When are Tescos going to stop this bloody stupid 80 item limit?

As delivery slots are like gold dust and there’s currently 3 households here who are trying to share a delivery for various reasons

80 items is simply not enough between us - especially as multipacks are often not available so you have to buy 1 tin of beans at a time for example, and means someone has to go out and do top up shops in between

Why are they doing this and when will it stop?

I have a large family and a child with ASD who eats a lot of specific things.

It's ridiculous, especially considering none of the other supermarkets are doing it so its obviously unnecessary.

I get the theory is probably capacity but there’s no logic in actual orders - 80 small items would take up a shit load less space than 80 huge items and there’s no limit on size or weight

For example can order 1 bottle of beer or 1 case of beer and they’re both classed as 1 item.

Even a limit on value would be better than an arbitrary number of items

I heard it's to reduce workload for the order pickers. Looks like it's here to stay for the foreseeable future.

That’s really short sighted if it’s about workload - the additional revenue and profit from sticking a few more items in the crates per delivery must far outweigh the extra cost of doing this

That’s obviously not how the service is intended to be used though, is it? You’re trying to place 1 grocery order for anywhere between 3-15+ people?

They will remove the limit when demand settles. As it stands, if people do what you’re trying to do, delivery vans will become full very quickly therefore there will be even less slots available if they can’t fit the food in the van?

This is exactly why. Three households need three slots. They can’t fit three lots of shopping into a space on the van that’s designed for one.

But the other supermarkets are encouraging households to combine their shopping where possible

We wouldn’t go mad - we just need enough for a week or we have to go out for more stuff

As I said before - there’s limited correlation between the actual capacity of an order and the number of items

1 tin of beans is 4 times smaller than a 4 pack yet you can’t usually buy the latter

I think it's a great idea the driver told me it's so they can fit on more deliveries per van so more people get food. Instead of one van with 3 massive orders they can fit in 6 with the limits. So 6 families getting the basics instead of 3 it's a no brainier .

You don't need to combine shops if you're shopping online though - that's only to reduce the numbers of people going into shops.

I've not had a problem getting a slot just need to check daily, and they release a few days worth at a time.

OK - I’m clearly doing this wrong.

In future I’ll just book my own slot and only use about 40 of the 80 items and fuck everyone else 🤔

It's one slot mon - sun so it's worth creating an account per household or you won't see any slots

Or shop at one of the supermarkets that doesn't have a limit like Asda.

But why is it better to send a van 3 times to the same street, delivering about 40 items a time, than one delivery of about 100 to 120 items?

Tescos are the only supermarket doing this

Morrisons have a weird thing going on where they randomly declare you have “maximum allowed quantity” in your basket. So I can only have 1 bag of salad, 3 bottles of fizzy drink, etc. Amount changes depending on item.

So today I tried to put a twin pack of individual apple pies in my basket. It wouldn’t let me....said max amount had been reached. But I had no pies, cakes, desserts of any description. And it then happily let me put a massive family size apple pie in. So had to buy that even though most of it will be wasted. Bonkers.

If someone has to go and do a top up shop, why doesn't that person go and do the full shop for 3 families. The 80 item limit doesnt apply to supermarket trolleys.

We’re all being asked to shop for other people to ease strain on online shopping, therefore the 80 item rule is unreasonable. Also, I’m shopping for 5 adults in my house, with 80 items. My adult ds is shielding and therefore shops online - he has 80 items for just him and his wife. I hope the system will evolve soon

I agree. For my family of 6 alone it's not enough. Plus I shop for a neighbour.

I guess we just have to make allowances for now, although I agree it’s tricky. We are shopping for 5 plus my parents plus the occasional item for elderly neighbours. The only time I feel miffed is when an item isn’t available and nothing is substituted - so you end up with fewer than 80 items anyway. We need a reserve list! But I’m grateful to get the slots and overall Tesco have been extremely helpful to us.
