where is Pritti Patel?

My understanding is that the "Big Four" positions in government are PM, Chancellor, Foreign Secretary and Home Secretary. So why isn't Pritti Patel appearing at any if the press conferences or being involved in the Covid meetings? Surely as the person with responsibility for national security etc she ought to be putting in an appearance? Instead there are people like Gove making statements. Why?

Because she's awful and they all know it. Her and Rees Mogg.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 09/04/2020 18:49

I agree she's dreadful but surely she should at least be popping up from time to time? If she can't be trusted to speak at a time of National emergency then she should be replaced.
I'm not a Gove fan at all but he has managed to go up in my estimation overcame this.

She's got a lot of baggage though. The court case about bullying is on-going and she was only given the job to be tough on immigration as she is less vulnerable on that than a white person. She isn't good on her feet like Gove. She shouldn't have an important job but she was a useful idiot.

FantasticButtocks · 09/04/2020 19:00

They are keeping her and Rees-Mogg well out of the way during this. Because either of them would be bound to say something really tactless and insensitive, and they need not to alienate people while we are all having to pull together. Both of them are utterly lacking in any kind of empathy and are just too likely to be downright offensive, so they really can't let them appear.

InglouriousBasterd · 09/04/2020 19:05

She has a natural ‘smirk’ to her face which was pointed out furiously already by Andrew Marr - I don’t think they could risk the smirk being present whilst talking about deaths. Then there’s her incompetency..!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 09/04/2020 19:05

I think all that is true, but then surely she cannot hold on to her job?

Saw this earlier. Made me laugh

where is Pritti Patel?
The80sweregreat · 09/04/2020 19:11

I would rather they didn't have her on any of the daily news reports. I haven't missed her or her condescending smirks.
I'm sure she's busy with her job but I think she would come across as too insincere.
It's true that any Labour Home Secretary being awol at a time like this would be hounded by the Daily Mail.

Rosehip10 · 09/04/2020 19:45

Imagine her smirking when accounting hundreds of deaths......

maryberrystalentlesstwin · 09/04/2020 20:16

I hadn't really realised until now that she's been completely absent. She's the bloody British version of Trump, or Kellyanne Conway. She would inevitably say something untrue and / or offensive. So they've kept her out of it.
I think she'll get fired but now is not the time for that, obviously.

cologne4711 · 10/04/2020 09:20

She's woken up now, and for the first time in her life said something sensible: www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/patel-warns-police-against-being-heavy-handed-z0ctqfbj3

The article is behind a paywall but begins: Priti Patel has warned police against being “heavy-handed” over the sunny Easter weekend as she rejected calls by senior officers for tougher lockdown powers.

PristineCondition · 10/04/2020 09:25

Her entire thing is her hate for low paid people- cockroaches to her.
She cant bring herself to be seen praising them because in a few months she will be back on her bench telling us they are waster scum again

PristineCondition · 10/04/2020 09:25

Peregrina · 10/04/2020 09:32

I really, really do hope that this is remembered, that we have relied on the low paid, (previously dismissed as low skilled), and tell Priti Patel what she can do with her immigration ideas.

Turning down committee appearances too.

MajesticWhine · 10/04/2020 09:34

I don't want to see her or Rees-Mogg so no complaints from me.

Neolara · 10/04/2020 09:40

My guess. Even the Tories leadership have realised she is a complete liability and don't trust her not to say something that will inflame the public, so they're deliberately keeping her out the way.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 10/04/2020 09:51

Someone on hereabouts put it well, so I'll paraphrase: Priti Patel would unplug your ventilator to charge her phone.

I expect if the virus comes near her, she'll shout at it and call it effing useless.

Peregrina · 10/04/2020 10:06

She might then be like Dominic Cummings in that the virus doesn't give the right answer to the self important question of "Don't you know who I am?"

MaxNormal · 10/04/2020 10:08

Apparently she's pushing ahead with her points based immigration system which has no route for lower paid immigrants, the ones currently dying for the rest of us.
She doesn't give a shit.

What is the average number of MN posts on anti-Tory themes before the Tory thread thought police come along with you people are disgusting or such like ? I'm guessing halfway through page 2!

vera99 · 10/04/2020 10:12

When Boris is better he should furlough her - for life !

Thread about this yesterday. Consensus that she is a liability being kept out of the public eye.
