I'm so upset - I've been Facebook shamed!

We don't have much outside space, so I took my 3 youngest (8, 6 and 5) to the park to ride their bikes. The park is about a 10 minute walk away but we had to drive because my 8 year old has a broken leg (in a cast). We parked in the park's car park. There was no one there apart from us. The kids started biking on the grass but then they decided to bike round the carpark - smooth tarmac, so great to get their confidence up.

Anyway, after 30 mins we put the bikes back in the car and drove home.

I have just seen on our local Facebook group that someone has posted a short video clip of us (filmed from a distance, assuming from someone's bedroom window) and said 'Due to covidiots like his continuing to drive to our village to use our park, we are locking the gates to discourage it. If anyone knows these people please let them know we've got them on film!'.

I am mortified. The post has had about 20 likes, but a few people are saying that parks are open so they don't see the problem and that the government have specifically told councils to leave parks open.

Did I do anything wrong? I'm really shy so don't plan on responding to the post but I only drove there due to my daughter's broken leg, and secondly, we didn't see anyone and thirdly, now the park is not accessable to us because there is nowhere safe to park near it. We have now lost the use of our local park Sad I just don't understand

OP posts:

Oh OP that is horrid!
Bloody mobile phones and curtain twitchers....People are bored and are turning into mini 'Dad's Army' characters, like the officious bloke who says ''Put that light out'' ! all the time...
Some people are really beyond the pale... if your kids were keeping away from everyone else, what IS the problem? Flowers

cowfacemonkey · 21/04/2020 19:57

Well done for posting. To be honest if the person posting is part of the parish council (assuming they must be if they have authority to close the park) I would be emailing a complaint there to about them posting video on facebook.

itsgettingweird · 21/04/2020 19:58

As an aside cycling gloves are really helpful when using crutches long term.

OP that is horrid of that person.

Casino218 · 21/04/2020 20:04

People are just getting silly. Tonight a man with his two children tried to climb a 60 degree steep banking to get off the wide path away from us. His kids all scraped themselves. It was awful to watch and unnecessary! There is a certain hysteria breaking out.

Hileni · 21/04/2020 20:05

Sorry that happened to you OP! You haven't broken any rules whatsoever and have completly complied with lockdown guidance.

Share this link with the group: it's from the NPCC and tells you exactly what you can and can't do. That should shut their horrible, curtain twitching traps!

It's funny how only a few weeks ago after Caroline Flack we were all rushing round spouting 'Be kind' and.now.its 'Let's grass each other up so I can show everyone how I quarentine better than everyone else!'

oakleaffy · 21/04/2020 20:06

@itsgettingweird Agree with cycle gloves {Padded palms} really helping with crutches...It is amazing how sore hands get, even with elbow crutches..If they are the oldskool ''Jim Laad'' ones that go under the arms...Those need padding with bubble wrap to stop chafing, plus gloves.

xxxemzyxxx · 21/04/2020 20:08

I’m glad you’ve posted back to them OP, do let us know the outcome! I hope they feel utterly ashamed of themselves.

Gawd, eejits appointing themselves monitors. I bet you anything, 99% of people are reading that thinking either, well I've been going out too, I thought we were allowed out locally for exercise, I don't get it.......

Watch Jon Ronson's excellent ted talk about the desire for shaming. Hang on.

TiredofSM · 21/04/2020 20:10

So I agree you haven’t done anything wrong, but I live in a London borough that has shut all car parks to their green spaces. They did this a couple of weeks ago because they didn’t want people driving to visit.
Admittedly the guidance says you can drive as long you walk for longer but the person who posted it probably thinks they are right.
I hope they apologise but somehow I doubt it...

namechange8765455 · 21/04/2020 20:11

Good on you for having a voice to see off the bullies. Now step away. Don't get drawn into discussion. You have nothing to prove or defend. You did the right thing.

TryingToBeBold · 21/04/2020 20:12

I'm glad you stood up for yourself.
You're allowed to travel (within reason) or exercise.
People putting their own rules in is just pathetic.

GaaaaarlicBread · 21/04/2020 20:12

Just want to say it’s so nice to see such supportive comments on a thread here on MN . So refreshing !
You’ve done nothing wrong OP you haven’t gone out for a family picnic with extended family, you’ve taken your children out for some fresh air like you’re allowed to x

namechange8765455 · 21/04/2020 20:13

And don't post on here what they say, it will just add more words and emotion to this situation. Step away from it now. It's actually not about you, it's about them. Rise above it. Flowers

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 21/04/2020 20:13

Well done OP/ let us know the outcome

JingsMahBucket · 21/04/2020 20:14

@Whatsthis1515 if I were you I would screenshot the FB post and all the comments before it gets deleted.

Elouera · 21/04/2020 20:14

Another option for DD, depending if she can bend her knee, is a kneeling scooter thing like this. You rest your bad leg on it, and can scoot around on flat surfaces much quicker than with crutches. You can hire them, or possibly get one from nextdoor/ebay:

I thought the same, nice to see a bit of humanity.

Giganticshark · 21/04/2020 20:17

Good for you don't let twats get away with it. Love a live thread can't wait to hear what the twats have to say

PolloDePrimavera · 21/04/2020 20:18

That's ridiculous!! I'm one for thinking you shouldn't have to justify yourself but you are definitely right to say something. And how brave of them posting a video from a distance rather than talking to you directly. Dicks.

Stephie0x3 · 21/04/2020 20:21

Not much I can add OP other than in agreement with previous comments from others! as if you don’t have enough going on with your poor DD breaking her leg. You aren’t to blame for the park shutting. Xx

YappityYapYap · 21/04/2020 20:26

You didn't do anything wrong. I would actually be tempted to report the person that took the video to the police for filming your children then sharing it on Facebook. I don't think it's a crime what they've done (maybe someone else can clarify?) But it's very shaky grounds for someone to film children and share it on a public forum
