Self-Employed HMRC update

Snorkelface · 05/05/2020 10:50

HMRC has added a few updates for the self employed grant scheme.

www.gov.uk/guidance/claim-a-grant-through-the-coronavirus-covid-19-self-employment-income-support-scheme

While HMRC will be contacting eligible claimants directly over the next couple of weeks with more specific details you can now see if you're eligible to claim and what date you'll be able to lodge your claim by using their on-line tool (about half way down their web page).

You'll need your UTR and NI number to do this and it will also give you the opportunity to set up your Gateway account if you don't already have one and to update your contact details. It's a good idea to set this up now as the website is likely to get very busy when it goes live on 13th May.

You can find both your UTR and NI number on your tax return. If you're setting up your Gateway at the same time you'll need to provide email/mobile details and you'll need to set up additional security measures to identify you using either security questions or drivers license details or your passport. The system can time out so it's a good idea to have all the details to hand.

Just to say I also needed my phone handy to receive the Govt Gateway one-time access code, for signing in.

ListeningQuietly · 14/05/2020 17:25

NB
as per a conversation with a client today
the Grant Funding counts as 20/21 income
NOT 19/20

Jellykat · 14/05/2020 17:32

All well here, i was poised ready at 8.00 a.m, and will receive exactly what i'd calculated.. phew!
So so glad i'd sorted out the gateway problem beforehand, or i would've had a right meltdown.

IFancyANamechange · 14/05/2020 17:44

DH did his earlier. Had to call up as there was an issue with the Gateway account. He was on the phone for about 45 mins all in all. Got exactly what we calculated it to be.

Very happy and relieved!

Bimbleberries · 14/05/2020 17:46

Is that must be counted as 20/21 income? Or is it that it can be counted as 20/21, but could instead be counted as partly 19/20, partly 20/21, if you wanted and normally pay tax at the time you earn rather than when you are paid?

Snorkelface · 14/05/2020 17:59

Excellent news all those who got their claims sorted today. I'm relieved to have my claim in too.

Any random problems, questions, extra info etc please keep posting it here. There's still four more days of people putting their claims in, it's all useful.

Bimbleberries Must be counted as 20/21 income.
Makes sense if you think lockdown started 23rd March, just over a week before start of the new financial year..

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 14/05/2020 19:06

Ours is in. All good. Just remaining unconvinced its being extended 🙄

Vegena · 14/05/2020 19:07

I hope you are wrong re extension! Sad

JamieLeeCurtains · 14/05/2020 19:14

If it's extended I suspect it will be in line with the furlough scheme, ie after July it'll be halved (as per govt talking about employers 'sharing' the cost of furlough).

And that's being optimistic.

ListeningQuietly · 14/05/2020 20:07

I have no faith at all that it will be extended
and I have clients VERY worried that the second tranche (if there is one)
will only be open to recipients of the first

if HMRC try to pull that one, I and every other CCAB accountant in the country will have their guts for garters

MondeoFan · 14/05/2020 20:10

Registered for gateway account and have the number for it. Tomorrow is the date to apply. Will they send an email by tomorrow or tonight? If they don't where do I apply for the funding?

CryHavoc · 14/05/2020 20:15

Just google 'self employed grant' and the link comes up. My slot was 8am this morning, I logged on at 7.45 and was done in five minutes. Good luck to everyone still waiting to apply.

MondeoFan · 14/05/2020 20:22

Thank you

Snorkelface · 14/05/2020 20:31

If you have your date and time to claim you don't need to wait for any further communication from HMRC even if they say they're sending you an email.

In your allocated time slot you can use this link - just scroll down to the big Start Now button.

Got my grant and got what I worked out I would get. I had just started an 8 hr job to top up my self employed 3 weeks prior to lockdown and wondered if I should get it as I've been furloghed but did, my wage was less in 2018/2019 as I had just started. I already put my self assessment through for this year. I'm guessing indeclare the grant in the 20/21 financial year as that's when I recieved it.

PilatesPeach · 14/05/2020 20:52

Martin Lewis on ITV a moment ago spoke to Treasury about the SE scheme which is paying out now for the March/April/May period ie almost over. His words were that it is "50/50" as to whether SE will get another grant - it is not certain that they will get another 80% until end of October like employees. I am not entirely sure why the SE should end up worse off. Many are self-employed because of the particular job they do where employment is not an option and might be earning a small amount. Alot of non-SE seem to equate SE with earning substantial amounts with little tax paid.

MondeoFan · 14/05/2020 20:54

@snorkelface thank you, yes slot is 8am 👍🏻

kwest · 14/05/2020 21:04

DH has not received anything as new self employed. After 44 years on PAYE too, never claimed anything. Disgusted.

Jellykat · 14/05/2020 21:23

So sorry to hear that kwest, what a wind up to say the least!

Snorkelface · 15/05/2020 00:49

@kwest - there's so many holes in this system, I'm so sorry you're in this position. Is your DH able to tap in to any of the loan schemes at all, not ideal or the same thing at all but there nonetheless.

GeraltOfRivia · 15/05/2020 07:46

I've been on and sorted. It went through straight away.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 15/05/2020 07:48

I did mine this morning, was about a grand more than I was expecting so I’m happy!

Dontrainonmyparade · 15/05/2020 08:17

All done in under 5 minutes. Received what I expected to.

MsWoolf · 15/05/2020 08:25

I did mine this morning at 7.45. All very smooth. I do wonder whether the money will really come in within 6 days though or whether the scheme will struggle to cope...
