Covid self-employed grant, we missed it

I'm so cross. DH didn't get his tax return in on time and it seems we have missed this. It is there in bold when I checked today, it had to have been in end of last week or won't qualify. I take it there is nothing else can be done.

Tax return was due three months ago. No self respecting self employed person would be that late, you'd have a massive fine. Is he being straight with you?

It says 23rd online. It is the accountant who was late. Oh well I guess it is done now.

I guess it was taxable and if you get tax credits would have been used in that as well, so might not have made much difference anyway.

The original deadline was 31st Jan and they extended it for the purposes of these grants and YOU STILL MISSED IT?!

How has your accountant still not got it in? Its been months. What is the accountant doing?

Abreadsandwich didn't either, it's not just us. I'm not sure about the accountant sorry. Guess it might be something to do with the current situation.

Amazing that people are blaming the accountant without knowing how long it took the OP/partner to provide the accountant with all the information needed. If they gave the accountant all the information last April, and it's taken them a year to do it, then, yes, blame the accountant, but if they only gave the information to them 2 weeks ago, then they have only themselves to blame, especially since the deadline was actually 31 January, i.e. nearly 3 months ago!

He's self employed, not me. He will just have to deal with it. I'm not happy about it at all though.

That's absolutely crap of your DH. I'd be furious! As others have said January was the actual deadline. Even my financially challenged best mate got it in, ust about. Despite lots of technical problems....

She specifically said it was the accountant who was late. I wouldn't say that, in that way, if it was me who caused it by providing the documentation late. So if she says that it was the accountant then I assume that means they gave the accountant everything but he/she was still late.

As I mentioned it might not make a lot of difference anyway. He has high overheads which makes the profit lower, and we do get some tax credits, so getting the grant would probably change that. It might not work out much different in the end. Still cross though. WTF is he doing leaving it this late accountant or no? I know this virus has out a spanner in the works for everyone, including accountants and paperwork, but still. I'm glad I don't work with him / share the business with him

If it was on the last day, then it was probably too late. Bear in mind a lot of accountants are furloughed too

Are you positive he's not talking about submitting THIS year's account or something? He's eligible to do that now and could have all the information.

Last year's was due months ago and was only extended for the purposes of the coronavirus grant, so he would already have known he was very late and been subject to a penalty fee for that - it wouldn't come as a surprise.

Oh, I'm not sure. the grants do have some downsides: (cut and paste)-

The grants are taxable. We are seeking clarification on whether this means they are also liable to class 4 National Insurance (NI) and counted as part of your income when assessing student loan repayments (if applicable).

If you claim tax credits you’ll need to include the grant in your claim as income, which may reduce your entitlement to tax credits.

Were these accounts for April this year.
Or for April 2019.
As I thought it was being based upon tax years 2017,2018,2019.

It's mean to be 2018-2019? But his tax year runs from August to August apparently due to when he started Confused.

You have nearly 10 months to do a tax return and then an extra nearly 3 months on top of that for the corona extension, how is this anyone else's fault?

The virus comment have affected the original date of 31st January as there were no known cases in England then. Somebody somewhere isn't telling you the truth about why it wasn't done in time.

No it doesn't there's only one tax year, it's the same for everyone.

His 18/19 tax return would have declared his business profits for year end 31 August 2018 then - so he had even more time to get the paperwork sorted and sent to the accountant!! The 31/8/19 year end would be declared on his 19/20 tax return not due until NEXT January!
