Self-Employed HMRC update

Snorkelface · 05/05/2020 10:50

HMRC has added a few updates for the self employed grant scheme.

www.gov.uk/guidance/claim-a-grant-through-the-coronavirus-covid-19-self-employment-income-support-scheme

While HMRC will be contacting eligible claimants directly over the next couple of weeks with more specific details you can now see if you're eligible to claim and what date you'll be able to lodge your claim by using their on-line tool (about half way down their web page).

You'll need your UTR and NI number to do this and it will also give you the opportunity to set up your Gateway account if you don't already have one and to update your contact details. It's a good idea to set this up now as the website is likely to get very busy when it goes live on 13th May.

You can find both your UTR and NI number on your tax return. If you're setting up your Gateway at the same time you'll need to provide email/mobile details and you'll need to set up additional security measures to identify you using either security questions or drivers license details or your passport. The system can time out so it's a good idea to have all the details to hand.

I went on at 7:45 aswell and did it. Money was a little bit less than I thought. But I know it was averaged out over 3 years

whatnametopick · 15/05/2020 08:31

Done DH this morning in less than 5 minutes, grant was what we expected
I'm hoping it's extended as I'm shielded and DH job involves a lot of work in people's homes.

Bimbleboo · 15/05/2020 08:41

@MsWoolf I thought the same. My application went in two days before yours so il report back as soon as it is paid in (if it is) so that you’ll know if it’s gone smoothly for someone xx

userxx · 15/05/2020 08:44

@MsWoolf The furlough payments hit within 6 days as promised so I think this will too.

MsWoolf · 15/05/2020 08:45

@Bimbleboo Thank you!

SmileyClare · 15/05/2020 08:54

Useful thread Op. Following.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/05/2020 08:56

I was hoping to wake up to a payment today as I got my application through at 8am Wednesday- but nothing yet

TitsalinaBumSquash · 15/05/2020 08:58

I'm allowed to apply on the 16th.

This is a huge relief for me because we're having to shield I haven't worked at all in the last 2 months. Usually I earn a small amount a month (usually 1-1.2k) but we're really noticing it.
I'm glad they've made it fairly idiot proof, I'm already confused with my last years tax!

userxx · 15/05/2020 08:59

@LaurieFairyCake The payments are taking 6 days.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 15/05/2020 09:08

It also told you when you submitted that it took 6 working days.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/05/2020 09:18

It said within 6 days, not 6 days exactly Grin

LoseLooseLucy · 15/05/2020 09:48

Just done mine, was surprisingly easy.

ToodleTweedle · 15/05/2020 09:57

If I'm in a partnership do we have to apply separately does anyone know?

IntermittentParps · 15/05/2020 10:06

ToodleTweedle, my DP is in a partnership and yes, they're applying separately.
He did his this morning and reports that it was straightforward and quick. And he's getting a bit more than he'd calculated, so yay!

ToodleTweedle · 15/05/2020 10:10

Perfect thank you! Just wasn't sure if it was 1 application covers both of them.

We're applying this morning so fingers crossed!

magicmallow · 15/05/2020 10:18

I know a lot of people are on Universal Credit but is anyone here on Housing Benefit and Tax Credits and thinking of, or applied already?
Do you know how it affects these benefits? I understand it doesn't affect UC already paid in this tax year but may affect future payments. I am wondering that if I get a lump sum (because i have lost work just not 80%) it will take me over and I will be liable to repay housing benefit already paid since my last review?

Snorkelface · 15/05/2020 10:42

Glad people are managing to get their claims in and seeing roughly the figures they were expecting.

On a slightly different note there's a a live broadcast today at 2.30pm on the BBC (Parliament channel/iPlayer) of the Economic Impact of Corona Virus Committee, which is a government group within the Treasury

This committee covers the self-employed, bounce back loans, furlough scheme etc amongst other things. It's more of a discussion meeting covering a few topics than one of big announcements but it can be very relevant. I'm not sure what they'll be covering today in the meeting.

Before the meetings there's a call for evidence from individuals and organisations about the areas up for discussion. There's currently a call for evidence for an inquiry into the effectiveness of the schemes including the self-employed. Submissions need to be in before 27 May and can be made on-line.

So If you want to say something directly to the government and in longer form than a tweet or MN message regarding the impact the current decisions have made on your life and business have a look. Here's a link to the call for evidence and there's a loads of stuff to read about the previous meetings/letters/evidence etc.

committees.parliament.uk/work/224/economic-impact-of-coronavirus/

Hopefully there'll be some positive news about an extension before then but if not and for all those who have been left out so far it's a least a chance to be heard.

I had worked out my grant to be : 4331

Based on

27278
19174
18517

But I received 3642

Maybe my maths isn't as strong as I thought Confused

Snorkelface · 15/05/2020 12:28

Hey Vegena - did you have a look at their calculations to see what they'd based that figure on?

OP posts:
GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 15/05/2020 12:31

There was a breakdown on the page too, did it tally with yours?

Vegena · 15/05/2020 12:31

Thank you - I will check. I got a bit excited/nervous so powered through

userxx · 15/05/2020 12:43

It said within 6 days, not 6 days exactly

It said the same for furlough payments and they took six days exactly :)

userxx · 15/05/2020 12:45

@Vegena Based on those figures you are correct - check the breakdown.

Vegena · 15/05/2020 12:55

I just went back online to check my tax returns. They amounts they have used to calculate my grant are less than what is stated on the three tax returns in my self assessment.

What is more odd is the same has happened for my husband.

Eg online it says 18/19 for him was 38000 whilst they have used his calculation that year to be 16382

Vegena · 15/05/2020 12:55

Okay please ignore me - I have just figured it out
