When will dentists reopen?

Has anyone seen any information around when dentists are expected to reopen? DH is in pain, probably needs a small filling, but it sounds like his options are to wait it out or tooth extraction. Wondering how long he may need to wait it out for!

sunshinepasta You compared dentists to car showrooms, as if there’s any equivalence. I’m truly sorry you have been in pain but dental surgeries are extremely high risk. My dentist sister has colleagues who have died after contracting it at work. I have lots of compassion for his family, friends & colleagues. Also for my sister who has being working the emergency list & has on occasion had to calm her nervous colleagues, so they will assist her.

They should require a negative covid test result as a prerequisite for accessing dental procedures. Say in the last 24-48 hours.

By all means be a toothless old man / woman with receding gums if you like , you won't get any dentures to fit , and will live on soup but hey ho dentists aren't important

As a 40ish requiring full dentures, thanks for that.

Just saw this on the BBC - Jersey only but some progress:

Private dental practices in Jersey will be allowed to reopen from 1 June, the minister for Health and Social Services has said.

Deputy Richard Renouf told ministers guidance would be ready for surgeries by the end of the week.

"It is complex. We must appreciate the risks that are involved, and that's why it is necessary to put in place good, precautionary hygiene measures", he said.

"We in Jersey are leading the way here, and all credit to those involved including dentists who are working with the public health team."

Our dentist has emailed this week to say he is going to be fully open from Friday (Scotland). He has been working through the lockdown alone and on emergencies only.

@Asiama

@sunshinepasta

Can you DM me please - I started a similar thread! Desperate to see a dentist!

Thank you Smile

@QuiteGood

Unfortunately I think you have missed the finer point of my comment but that's ok. I wasn't comparing the risk, I was comparing the necessity of reopening those two different things. But I am am glad that you have come back and justified your comments in way that feels more comfortable to you.

@QuiteGood how do they know they contracted it at work? There is absolutely no way they can prove that.

Chrisinthemorning · 28/05/2020 18:31

Answer- 8th June with less than 2 weeks notice to prepare.
Fantastic Angry
Thank you DS for keeping me at home!

Great news. Much needed. Dread to think of what we will be going back to but so essential. Finally we have an answer!

Asiama · 29/05/2020 09:43

Yes great news for patients like us although I understand the frustration that dentists would feel.

DH managed to see a private dentist today. It cost a bomb but better than being in pain. He will need to go back for further treatment but will wait for our dentist to open. Even if our dentist opens on 8 June I wonder how big the backlog will be and when we can realistically get an appointment.

I feel awful for people who do not have the means to go private and have to suffer until the NHS dentists start up again. It really isn't fair.

My OH is delighted to actually be able to start earning again but they can't do anything til the practice receives it's delivery of PPE which should have been here last week! he is mostly private but has been doing phone consults and prescribing as allowed. He's had loads of calls from elderly patients who can't understand why he isn't allowed to see them - one lady phoned him 3 times on Monday after forgetting she had phoned on Friday. So sad.

no idea when he will be able to resume any of the domiciliary home visits he does (and doesn't get paid for) to those who can't get to the surgery any more. These visits are so important to the patient but will have to go by the wayside for the foreseeable future. Sad

Phoned my dentist and they've booked me for 22nd. But also said to keep ringing them to see if I can get in earlier. One thing they pointed out was that they didn't know when the dental labs would be up and running and on what sort of basis. Which, is of course important for crowns, dentures, implants etc. But I'm delighted to have an appointment!!
