What measures next week?

So today they announced we are past the peak, the R value is between 0.6-0.9 and they will announce next steps next week.
What do people think they will be? Boris sounded quite optimistic but then Chirs Whitty sounds much more somber.
What do you think we can expect?

@pennylane83 cant see how they'll enforce those of us getting public transport to wear scarves and boil wash them Grin

Secondary school kids get buses too don't forget

Jenasaurus · 30/04/2020 20:50

If I had to speculate and guess I would say the easing will be something along these lines

In June after half term nurseries will reopen with outdoor activities to ensure less contact in an enclosed area.

The next stage will be the schools for the crucial year groups returning, possibly part time to enable smaller class sizes and social distancing

Face masks will be required and provided for passengers on the Tube and busses, and a staggering of start and end times to the working day to ensure they are not packed. A policy on leaving 2 seats empty to every 1 seat to again ensure social distancing

Shops will open with a rule on how many can enter at one time, similar to the way supermarkets work now

Workers will return to work if they are able to socially distance but those who can continue working from home should continue to do so

You will be allowed to meet friends and family but adhere to the social distancing rule and meet outside of the home if possible in a park or garden.

Pub beer gardens will open, but no one will be allowed inside, or a restriction on the numbers allowed inside,

Restaurants and coffee shops can open if they have outside space or for takeaways.

People will be allowed to take domestic holidays in this country.

Gyms, Sport centres will open for solo activies like swimming and weights, and where distancing is possible, such as badminton and Tennis. but no use of communal changing areas, unless restricted in numbers to do so.

Weddings if outside will be allowed to have guests of up to 30 but not if an indoor setting unless spaced out in a church, registery office in family groups that live together.

Testing of temperatures will be taken at the entrance to work settings, shops and other venues.

Sporting and other events will only be allowed to fill the venues to a 3rd of the capacity to ensure people have 2 seats between everyone, although if in a family group that live together you will be able to sit next to each other.

Those that have had the virus and recovered will be provided with a certificate to show and be given more freedom than those who havent had it.

Hairdressers/beauticians etc will be one of the last to open as there is a lot of contact, when they do, it will be with masks and gloves on the hairdresser/beautician and the person receiving the treatment.

People will be encouraged to walk to work if they can to avoid public transport.

There, thats a guess of what may or may not be said.

MrsWhites · 30/04/2020 22:04

I’d be surprised if we are given any time scale, just an American style phase 1 will include, phase 2 will then include and so on. It’s basically just to keep people sweet whilst they announce lockdown will continue for another 3 weeks!

LabStaff · 01/05/2020 06:38

Yes, I agree MrsWhites - Boris Johnson used the phrase 'Phase 1' several times during the press conference yesterday. Any changes will have to be introduced slowly and in a stepwise manner, so that we can see the effect that they have on R, hospital admissions, and deaths.

Bluntness100 · 01/05/2020 06:46

I also think there will be a slight loosening next week. With a plan for subsequent loosening on given dates.

Clearly he has got disagreement on the plan, either from opposition or sturgeon. As he said he would try to build consensus, but She can do what she pleases with Scotland though and may go a different route.

I think the economy is now being slaughtered, people are getting impatient, shops and businesses are starting to reopen, because it’s been nearly two months and they need to, and the government needs to do something.

A wholesale we are extending this level of lock down for x weeks will not be well received by the British public, no matter how many folks are loving being at home.

RingtheBells · 01/05/2020 06:52

A few more shops opening, maybe garden centres. Workplaces maybe working more on a shift system and weekend opening to spread people out more, my workplace does this now. Being allowed to sit down when out as long as distancing.

alittlecloudfloatinginthesky · 01/05/2020 07:58

I'm hoping that they at least announce that people who live on their own can select a household that they are allowed to visit.
I know a few rule-abiding people who live on their own and are really struggling, and it is concerning.

RingtheBells · 01/05/2020 08:04

Jenrick was just on BBC Breakfast saying that councils had been encouraged to open tips, and it was perfectly reasonable to make a journey to the tip and many should be open within a couple of weeks. Hurrah!

Blobby10 · 01/05/2020 08:07

alittlecloudfloatinginthesky same here. Haven't seen my OH for 6 weeks and whilst I'm lucky cos I've got my kids back home and am still working, he is on his own and getting really depressed. He hasn't got any income either until at least July so desperately worried about that too.

Peppafrig · 01/05/2020 08:09

Can u see people of Scotland staying in lockdown while the rest of UK isn't ? I can't see people happy with that especially as many of us pass over the border to work .

ragged · 01/05/2020 08:11

It will be face coverings (cloth) not surgical masks. Recommended not mandated I suspect.

The trains & buses are the most empty places you can find right now where I live. Typical 1 passenger for every 60 seats.

I don't want to be forced to wear a face covering for 10 hrs/day so will probably carry on at home, so no commuting anyway. DH does the shopping. So face covering would rarely be worn by me.

I HOPE they say we can have limited leisure/social contact with some regular friends & family: like a short list of up to 10 people. There's only one person I really want to see (a friend). DH would like to see his elderly mum.

And re open places like hairdressers, but I most need a dentist.

Peppafrig · 01/05/2020 08:13

Ragged I'm with you on the dentist thing. I can't imagine what the waitlist will be like when they do open . Ours is already a 4 week wait with the backlog it will take months to get seen.

MummaGiles · 01/05/2020 08:26

Spain has announced its phased plan to come out of lockdown (theirs having been much more restrictive than ours in the first place). The country is quasi-federal so the timings of when they transition between phases will likely vary between regions but each phase is to last a minimum of 2 weeks due to the incubation period.

Preparatory Phase 0 (4-11 May)

Hairdressers and other businesses that offer service by appointment can reopen.
Restaurants can offer take-away services.
Professional sports leagues will go back to training.
Short walks and individual sporting activities allowed starting on 2 May.

Phase 1 (about two weeks from 11 May)

All provinces that meet the requirements will move to phase 1 on 11 May, except for three islands in the Canaries archipelago - La Gomera, El Hierro and La Graciosa - and the Balearic island of Formentera, where phase 1 begins on 4 May as an exception.
Small businesses to reopen under strict safety conditions.
Bars and restaurants can reopen their terraces with no more than 30% occupation.
Hotels and other tourist accommodation can reopen, excluding common areas.
Shops and other service providers must set aside preferential times for customers aged over 65 to visit.
Places of worship will also be reopened, limiting the capacity to one third.

Phase 2 (about two weeks from late May)

Theatres and cinemas to reopen, filling no more than a third of their capacity.
Cultural centres such as art galleries and museums will reopen, again operating only at a third of regular capacity.
Places of worship will increase their capacity to 50%.
Hunting and sport-fishing will be allowed.
Some schools will reopen, though most will stay closed until September.

Phase 3 (around the end of June)

Shops will be allowed to open at half capacity with distancing of two meters between clients.
Restrictions on restaurants and bars will be further loosened.
Opening of beaches.

Seelowbrown · 01/05/2020 09:12

I’m expecting a lot of Boris bluster about more businesses opening up and some people slowly returning to work but the end result will be nothing has changed significantly for a further 3 weeks. He may give some aspirational targets like schools to be back in some form by June and the ability to see family. A bit of hope perhaps amongst the gloom

googlepoodle · 01/05/2020 10:56

@MummaGiles was there any mention of when office workers go back?

OP posts:
MummaGiles · 01/05/2020 11:04

That ain’t clear

MummaGiles · 01/05/2020 11:04

Ain’t?? Isn’t!

Blobby10 · 01/05/2020 11:19

@Peppafrig dentists wont be opening for weeks. My OH is one and spitting feathers at the total lack of information and guidance come from British Dental Association and Public Health England other than "dont pick up a tool until at least July".

IF they can get the correct PPE to protect themselves when doing aerosol procedures ie fillings, cleaning, implants etc they will have to deep clean the surgery after every patient so only able to see under half the number they do now. They had already started asking patients the COVID questions but suspected that some lied - how much risk is it fair that a dentist/hygienist/nurse puts themselves in? My OH is feeling so frustrated and feels so sorry for the patients who ring him when he's on call and all he can do is prescribe painkillers or antibiotics. Theres finally a "nearby" urgent care hub which he can now send urgent cases to but some patients would have to travel 70 miles each way for that!

namechangenumber2 · 01/05/2020 11:28

I think it'll be taken very slow, with a plan to open shops ( but with social distancing in place), certain school years back to school after half term and maybe allowing friends/family to meet up in small groups ( whilst also socially distancing? I'm not so sure about that last one.

Thighmageddon · 01/05/2020 11:37

I think it will be a further lock down because we really can't start to lift it with an R of 0.9.

They will set out some very loose plans about the exit strategy and will maybe review lockdown on a weekly basis.

We are X weeks behind Italy and Spain with worse figures so I don't understand the clamouring of wanting to get back into shops.

MadisonAvenue · 01/05/2020 11:39

Jenasaurus re your speculation about sporting events. To ensure social distancing they’d also need to leave entire rows empty. We go to football matches and it’s usual to have the knees of the person in the row behind you touching your back.

namechangenumber2 · 01/05/2020 12:27

@Thighmageddon , I agree, I also suspect they'll review weekly now

MummaGiles · 01/05/2020 13:53

@googlepoodle I’ve had more of a read now. Remote working where possible until the end of the final stage as far as I can see.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 01/05/2020 13:56

I am so over all this shite.

Jenasaurus · 02/05/2020 13:35

I hear that there is an umbrella policy for hairdressers to reopen.
