Summer holidays and positive thinking

Have you anything booked and what do you think the chances are of being able to go?

We are meant to be in Turkey at the beginning of August. I think I'll cry if it's all off but prefer to think positive right now.

Caribbean end July, booked own flights/accommodation so waiting for Virgin to cancel before we can claim anything, have to pay balance on the accom this month Sad

teenagetantrums · 21/04/2020 21:23

We have a UK holiday booked end off June. I'm not sure it will happen but maybe. I'm so happy we had week in canaries in march before all this happened as looks like Spain in September may be off.

LittleRen · 21/04/2020 21:24

End of August... Florida / Texas for three weeks. I think we're more likely be allowed into USA than elsewhere in Europe, but I still don't think we'll be going.

Snowpatrolling · 21/04/2020 21:25

Had a holiday in may booked with Thomas cook!!
Replaced it with a cruise, has just been cancelled.
I have a billie Eilish concert in July and a few days in LEGO land end of August for my daughters bday.
I’m praying they both still go ahead although I doubt it. :(

Whattodowhattodooo · 21/04/2020 21:27

Somerset 1st week of August with best friends and all the kids. Was so looking forward to it. Its a Haven so I very much doubt its going to go ahead.

Drivingdownthe101 · 21/04/2020 21:28

We had our first holiday abroad in 3 years booked for July... well not entirely a holiday, it was to visit the IL’s for the first time in 3 years. I’m 100% sure it won’t be happening.

Maryann1975 · 21/04/2020 21:30

@Monkeytapper was it a package holiday you have changed the dates and transferred the deposit for? Which company? I had wondered if any companies were allowing this to happen. We are meant to be going to Rhodes in August, but really apprehensive about flying anywhere this year.

catsjammies · 21/04/2020 21:32

We were supposed to be in Australia over Easter, then family was supposed to come and visit from overseas in June/July. All cancelled. We're hoping to go to Australia for 6 weeks over Christmas now instead. I really hope we can- by then it'll have been almost 2 years since I will have seen my family 😭

Pleasedontdrawonyoursister · 21/04/2020 21:32

We have a UK holiday booked late June. I am convinced it won’t be going ahead so I would be 99% sure you won’t be flying abroad I’m afraid Sad

Spanish government has hinted that there will be no tourism before the end of this year: www.elmundo.es/economia/macroeconomia/2020/04/19/5e9c6c79fc6c8395218b45f3.html

Italy, similar. Czech Republic mentioned not until 2021. France said maybe September this year, but that was said a while ago so may have changed...

buttermilkwaffles · 21/04/2020 22:03

On the other hand, this is slightly more optimistic (but still vague).

We are supposed to be going to Orlando for 3 weeks at the beginning of August. Not holding out any hope. Booked DIY ,so preparing to argue to get money back. Sad

pinkrocker · 21/04/2020 22:57

West Cyprus for 10 days with my DC to see my friends and family mid August. We've already had our entire family trip to Cyprus next month cancelled but I've rebooked for May 2021, it's all paid for anyway. I'll be absolutely gutted if August's trip doesn't take place, but I'll understand.

Eccle80 · 21/04/2020 22:59

Looks like our holiday is off. We were meant to be going to Duinrell in the Netherlands in August, but the country has just banned gatherings over 100 people until 1st September which I assume will keep the holiday park closed

Monkeytapper · 22/04/2020 02:41

@Maryann1975 It was a Jet2 holiday. No admin charge to change. We also had a Jet2 holiday booked for beginning of April which we got a full refund for. Although they said we could only have a credit note or rebook but we insisted on a refund for that one.

I think that whilst borders may open again at some point, the point being missed is that most Europeans, can, if desired, hop in their car and pop over a border or two to holiday. For us Brits it is not that simple. Until we allow mass gatherings again then I can’t see how the government is going to allow 170 people on basically a small tin box and more importantly, tens of thousands of people into an airport. There is no indoor gathering more mass than an airport. Social distancing is virtually impossible. There have been rumours in the education environment that schools will reopen end May/early June but they are fully preparing for them to shut again in November/December as we get hit with another wave and the NHS is busy at that time of year. I would imagine ferries would be a similar and there will certainly be no cruises based on what has happened with those.

You then have to factor in insurance and the likely lack of cover for Covid related problems. This becomes a huge problem, particularly after we have left the EU. Anyone who plans to travel without cover that will pay out for Covid related problems would need to be certified because I can only imagine what a 2/3 week stint in ICU abroad would cost together with the air ambulance home.

I therefore can’t see any holidays abroad until at least 2021 and it may be well into that year too.

For the UK, they have the problem of mass gatherings too. If they suddenly allow people who now can’t go abroad, to go away in the UK then seaside towns, campsites, the Lakes and the like would be completely overrun with people. Again I can’t see them allowing that.

I think it will be vaccine or cure needed to get things fully back to normal. In the meantime they will loosen lockdowns and then tighten them again when numbers spike.

The outlook doesn’t look great at the moment for me so I wouldn’t make major plans for anything until this is over.

When do you think the govt will extend the travel ban? Due to go to Greece in July and I can't decide what to do about paying the balance. I'm not sure I even want to risk going anymore... Just with they would extend the ban!
