So, a minor breach. Fair enough. What happens next?

My main problem is the lying. We had BJ categorically tell us that DC did not leave the house the whole time he was in Durham. That he was not at Barnard Castle. And then we find out that not only was he at Barnard Castle, but he also left to collect his family from hospital, whilst allegedly "unable to get out of bed". Neither of these outings are big deals, but either he lied to BJ about them or BJ knew he had made the trips but lied to us. If he really feels able to stand by his actions, then why lie??? Why not just say "This happened, I'm sorry - at the time I thought it was justifiable but in hindsight it wasn't."

It shows contempt for the public. And having made such a stand I'm not sure a simple apology really cuts it for me any more. While is certainly would have in the beginning.

So did he breach the rules or the law. The rules were not enforceable u less back up by legislation which most of them were not. So if the police have said that..I'm amazed. Prob a version of Emily Maitless with her own uninformed view

Well considering the difficulties the police have had generally understanding the actual Law when assessing perceived breaches of the rules over this lockdown I'm not sure I'd take what they were saying with more than a pinch of salt either

If he had been honest on Sunday and not tried to dig himself into an even bigger hole with yet more lies, given a meaningful heart felt apology and looked even a little bit sorry I would have still been annoyed but would have tried to move on.

But things have gone to far for this now he has broken the spirit of lockdown and he really just needs to go and Boris and his cronies also need to apologise and stop defending him.

It very much matters that the police have said he breached the RULES as he said 2 days ago he didn't.

He now needs to ACTUALLY APOLOGISE and hold his hands up to breaking lockdown rules.

Personally I think he should resign.

People aren't furious with DC for breaking the lockdown, they're furious with the government reaction to it. Saying things like "End of story" "Case closed" after giving some flimsy excuse. It really treats us like idiots and implies they think they're so much better than us. If they admitted the mistake straight away and apologised everyone would have moved on by now.

For an advisor, he's certainly been badly advised.
Fess up, say sorry, nothing to argue about and it will die down.

The fact the police said “might” is neither here not there. They said they would have turned him back if they’d stopped him, and they only have power to do that if they consider there’s been a breach.

Unless they know something I don’t, I’m more surprised they said trip to Durham not a breach...

It kind of is, if the whole premise of the thread is that they said he definitely did. We always knew he 'might' have breached rules- if that's all that's been said it's not really news.

Durham Constabulary said that travelling to Durham was not in breach of the law. They said that the Barnard Castle trip was a minor breach but was so trivial that no action would have been taken beyond a request to turn around from an officer if he had been stopped. Finally they say that there is no evidence for the alleged second trip north. I can imagine that the Guardian and the Mirror will receive a rap on the knuckles from IPSO, particularly regarding the latter claim.

Frankly it is not good for the nation's media to be wasting so much newsprint on something so trivial. How many far more important issues have been overlooked in the meantime?

It's not trivial. It epitomises the sense of entitlement that continually drives the leading of this country.

Given that his reach extends to the top of the BBC, I can’t imagine Durham police will proceed with anything.

people don't like him, they think he has too much influence, whatever he has done he should apologise but it does sometimes feel that it's becoming an excuse to get rid of him and they won't be happy till he has gone
