Dr Dan Erickson, Covid-19 Briefing - Bakersfield, CA

Legitimate data rather than hypothesis

Compares data from other countries

Talks about immune systems around 17 min mark

Talks about the grave consequences he’s seeing at the hospitals because of the lockdown

Thanks OP, it's a very interesting presentation, and I'm finding it very persuasive.

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/04/27/does-really-mean-follow-science/

Last week, doctors Dan Erickson and Artin Massihi of Bakersfield, California, gave a press conference in which they made some startling claims. They took the test result data we currently have and extrapolated it out across the population. From this they concluded that the number of infected is probably in the millions, which is alarming, but it puts the total number of deaths in perspective: it could mean that the mortality rate for Covid-19 is as low as about 0.1 per cent.

Lots of issues with their data and methodology.

Eg: mobile.twitter.com/CT_Bergstrom/status/1254481543759683584

The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM) have issued this statement:

ACEP-AAEM Joint Statement on Physician Misinformation

The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM) jointly and emphatically condemn the recent opinions released by Dr. Daniel Erickson and Dr. Artin Massihi. These reckless and untested musings do not speak for medical societies and are inconsistent with current science and epidemiology regarding COVID-19. As owners of local urgent care clinics, it appears these two individuals are releasing biased, non-peer reviewed data to advance their personal financial interests without regard for the public’s health.

COVID-19 misinformation is widespread and dangerous. Members of ACEP and AAEM are first-hand witnesses to the human toll that COVID-19 is taking on our communities. ACEP and AAEM strongly advise against using any statements of Drs. Erickson and Massihi as a basis for policy and decision making."

Saw this thread late last night and came back on this morning for a look. The video has been removed from YouTube. I have just been listening to the latest Joe Rogan podcast where they were talking a lot about YT censorship. Apparently they are removing any content that does not toe the WHO line. Weird times.

LastTrainEast · 29/04/2020 08:47

MotheringShites Youtube don't care, but are required to remove fake news by various governments.

They also remove videos encouraging self-harm, drug use, grooming and so on.

For milder stuff like the flat earth and Alien abductions they just stop automatically recommending it to users, but leave it there if anyone searches for it.

Mustbetimeforachange · 29/04/2020 09:12

It's still on you tube today. I thought they had some very odd extrapolations. How do they explain the tsunami of cases in NY/Italy etc? I'll admit to only watching a small part of it so they may explain!

Mumlove5 · 29/04/2020 09:18

It is very scary that the video was taken down. They gathered data from the hospital they worked in. They’re saying hospitals have not been overwhelmed, actually far from it.

The doctors from CA are saying we pretty much have to live with this virus. I don’t believe they have an ulterior motive. Our immune systems have been greatly suppressed from these lockdowns.

Their testing wasn’t that far off from new antibody studies that are coming out from CA, NY, Germany, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, etc. The death rate suggests that it’s between 0.1 - 0.4%. Once more studies come out, I won’t be surprised that it will be on the lower end given how widespread the virus actually is.

Top doctors from around the world are saying this virus is seasonal and here to stay forever.

We know who is vulnerable. Ninety percent of people who are dying from this are elderly and have at least one co-morbidity, more 2 - 3.

I have no idea if they were crackpots or accredited professionals. I would like the opportunity to see the content and make up my own mind. I can’t find the video anywhere.

Confusedasusual78 · 29/04/2020 09:40

This seemed an excellent analysis, it’s really odd it’s been taken down!

Mumlove5 · 29/04/2020 09:41

Dr John Ioannidis gathered data from Italy and NYC, explaining why certain areas were hotspots.

He talks about Italy at the 16 minute mark in this video.

There is a recent video of him discussing New York by the same production company. I forget where in the interview he talks about it.

This is an interesting article

Other people are beginning to post the video...

Perhaps YouTube removed it because of racist comments in the comments section?
(The link to the video on YouTube was being tweeted by Katie Hopkins and other far right figures as well as by prominent Trump supporters and American right wingers).

buttermilkwaffles · 29/04/2020 11:27

"They gathered data from the hospital they worked in. "

But their data was flawed due to sampling bias as explained here: mobile.twitter.com/CT_Bergstrom/status/1254481543759683584

(They don't just work in a hospital, they own 5 urgent care clinics.). They are not virologists or epidemiologists.

You link to an article advocating listening to different views, but yet you are cherry picking information which supports only your views!

@buttermilkwaffles

LOL, thank you for stalking me!Grin Joking

The video from two credible doctors in Bakersfield, CA was deleted from YouTube after 24-48 hours. They were reporting, very calmly, their statistics (from CDC) that showed we probably should open up. Why deleted?

Neil Ferguson said the same you said during his interview on UnHerd...

Anyone who is in disagreement with his glorious model is because people are finding oppositional data “only” to fit their views. This is completely wrong, dangerous and only shows his lack of humility.

Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

This is an important article for you to read:

The US is on course for 280,000 deaths.

Bluntness100 · 04/05/2020 19:49

As much as I agree lock down is doing more damage now than good and we are moving into a phase of the cure being worse than the disease if it goes on much longer, I do think people need to understand sage is 50 eminent scientists, not just NEIL Ferguson. It’s not a one man band. He is simply the face of their findings.

BelleSausage · 04/05/2020 19:52

The US government admits it is expecting 3000 deaths a day in June from Covid-19

ToffeeYoghurt · 04/05/2020 20:14

Why are these two particular US doctors more credible than the many other US doctors who disagree? Why are they more credible than all the expert virologists around the world?

I don't know the figures for America but we're in the UK and our death rate is the highest we've had in April for years and years. Significantly so.

We haven't got capacity and the NHS isn't coping and that's IN lockdown. The line that it's coping ignores that it's simply failing to treat patients. People are dying at home or admitted to hospital at a stage where survival is less likely. That's a big reason why the UK has one of the highest death rates in the world.

A musician died today. One of the stranglers. He caught Covid whilst he was in hospital for something else. That's exactly why we had to postpone non urgent non Covid work. It takes just one infected patient or HCP to spread it. Imagine that happening in a fully operating hospital?

What do you think happens if we weren't in lockdown OP? If that's how badly we're coping and how many desths we have during it. Who cares for us when hospitals are overwhelmed with Covid infections - staff and patients alike? Who drives us around when transport workers are off sick or dead? Who maintains our power and food supplies when workers are off sick or dead?

Personally I'd rather follow the advice of the majority of doctors and particularly experts in virology and epidemiology worldwide. Mass testing and early treatment with antivirals, precautionly antibiotics (to prevent secondary infections) and if required oxygen.

Let's (finally) get hold of enough PPE and drugs and then we can ease lockdown. Other countries, some poorer than us, have managed it so there's no reason why we can't too.
