Why have the news stopped reported on Spain and Italy?

I prefer Channel 4 news to BBC because they are reporting in depth on more than just the UK.

I am very interested in how Europe is doing managing the situation.

It feels like now they may be over the peak the news isn’t interested any more.

Can anyone direct me to any current news reports in English about these countries.

Thanks

Spanish news here

Children will be allowed out for two hours from 27th, specific times depending on their age. They've been locked in since 14th March.l

We're running low on PPE, people are making and donating PPE on a large scale, people are being fined for dickish behaviour, windows are full of children's rainbows. Shops are full of food and loo rolls, the only difficult thing to find is flour. Schools are teaching via Moodle and Zoom, which of course not all children can access.

Sky news have got reporters on the ground in Rome and Madrid. There are also a couple of reporters who seem to be floating around Belgium, The Netherlands and Northern France.

Scotland report care home deaths in their daily update once a week. They are much more up to date than 3rd of April.

I also noticed this that for several days/weeks we got a lot of new on the severity of the situation in italy and Spain, and the relatively less affected Germany. Now it just seems to focus on UK and US.

The problem with care home/community deaths is the figures are unreliable as residents are not tested. GPs certifying deaths may put ‘Covid’ on the death certificate but without testing that is not enough to be sure. Currently nearly all testing is symptomatic patients in hospital - but only a quarter are positive. So if every ‘symptomatic’ death was recorded as ‘Covid’ it could result in a figure that is much higher than the true figure.

I thought the same but thought I had heard there had been already cases in refugee camps. The idea that people who have risked everything to leave war torn areas, and left with nothing to now be hit by cv19 (without any facility to social distance, let alone deal with the virus) does not bear thinking about 😢😢😢

@Aesopfable Elderly people deaths are recorded all the time as certain causes without proper testing or autopsies. Nothing new.
Yes I know the governemment want to keep covid 19 deaths figure artificially low.

@Sparklingplasters

The link is showing that France has a very worrying number of deaths. more than the Uk.

I wish that the testing and reporting of cases and deaths was more unified. its very hard to get a true picture if going by the worldometer list. How is India so low?

I know why India is showing so low but there's no way its accurate or even close to the true figures.

They had a section on yesterday about a bus driving around with messages too

That, the singing and dancing police and our own happy clappy Thursdays is very "Bread and Circuses".

You know things are bad when it's time for bread and circuses.

@ihate, that is because worldometers includes care home deaths for france, this figure is not in the uk no.s. This figure adds another 7000 to to hospital death of around 12,000, so the uk figure is much higher for hospitals than france. I know i keep banging on about this.

Re: Belgium - they are counting suspected as well as confirmed deaths from Covid. Confirmed (by testing) figure is significantly lower.

For good European coverage, check out Politico's Coronavirus in Europe pages.

I know, ihate, it is all very unclear. Some sources include them and some dont. As far as i am aware, france, ireland, belguim add them. Scotland gives the figures as well. I think now the graphs and figures used by the financial times now takes off the care home deaths for france so these are an accurate comparision.

thesedaysarescary · 20/04/2020 11:37

@Bool they are not adding the community or care homes into the figures. Those figures are hospital deaths only. The graph on the daily briefing show 2 different lines. The 16000 number is just from hospitals with 5000 deaths up to the 3rd of April outside hospitals. Ons figures tomorrow will change that 2nd number but by how much I dread to think!

Report
Aesopfable · 20/04/2020 11:42

alloutoffucks All deaths are recorded but for elderly there is often there is no specific cause listed. It is not usual to give as a cause of death a condition or disease based symptoms when the vast majority with those symptoms do not have the condition. This suggests there needs to be a lot more testing of care homes/community. Even doing random sample testing would be good to give a better indication of prevalence.
