I'm so cross. DH didn't get his tax return in on time and it seems we have missed this. It is there in bold when I checked today, it had to have been in end of last week or won't qualify. I take it there is nothing else can be done.

Ok, well I'm not sure what's going on and I'm not happy- he will need to sort it out. I have health conditions and on cont based ESA and PIP, I have my own bank account. If he has messed up with this he will need to sort it out. Thanks for listening.

I find it all so confusing- tax credits goes by the year previous also and it never seems up to date. It is always kind of a year behind. Anyway- he and the accountant should have sorted this.

If his accounts run from September to August then his January 2020 tax return would have included trade to August 2018. Surely he cannot be that far behind?

Is he definitely self employed, or does he actually run a company.

Orangeblossom78 · 25/04/2020 20:40

The 31/8/19 year end would be declared on his 19/20 tax return not due until NEXT January!

You see that just confuses me further Confused can you explain please?

not a company no,

I know what happens with tax credits is we tell them an estimate in April then you have to tell them the exact profit by January and they ask for that then and it is updated. Due to the accounts - this is always fine

I think you need to get the tax done asap.
As it looks like there may be hope.

It was on Martin Lewis on Thursday, you had to do it by midnight on that day, there is no more hope

Orangeblossom78 · 25/04/2020 20:58

Oh well I don't think it was that much anyway- 80% of monthly profit or something?

So if it was 10K a year on average, that would be say £800 a month, maybe £2400? Yes it would have helped but it is not a huge amount I suppose.

I'm confused, I'm going to look at ours again. We definitely submitted accounts and paid tax at the end of Jan.

WitchDancer · 25/04/2020 21:00

There is no reason for an accountant not to prepare tax returns, even in these difficult times, unless they haven't been given all the information they need. So, may I suggest it's your DH at fault here?

Orangeblossom78 · 25/04/2020 21:04

Well yes he might well be. I fully agree. Abreadsandwich maybe yours is OK.

My dh trades 1 Sept to 31 Aug. So his accounts for each trading year (31 Aug) make up the figures submitted on his tax return the following year.
So the tax return which became due on 6 April 2019 (with Jan 2020 deadline) gave his trading figures as at 31 Aug 2018.
I'd be very angry indeed at my dh if he put us in your position. I've supported his decision to work for himself for the past 30 years and I expect him in return to ensure he complies with the law as well as protecting our household from unnecessary financial stresses.

Orangeblossom78 · 26/04/2020 00:20

Yes because self employment is so easy to protect from unexpected pressures isn't it. It's not unpredictable at all even in such uncertain times. Good for you. I expect this rather small amount of money will have huge repercussions for the future who knows how we wil survive it. But I guess we will, somehow. I will never regain the trust though.

I know this virus has out a spanner in the works for everyone, including accountants and paperwork, but still

But the relevant tax year is 2018/19 or the average of the three years up to then. The tax return was due before the end of January this year but could have been done over a year ago. You'd have to have a hell of a crystal ball to not manage it due to coronavirius. Your trading year is irrelevant, all self employed people need to do a tax return for each April to April tax year.

Either your DH or your accountant needs a rocket up their arse. There's a window of nearly 10 months in which to do it so little excuse not to have it in on time, coronavirius or not, and avoid having to pay big fines, and in this case, missing out on help. The mention of tax credits suggests that you can't afford to throw money down the drain like this.
