So today they announced we are past the peak, the R value is between 0.6-0.9 and they will announce next steps next week.
What do people think they will be? Boris sounded quite optimistic but then Chirs Whitty sounds much more somber.
What do you think we can expect?

I have no idea what the solution is. Saving lives and the NHS is entirely valid. But then on the other hand, millions on the scrap heap, there won’t be enough new jobs, homes repossessed both rental and mortgage, universal credit and benefits going through the roof.
If millions of people lose their job who will pay all the benefits to get them food, a home? Who will pay for policeman and the NHS? Will people be laying in the gutters?
What about Sweden’s approach, were they wrong??

Then we have Boris telling us we will get through this. Boris, a wealthy man from a wealthy family.
Rishi Sunak is a multimillionaire and I think his father in law is a billionaire.
In any case Boris will be on PM wages for the rest of his life so he has nothing financially to worry about does he?

Peppafrig · 02/05/2020 13:57

The labour leader is a multi millionaire too as was Jeremy Corbin .

JediJim · 02/05/2020 14:06

Indeed Peppafrig, I just don’t really need rich middle class people telling me how we will be ok when they won’t have to suffer any hardship themselves.
That goes for all of them.

They can't loosen things too much before half term, otherwise half the country will push off on holiday (UK based).

Titsywoo · 02/05/2020 14:27

Is it even going to be worth it for many restaurants and bars to open with those sort of restrictions I wonder? All their staff off furlough and paying higher costs than if they were closed - I assume many will be working at a loss!

The dentist thing (and orthodonist) is a bloody nightmare.

JediJim · 02/05/2020 14:34

Pubs and restaurants can’t really operate with social distancing. They would be better off being closed and furloughing the staff.

SodaSloth · 02/05/2020 15:12

I think 3 more weeks of lockdown then easing of lockdown to see if there's a spike of cases, no idea who or how. Whatever is decided can you imagine the pressure Government is under.. If we come out of lockdown too quickly and reopen school, pubs, shops etc at once and the second Covid spike is deadlier than the first. Imagine that on your conscience forever

vanillandhoney · 02/05/2020 15:15

I don't think anything will change next week, and he's never said they will. He's said they'll outline a plan next week but as of yet, they haven't decided on a date.

Most of Europe is still in lockdown and we didn't lockdown for a good 2-3 weeks after they did. Why would our lockdown end before theirs does?

Starmer is self made, not born into wealth. He went to Grammar school. His mum was a nurse and his dad a toolmaker.
