Why are the 5G conspiracy theorists so aggressive?

Roostersmum2 · 06/04/2020 11:05

I've been sworn at and insulted for saying I don't believe the conspiracy theories about 5G, been told to fuck off because that I'm "uneducated" and a "sheep"

By conspiracy theories I'm referring to the people saying "the virus doesn't exist, what you're seeing is people dying from 5G radiation" and "5G is a government plot to reduce the population"

People I previously felt were relatively nice individuals who I had time for are swearing and ranting on social media, disowning and cutting off anybody who disagrees with their narrative.

I've never had a crossed word with these people in all of the years I've known them and now suddenly they have a them vs us mentality.

I've seen people regularly butt heads over politics and brexit but this is on another level, it's cult like.

Why are these people so aggressive?

They did say "whatever, people do travel the world you know"

And what? Carry the EM radiation with them?

Gronky · 06/04/2020 17:42

I'm not agreeing with them but I can understand their aggression; in their version of reality, the big bad government/NWO/Abrahamic cabal is actively threatening the safety of millions of people, including their loved ones. This is rather distinct from the standard conspiracy theory, in which there's a more acute overarching danger or past atrocity.

GammaRays · 07/04/2020 08:04

@Roostersmum2 Thank you and I'm sorry you have MH issues too, it sucks Thanks

Icantbelieveitsnotnutter · 07/04/2020 08:10

They are ALWAYS habitual cannabis smokers, cutting themselves off from society via radical ideologies.

thepeopleversuswork · 07/04/2020 08:38

I do think there is a definite correlation between low intelligence and the belief in conspiracies.

Just from observation it often seems to be people who have been made to feel thick quite a lot who hang on to these stories because they allow the holder a false sense of intellectual superiority.

The bright ones are the ones making money from it (ie from ludicrous YouTube channels). The consumers are usually sad, poorly educated people with limited critical faculties.

Christmastree43 · 07/04/2020 08:58

I know it's simplistic but the only person I know who believes the 5G thing (and also can't get their heads around A&Es being quiet while we're told the NHS is close to being overwhelmed) is a massive weed smoker and dealer... Never had a job, MH issues etc

RaspberryBubblegum · 07/04/2020 09:14

5G has been in the UK since may 2019 and whenever I point this out they either ignore me or say "yea but not as much as now" 😂 you can't win.

BeanodB · 13/04/2020 16:49

It’s very interesting reading this thread. I personally haven’t seen any posts on any social media postulating a 5G/COVID-19 conspiracy. Even if I search Facebook or Google for it, nothing comes up (wonder why🤔). And yet, here you all are, ranting and raving quite aggressively about invisible people apparently pushing their ideas onto you, calling “them” all the names under the sun and casting judgment on “them”. Have any of you looked in the mirror recently? I don’t see any comments from “them” arguing back. This is a one-sided “debate” with everyone fuelling each other’s sense of righteousness. Some would call that a cult.

Mimishimi · 14/04/2020 00:12

There is enough that is dodgy about this virus (Event 201 anyone?) without needing to attribute it to 5G.

Shitsgettingcrazy · 14/04/2020 06:51

I havent commented on this thread before.

But @BeanodB how is that possible? I have just put 5g corona virus in google and got absolutely loads of Information on it.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 14/04/2020 07:28

I wonder what conspiracy theorists (or anyone else really) can come up with as a reason for 2 members of remote Amazon Tribes to have died of Coronavirus?

These tribes don't have contact with the 'outside world'.

I din"t think 5G masts are there.

Dottysmum18 · 14/04/2020 08:41

I enjoyed this when I saw it

Why are the 5G conspiracy theorists so aggressive?
BeanodB · 14/04/2020 23:08

@Shitsgettingcrazy I’m still only seeing articles slapping down these so-called conspiracy theories without actually seeing what the theories are - they say the “theories” have been debunked, but I don’t see any actual debunking going on - to debunk a theory, you have to expose the details of the theory and then scientifically prove it wrong, I’m quite keen to see this detail, being the science nerd that I am! And I’m just not seeing any first-hand reports from any actual theorists about their theories!! So boring! It’s just like a he-said-she-said... let’s have the details please!!! Apparently a 2.5hr video was banned and taken off you tube the other day, I wonder if that went into more of the detail about the “theory” 🤔 wonder why it was banned - could have been ideal for the the 5G networks to use the video to convince the public how incredible the claims are, don’t you think?

LastTrainEast · 14/04/2020 23:20

BeanodB well there's no need to convince the public. We're only talking about village idiots getting together online to tell each other scary stories.

It's up to the people who see ghosts, ufos, secret lizards and magic mind control beams to come up with proof and they can't.

There's one group that is in close contact with the Galactic Authorities in their dreams. How would you go about disproving that even if you wanted to? lol

BeanodB · 18/04/2020 00:32

@LastTrainEast not sure about that one! I only joined mumsnet because I thought it was a caring, sharing place where I could get some good tips and helpful advice and support from other mums, being a new first time mum myself. But then I came across this thread and was quite taken aback by the scathing comments about people who are not even posting on here, so not even here to defend themselves, so it’s a bit like teenage girls bitching behind someone’s back, so now I’m not sure if I’m in the right place.

cybercontroller · 18/04/2020 01:18

There have been threads on mumsnet peddling this stuff. I suspect you look harder, unless you're just being goady.

BeanodB · 20/04/2020 16:35

@cybercontroller as I said I only joined mumsnet to get parenting tips, I’m not really interested in digging out weird stuff, just thought it was odd there was so much bitching on this thread as the other threads always seemed to be quite supportive or just a bit of a laugh. That’s why I commented - come on mumsnetters, keep it friendly! Especially in times like these!💓💓💓

LilacTree1 · 20/04/2020 17:05

I only know one conspiracy person - but she took years to tell me, so maybe I know more?

I think the pro lockdown fervour and corona hysteria is terrifying. If the 5G folk are like that, it must be quite....in your face?
