When will dentists reopen?

Asiama · 24/05/2020 09:30

Has anyone seen any information around when dentists are expected to reopen? DH is in pain, probably needs a small filling, but it sounds like his options are to wait it out or tooth extraction. Wondering how long he may need to wait it out for!

@Asiama do you have to be on the desktop for private message? I can only use the app

Troels · 26/05/2020 19:49

We aren't due normal visits till September so hope it's all good then. But Teen Dd was due her braces off the week of lockdown. So dissapointed at having to keep them till god knows when. At least theres no pain, like some oof the others having a hard time. Hope they open soon, they are very essential.

Asiama · 26/05/2020 19:54

@GenerateUsername yes it's shocking I don't understand how other countries manage it and we can't.

@sunshinepasta I don't think you can receive messages on the app. You would need to log into Mumsnet using a browser eg on your phone. Is that a possibility?

@Troels hope your daughter gets her braces off soon! I can imagine how frustrating that must be for a teen!

I was told in January they'd reassess at the start of June (I see a dentist at the hospital), received a phone call today delaying until start of September. I want my dentures :(

sunshinepasta · 26/05/2020 20:00

@Asiama sorry I have seen it and responded now

Asiama · 26/05/2020 20:42

@sunshinepasta thank you so much!!!! It's actually within an hour's driving distance from us so we will ring them tomorrow. I'll update how we get on.

@SimplySteveRedux I'm so sorry to hear about your dentures. That must impact your quality of life. Are you able to eat?

sunshinepasta · 26/05/2020 20:48

@Asiama good luck. Don't call them at 11 haha, I'll be in there

SimplySteveRedux · 26/05/2020 20:51

@Asiama

I have a temporary partial top denture so as long as I'm not too adventurous I can manage ok :) Massive confidence boost from having no teeth and making sure never to smile to boom instant ego boost. Thanks for asking Smile

ImNotProfSaraHurley · 26/05/2020 21:06

Not for a while. NHS practices are being paid their contract value. Good luck!

apples24 · 26/05/2020 21:26

The UK stance with this is really extreme. :(

They never closed in Finland where I'm originally from. No negative news at all about dentists picking up covid from patients or dentists being hotspots for spreading the virus.

Rainbowgravy · 26/05/2020 23:12

I have a provisional appointment to have 3 teeth removed under sedation ( impacted wisdom tooth, next, and another one which is on my palate which is broken) in July and I'm praying it goes ahead. It is taking place in a specialist centre. Everything crossed.

GenerateUsername · 27/05/2020 06:51

I agree. If I’m honest I think they’re going to end up doing more harm than good in the long run.

TheAlphaandtheOmega · 27/05/2020 07:01

I’m another one who is wanting a new partial denture at the bottom, my temporary one does not fit at all well now after I had another extraction, I had planned a new denture at Eastertime and am now managing with just 2 bottom teeth as I just leave the temporary one out now as it is so wobbly. Does denture fitting create a lot of aerosols as it just seems to be mainly making casts and fitting but involves several appointments which will be scarce when they open.

Talulahoopla · 27/05/2020 07:19

Press today saying 15th July but not for everything. Will be for issues/pain etc come up during lockdown. Hopefully not long to wait.

Talulahoopla · 27/05/2020 07:20

*June, not July. Apologies. Hopefully it's true. Waiting very impatiently.
Chrisinthemorning · 27/05/2020 07:37

I love that the Daily Mail is reporting that we’re open on 15th June but no one has told the profession Angry
It sounds as though it will only be for non aerosol generating emergencies so basically extractions, sticking cement on and recementing crowns.
Then there will be phases where more is allowed. This has already been announced in Scotland.
I have a year 3 child who breaks up for 9 weeks in July and my parents are over 70 so I won’t be back until September.

Asiama · 27/05/2020 09:51

I'm sorry for all of you who have posted about your problems with your teeth. I really really hope that you won't have to suffer for much longer. And for the dentists, I hope you get clarity really soon from the official channels and not Daily Mail! I can only imagine how worried you must be about your income and I expect it's frustrating not to be able to help.

We managed to get an appt today with a dentist for Friday, I think it's private but right now I'm so happy that it means we don't have to fly to Germany and all the risks that come with this. We couldn't get through to @sunshinepasta 's dentist but the one we found is much closer, so it's worked out. If it wasn't for your encouraging story though we wouldn't have continued looking for a dentist, so thank you!

How sad is it that my standards and expectations have become so low that I'm happy over a private appointment, when it's a matter of course in other countries that their national system would treat you Sad

sunshinepasta · 27/05/2020 10:01

@Asiama glad you are sorted and hope all goes well for your husband on Friday.

I totally share your view, it's astonishing that so many people on here have begged for advice for dentists. I feel totally let down by the system and I cannot begin to describe the mental distress this has caused me over the last several weeks, just appalling. I have found the whole think traumatising and the fear I have felt over uncontrolled pain and infection without being able to see anyone will stay with me forever.

I do understand the risks, however to have confirmed that a car showroom can open on 1st June and still no confirmed date for dentists is staggering.

QuiteGood · 27/05/2020 10:08

Do car showrooms routinely use aerosolising equipment?

sunshinepasta · 27/05/2020 10:09

Little bit unecessary. Take it you haven't been in pain and had four unsuccessful courses of antibiotics in the last 6 weeks. I said I knew the risks. Doesn't detract from the experience that I and many others have had.

sunshinepasta · 27/05/2020 10:11

@QuiteGood

Quite good at what? Compassion? No....

bigchris · 27/05/2020 10:16

dentists aren't important Shock

Oh yes they are !

They stop gum disease in its tracks

They spot mouth cancer

By all means be a toothless old man / woman with receding gums if you like , you won't get any dentures to fit , and will live on soup but hey ho dentists aren't important

GabriellaMontez · 27/05/2020 11:15

Glad you've got one OP. Mine isn't allowed to open but tells me more private dentists are now open.

Totally agree this should have been addressed as an absolute priority. Long before car showrooms were discussed.

B1rdbra1n · 27/05/2020 11:28

I don't know how anyone can think that dentists are not important😲
without modern dentistry civilization is hardly possible 😲
Dentistry is absolutely fundamental!!!

GabriellaMontez · 27/05/2020 11:32

I think hope it was sarcastic
