Why have the news stopped reported on Spain and Italy?

I prefer Channel 4 news to BBC because they are reporting in depth on more than just the UK.

I am very interested in how Europe is doing managing the situation.

It feels like now they may be over the peak the news isn’t interested any more.

Can anyone direct me to any current news reports in English about these countries.

Thanks

Probably because all the space/ time earmarked for overseas coverage of COVID in the past week or so, has been devoted to Trump and his rapidly escalating stupidity in the US.

ihatethecold · 20/04/2020 08:18

Yes I agree but the news here seems to just focus on a repeat of PPE (very important) and captain Tom ( lovely, but enough already!)

I want to hear about the rest of the world.

I need to find a different news source that more varied.

Sky news do still. They even have a reporter who reports from Rome. They had a section on yesterday about a bus driving around with messages too.

PlanDeRaccordement · 20/04/2020 08:19

I agree OP, they are past the peak and so the news is no longer interested. Sorry I don’t have any reports to link you to. All I have is the WHO situation report webpage
www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/situation-reports/

I hope that doesn’t happen here. No one would believe anything Boris writes on a bus, surely?

Oh.

PlanDeRaccordement

Thanks. They only time I cried in this time is watching the news reporting on the Spanish care homes about 3/4 weeks ago.

It haunted me seeing relatives outside desperate to see loved ones who were dying at at an awfully fast rate.

I think my heart broke that night.

I find sky news balanced and wide ranging, likely because it’s on constantly rather than limited to a given time slot.

Parker231 · 20/04/2020 08:31

Sky news has quite a long segment yesterday on what’s it’s like in one of the worst areas of Italy. Huge state of the art hospital which is really struggling to cope both mentally and physically with the number of deaths they are dealing with.

CottonEaster · 20/04/2020 08:32

MsJane Grin

Also, Belgium! Highest deaths per million according to Worldometer. I haven't seen anything about this until I went searching. And then found an article saying its because they are counting nursing home deaths (which they arent in the UK) but other countries (Ireland and Spain) are so its not that clear cut. Strangely ignored.

ihatethecold · 20/04/2020 08:32

Thanks Parker.
I wonder if I can rewatch this online.

@CottonEaster we do count nursing home deaths. But they come in a bit later when the data is there. Hospital data comes in first and rather than waiting to release that, they release it and then add the out of hospital deaths later. Why is this a consistent false story circulating?

RigaBalsam · 20/04/2020 08:40

Oh.GrinGrin

CottonEaster · 20/04/2020 08:42

Ooh sorry Bool. It has been reported that the UK are (were?) Not reporting nursing home deaths. Maybe that was the case? It was the explanation as to why Belgium's no's are so high.

LeeMiller · 20/04/2020 08:42

The news from Italy (and I believe Spain) is the figures for infections and deaths are gradually improving, easing of lockdown is being discussed but hasn't been implemented yet. Lots more care home deaths. It doesn't make for such dramatic reporting. I imagine when lockdown is lifted there will be more reporting on Italy again.
The British media has always been US-centric and Trump obsessed. The New York Times, Financial Times and sometimes the Guardian have decent regular updates and in-depth reports on Italy and other European countries at the moment.

Bool · 20/04/2020 08:42

They report the NHS hospital deaths daily because the information is available. The ONS then goes through every death certificate to count deaths in the community/care homes but because it takes a few days to do a death certifucate, these numbers are only available weekly. They are added in regularly.
It’s the time it takes to report and log the death, not refusing to count them and then being “forced”.

WanderingMilly · 20/04/2020 08:44

Quite agree. The news is sadly lacking, all focussed on PPE and who to blame instead of getting on with the job in hand.
There is The Rest of the World out there. How is the rest of Europe faring? Africa? Russia?
What about countries with unrest, what's happening? And the economies, we seem to be shielded from that news. And other things must be happening....forest fires, volcanoes, refugees, global warming.... The world hasn't entirely stopped and with the internet it can't be too difficult to make some sort of report....

mumwon · 20/04/2020 08:46

do a search for Italian newspapers in English
or whatever country you are interested in

GreyishDays · 20/04/2020 08:47

But @Bool I can only find these figures up to end 3rd April. Are there more recent ones that I’m missing?
So we are reporting nursing home deaths but not in a meaningful way if the recent figures aren’t available.

user1486723488 · 20/04/2020 08:48

Http:English.elpais.com for news from Spain
Http:France24.com news from France

Bool · 20/04/2020 08:48

@greyish I don’t know. I am just saying that we are not only reporting hospital deaths here. That’s fake news.

LetMeOutOfHere · 20/04/2020 08:49

I also wondered this. Now numbers are going down it's like the don't want to report it.

mumwon · 20/04/2020 08:51

I found Euronews which apparently shows news across Europe (well obviously doh - directed to self! Grin) per individual states as well as just Italian Newspaper

user1486723488 · 20/04/2020 08:53

If you want news about other countries, you need to find their media sources. Very few journos abroad are giving much news about UK, beyond what an astounding mess it is right now. There are several websites which list press resources by country to begin with. It is difficult to understand at first political affiliations of the press abroad but it is worth working out to understand which side of the story and bias you are reading. The alternative media, Twitter and a lot of forums are also publishing global data too.

GreyishDays · 20/04/2020 08:54

Ok. For 4th April to yesterday our figures do not include deaths out issue of hospitals. Other countries do include nursing homes in their daily updates. We don’t.
Better @Bool ?

Humphriescushion · 20/04/2020 09:03

I think what i would like is for care home figures to be included in the update from the gov when they do the t.v update. Maybe a weekly or daily update. I understand these figures maybe behind and i also understand the ons publish these, however they are not clear to me at all. it was not easy for me to find the 217 figure given by the ons for earlier this month ( i dont believe these were hidden just way they are done).
There is a total line now on the gov updates graphs but is very much behind. And the gov does now state the figures are for hosital only. It is now much more than 217 and think people want clear information on from the updates.
