:38

Just out of interest - are any of you worried about the long term permanent organ damage that they are increasingly finding in people who had even a mild case? It's the lung scarring that I am worried about - apparentlyi 1 in 10 show signs of fibrosis which is reversible and then deteriorates to a life limiting illness.
I think it's obvious that we have gone from a policy of herd immunity to flattening the curve and now to total suppression. Because the NHS won't be able to cope if large amounts of the population have big health needs due to long term organ damage.
Keeping social distance in schools is part of that.

WhyNotMe40 · 09/06/2020 10:40

Irreversible
