If vaccine what would be order list of distribution

In terms of people what would think think maybe the roll out eligibility order?
Do you think people in the vulnerable but not critically vulnerable would be on the list to receive ?

This is just a guess, but I think it would be frontline key workers first (doctors, nurses, carers, police etc.) followed by the most vulnerable and then people in care homes and other residential settings.

Pregnant women are classes as vulnerable- it would be interesting to see whether additional testing is required to make it available to them.

I think it would go by risk, so first frontline key workers, then care home residents, then other workers and children, and anyone shielding or self isolating at home will be last on the list.

The immunosuppressed often have a suboptimal response to vaccines, as do the elderly which is why the flu vaccine was adjusted for the over 65's a couple of years ago. I wonder whether the reduced efficacy in this age group would influence the prioritising to whom it's given.

It’ll probably be the same as the way they did the swine flu shot- so the shielded and vulnerable, the healthcare workers, first.

I know nothing, but I guess it might be influenced by how long it takes to be effective. I can't imagine that you have a shot and voila you're immune, it could take weeks or months of several shots to be effective. If so, it might de-prioritise pregnant women for example, or those who require imminent operations, or even some who are shielding as one dose may make them worse.
Usually a new vaccine would have years of rigorous testing to iron all of this out. In the case of a covid vaccine I don't believe that the world will wait.

Thank you. I have fairly bad asthma so vulnerable but not shielded. I am also a carer for my disabled son and have two other children. I feel guilty that because of me we will keep them off preschool etc so hence wondering.

With swine flu they prioritised Primary care and NHS so they could look after everyone else.

They have just addressed this on Horizon on BBC2.
NHS and care staff then vulnerable including care home but not if its a life vaccine. If its live it will have to be care workers and those who don't have a compromised immune system

@MereDintofPandiculation out of interest why do you think those who are shielding would be last, given that those are a high risk group? Not all who are in the shielding group don't work!

I think retail workers should be added in with key workers too

NHS, care workers first. Next on my list would be emergency services. Then food chain workers (everyone seems to remember supermarket staff but forget farmers and food haulage workers). Finally all other “key workers” from the government list before general population.

Personally, I wouldn’t choose to give it to vulnerable people first because it will not have been tested to the same extent as vaccines normally are. “Fast tracked” means “we need to skip a few steps” and that makes me nervous, though I’m normally hugely pro-vaccine.

Assuming it's suitable/safe for each group I'd like to think...

Vulnerable (yes, even us diabetic scum)
Over 50's

No one who has uttered the words 'it's only a cold' or 'Hiding at home/pathetic/something scathing about people who have been scared'

Who makes the decision PHE? The Govt? Other??

I would think it would be

Shielded
NHS / carers
Care home residents
Other vulnerable (the flu jab list)
Everyone else

However I guess it depends on the vaccine trials. If they decide that the vaccine doesn't work as well in older people, or is risky for certain people in the shielded group. If so they might have to try to create herd immunity by giving it to the fit and healthy people.

I read that it would make more sense to give it to the carers/household members of the shielded rather than the shielded themselves as many of these people have immunocompromised issues that could make the vaccine ineffective for them.

I think it'll be

Emergency services/HCPs (possibly their household members)
Care home workers
Children
Carers

I don’t think anything is ever ‘tested’ as such for pregnancy as it’s unethical in case something goes wrong so they have to make sure it’s safe for the general population then weigh up benefit v risk

Depends on how effective the kids are at spreading it, really. If they are capable of passing it on, then vaccinating the kids protects the adults and other children they come into contact with who for one reason or another cannot be vaccinated.

On Horizon last night they seemed to suggest that the most vulnerable would get it first. The reason being there will be risks involved in a rushed through vaccine, so start with the ones where the risk of not having it outweigh the risk of having it. Made them sound a bit like guinea pigs to me.

My fear all along has been that the shielded group (my husband is in it) will be the first, and almost used as guinea pigs before it is released to others. In recent weeks I have found some of the actions and language used about the shielded group has made me feel they are second class citizens (and therefore expendable). The perception of the shielded group in some media outlets is that they are all ancient and very disabled - when actually in my husband's case, and thousands of other, that is not the case at all. So I am truly frightened by the direction things seem to be headed in.

Too far down the line to speculate I'd have thought. Presumably, like flu, there would not be a benefit vs cost of delivering vaccine to all, when healthy young people have very little risk of severe illness. Health and social care workers would obviously be first due to their impact on the R rate.

MashedPotatoBrainz - cross posted but yes I agree with you. I also feel that during these tragic times the loss of life of someone in the shielded group will not be deemed as serious/upsetting as those not being shielded. So guinea pigs for sure!

I wouldn’t want to be one of the first to take it and why risk children taking it when the virus is of such little risk to them.

I am appalled by the suggestions on this thread but not surprised as the loony liberal press blames the govt for the difference in our death rate v Germany and ignores the very obvious ethnic differences.

It is known that covid affects BAME people disproportionately so it is them who should be prioritised if a vaccine becomes available. A black 28 year old pregnant nurse died not because she was a nurse, because she wasn't at work, she died because she was black. Yes I am ageist but this life mattered more to me than the loss of a terminally ill 94 year old with 6 months to live.
