This is depressing. I guess that means they don't intend to relax lockdown in any way before then - but won't we then just get a second wave in time for flu season?

Thesuzle I didn’t suggest Labour could, why would they? It’s still a huge amount to borrow. Still wondering about those loans too - now not secured against assets / homes.

I was furloughed and didn’t want to be. You don’t get a choice - if you don’t accept, they can make you redundant or force unpaid leave. I have a baby so will be caring for her while off so my partner can work. I’m stressed and anxious and can’t sleep, can’t stop worrying about redundancy. I was furloughed because I have a child (person covering my role doesn’t), simple as that, it’s everything I feared about going on maternity leave come to pass, I feel isolated, depressed and desperately insecure about the future and there is nothing I can do about it.

The posters who are jealous of people who have been furloughed, give your heads a wobble.
People are not furloughed out of choice, we are in national lockdown and therefore the majority of workers have no work to do hence being forced into furlough. So it’s either unpaid leave or redundancy or try and save jobs but even then there is still no guarantee. It’s not exactly a holiday is it? Sitting at home with nowhere to go, no visitors or visiting anyone is boring, homeschooling is boring and difficult, there is still a pay cut so less income and the worry there may not be a job at all at the end of lockdown so how on Earth is it unfair?
I would say it’s unfair that some people are working as normal whilst others are furloughed within the same organisation, there is resentment from those still working who deem it unfair (despite still having a job) and those who are furloughed as they don’t feel good enough and if not needed now, will they be needed after lockdown?
It’s not as straightforward as “ooh look at those lazy bastards on furlough”, so what if they are sitting in their conservatory’s or having a BBQ? What exactly are they meant to be doing in their own homes? Self-flagellating whilst screaming “I’m sorry for being furloughed?”. Come on people, we’re all in this together, aren’t we? 🙄🧐

There are some really angry, jealous people around today.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 18/04/2020 00:38

It’s the likes of BubblyBarbara who are busy creating a them situation. Laying off tons of staff is not going to make Life any easier for those still working full time when lockdown is over, unless you want to be hastily hiring and training up new employees in place of the old ones from 3 months ago. Then you really will be busy. Your furloughed colleagues are now struggling to pay their bills. Don’t begrudge them for sitting in the garden, it’s free.

ClientQ · 18/04/2020 00:43

I'm on furlough as my workplace is closed. But I'm shielding so I can't even get out for a walk. Damn right I'm sitting in the garden and catching up on box sets, this is the longest I've ever had off work and I worked through some horrific times when working for the NHS. It is what it is, if this had been 4 years ago I would have been NHS still

Peppafrig · 18/04/2020 00:47

Are people actually jealous of people on furlough? What would they prefer everyone to be homeless and hungry?

ineedaholidaynow · 18/04/2020 01:35

@NeneValley if furlough hadn’t been extended and was going to end on 31st May, a number of employers would have had to start 45 day consultation period for potential redundancy for the furloughed employees. Employees should only be furloughed if there is no work for them to do, if they are doing any work for their employer the employer is breaking the law. If furlough didn’t exist these employees would have been made redundant. Therefore, if furlough ceases these companies need to start redundancy procedures. If more than 100 employees are affected than there has to be a 45 day consultation period, which if furlough hadn’t been extended would have ended on 31st May.

NigellasGuest · 18/04/2020 01:52

The workplaces will get taxed on the furloughed funds received, as if it is profit. It will have to be inuded on next tax return. That's not great for smaller businesses. Cheaper to pay interest in a loan.

BubblyBarbara · 18/04/2020 10:21

All I know is people will come back off furlough eager to finally get back to work and then be working alongside people who haven’t had any break at all. The people working now deserve a break when the furloughees go back!

Bellendejour · 18/04/2020 14:04

No one has any choice in the matter, or didn’t at our work, the guy who is covering my job doesn’t have a choice, I don’t have a choice. The decision is made for you by management and you just have to accept it, however anxious, unappreciated and replaceable it makes you feel. When I go back - if I get to go back - my confidence will be at an all time low, when it was shaky anyway after maternity. It’s not a nice situation for anyone.
