This is depressing. I guess that means they don't intend to relax lockdown in any way before then - but won't we then just get a second wave in time for flu season?

@romeojuliet. Plenty of large companies are having to furlough all kinds of staff - not all are easy to recruit quickly. Its not just bar tenders affected you know. The point is that these companies should in theory be able to pick up quickly. The government also knows but doesn't admit that the benefits system is not fit for purpose and if all these people lost their incomes there would be an absolute crisis as they wouldn't be able to cover their living costs.

BamboozledandBefuddled · 17/04/2020 19:23

No it was meant for all companies who are affected.
This. DH is in construction. There was overwhelming public support for that industry carrying on, wasn't there?

@ DreamChaser23 I'm assuming it'll be UC. We can stop on holiday and become benefit scroungers instead Grin

BamboozledandBefuddled · 17/04/2020 19:24

Stop being on holiday, I meant!

Luckyfab · 17/04/2020 19:25

If the government decided to offer the furlough scheme is not because it is a charity but for the economy to run. You are complaining to pay taxes for furloughed, I complain to pay taxes for healthy and capable people who are on benefits.
It is ok to pay taxes for people on benefits but it is not ok to pay for those who have always worked and would continue to do so but had to stop for circumstances not depending on them? We live in an unfair World

LooQoo · 17/04/2020 19:28

@esjee

Unlike those that are being paid 80% of their salary to not work and moan about it, that sounds pretty selfish and self centred to me. Spare a thought for those that have to carry on going to work.

esjee · 17/04/2020 19:30

People don't realise how low UC is or that housing benefit is unlikely to cover much or the rent or mortgage unless you live in the lowest cost place possible or share. Having a large number of people go on UC instead of being furloughed would be a nightmare. They would struggle to cover living costs and it would also reduce the ability of a large part of the population to spend, making economic recovery harder. Some will still end up on it, but hopefully less. The government knows UC is useless in a crisis of this magnitude. What should be acknowledged is that it isn't good enough even outside of a crisis.

BamboozledandBefuddled · 17/04/2020 19:31

I've got plenty of sympathy for anyone who is struggling in any way, for any reason. Until they shoot their mouth off and show that they're too full of self-pity to have any room left for sympathy for others.

esjee · 17/04/2020 19:31

@LooQoo sure, will you spare a thought for me if I lose my job in 2 months?

LooQoo · 17/04/2020 19:31

@BamboozledandBefuddled

I was made redundant - I’m confused that you think redundancy is a secure little bubble for me but not for your DH. Are you and your DH more worthy than others?

SaltySeaBird · 17/04/2020 19:32

Too many companies are abusing it. My DSis has been told she has to do work “voluntarily” and has also been told this week they are furloughing her from the start of April although she has been working normally. They are topping her pay up to 100% (because basically she is still working). If she disagrees, she loses her job.

LooQoo · 17/04/2020 19:32

@esjee

Thanks for expressing your concern for my recent redundancy. Oops missed that. So no I won’t spare a concern for you if you lose your job too.

LooQoo · 17/04/2020 19:35

@BamboozledandBefuddled

I have no sympathy for you because you are so self centred. In your opinion, I deserve to be redundant because you don’t like my opinions but your DH doesn’t deserve to be redundant. You sound incredibly self centred.

esjee · 17/04/2020 19:35

@LooQoo. It was a rhetorical question! I already know you don't give a fuck about anything but your potential tax increase from all us holidaymakers.

esjee · 17/04/2020 19:37

@SaltySeaBird. That's an example of one company abusing it, not "too many".

LooQoo · 17/04/2020 19:37

@esjee

You know me so well that you know I don’t give a fuck about absolutely anything else my potential tax increase?

esjee · 17/04/2020 19:38

@LooQoo Do run along now. I'm bored with your attitude.

Looking at ny some primary and secondary kids will die . Though we have 80k cases so might expect 3x those figures or so as we have 15k deaths

Sadly, I think many people will be made redundant before furlough ends. Holiday pay still accrues as well as redundancy entitlement so if there is no job to go back to firms will make people redundant sooner rather than later.

LooQoo · 17/04/2020 19:40

@esjee

Have a think about how you may come across at interview just in case you do lose your job. Angry and entitled doesn’t tend to generate many job offers.

esjee · 17/04/2020 19:42

@LooQoo Did I stutter?

cathcath2 · 17/04/2020 19:42

@Chrisinthemorning those figures only cover to the end of March.

LooQoo · 17/04/2020 19:45

@esjee

Do you own mumsnet? Thought not. So you telling someone to go away because you disagree with their opinion is completely ineffective.

If this is how you behave at work then you should be concerned about redundancy.

esjee · 17/04/2020 19:48

@LooQoo Are you still on this lol? I've already realised what an utter waste of my life the last 10 minutes have been and moved on. Are you struggling to do the same? Is there any benefit on dragging this silly argument out ffs. Are you getting joy out of this pointless shite? Reply all you want, I'm out now.

LooQoo · 17/04/2020 19:54

@esjee

If this is how you behave when someone has a different opinion than you, then you aren’t fit to be in the workplace. Redundancy pending?

NeneValley · 17/04/2020 19:56

@TJH130

s also to push the end of Furlough beyond the statutory redundancy period, which would be the key date next week

What does this mean please?
