Wetherspoons to open in June?

As you can see from my user name I love a drink, but pubs open that early? I was expecting much later and on twitter there's a very vocal industry leader who thinks all pubs by July 1st. I know our numbers are coming down but what will pubs opening do to increase that as we all forget social distancing after a few. Maybe it'll be table service only and very spaced out

There was a news item on sky about a Spanish bar owner. Came back to a pile of bills when he opened up his place and is now thinking , is it worth it? Was very sad.
The weather spoons guy might be luckier , but many other places won't be.
: (

My DH works for a brewery. Lots of staff have been furloughed. he is still working as he deals with accounts but they are not expecting pubs to be open before the end of the summer. He is working on the basis that pubs will be one of the last things to open.

Connie222 · 29/04/2020 19:51

Christ, that man is an insufferable twat.

teqcar · 29/04/2020 19:51

For god's sake give low paid young people something they enjoy.

WTF Hmm

ladygracie · 29/04/2020 19:53

I am with those who won’t be going there again no matter when they open.

teqcar · 29/04/2020 19:54

I couldn't give a rat's arse about ethics or solidarity or fucking principles. I just want to see people. Actual, real live, breathing fucking fellow humans to talk to.

I'm sure there will be plenty like you as well Sad

Nonnymum · 29/04/2020 19:57

I would be surprised if they open in June¡. But it won't matter to me I wouldn't go even if it was the only pub in the UK

dottiedodah · 29/04/2020 19:58

I cant see it happening TBH. There would have to be table service only and even then how is going to the loo going to be safe ?Wishful thinking on the owners part I think!

BilboBercow · 29/04/2020 19:58

I don't know any young people who enjoy Wetherspoons. Where I come from it's strictly pensioners and really rough men.

cheninblanc · 29/04/2020 20:05

I was shocked to read it tbh. I'd assumed pubs would be the last bit I guess if he goes via the food theme (can't call it a restaurant) then uses the app to pay and order and spaced tables he could in theory meet some guidelines?

I do get the hate for the owner of spoons but he still employs people and people need jobs.
It's a dilemma , but they are cheap and spacious and people like going there.
Not everyone scan afford a bistro type pub and don't want blaring music or live singers or whatever. I don't go in them, but I think the places will be rammed when it does open! If it keeps the economy going that's also a good thing to pay for the nhs and so on. People say they will boycott but probably won't (including my own ' woke' son!!)

You don't understand it based on that statement.

Mine does and his friends all go there

Letseatgrandma · 29/04/2020 20:18

I don't know any young people who enjoy Wetherspoons

Ours are full of teens and students-it’s about the only place they can afford to drink in.

LangClegsInSpace · 29/04/2020 20:20

Yes, why not? The 70 somethings don't go there.

They bloody well do. Stick your head in at about 10.30 on any weekday morning and you'll see one old bloke per table, nursing a flat pint. It's been that way since they shut all the day centres. Not all are over 70 but it's a 50-80 kind of crowd. To be fair they have always been very good at social distancing.

Tim Martin is a giant festering arsehole and I don't trust spoons' ability to safeguard their staff at all. The way Martin has treated his staff so far is enough for me to be confident I don't want to give him a single penny ever again.

Mirada · 29/04/2020 20:29

'the way has treated his staff'.
He's treated them so badly, that for for 17 years in a row, Spoons has been named as one of the UK's best employers, (in an award sponsored by the Guardian).
In the most recent instance,
'if YOU choose go off and work for another company eg. Tesco's...we will give you FIRST PREFERENCE IF YOU WANT TO COME BACK'.
Basically, we will keep your job open for you, however long you choose to go and work for someone else. That's a VERY generous offer.

A newspaper award? Erm, ok.

Generous? WTF.

Some people have a really weird view.

LangClegsInSpace · 29/04/2020 20:40

Hahahaha

Chillipeanuts · 29/04/2020 20:43

Is the “industry leader” Tim Martin, by any chance?
Quelle surprise.
Tosser.

PeterWeg · 29/04/2020 20:51

No chance of pubs opening this year, unless there is a vaccine.

HeIenaDove · 29/04/2020 20:53

Yep Im sure Wetherspoons customers like these will really cooperate with social distancing

Wonder if you'll have to queue to go in?

Starrynightsabove · 29/04/2020 21:00

Absolutely not. The arsehole that runs Wetherspoons campaigned not to lockdown and obviously now campaigning to come out early. He ONLY cares about profit (and Brexit). But he won’t be allowed. I reckon pubs won’t be till October.

McAvennie · 29/04/2020 21:23

I don't think it's a coincidence that he's trying to put a positive spin on getting back to business at the same time he's tapping the shareholders up for £141million!
