Why are the 5G conspiracy theorists so aggressive?

Roostersmum2 · 06/04/2020 11:05

I've been sworn at and insulted for saying I don't believe the conspiracy theories about 5G, been told to fuck off because that I'm "uneducated" and a "sheep"

By conspiracy theories I'm referring to the people saying "the virus doesn't exist, what you're seeing is people dying from 5G radiation" and "5G is a government plot to reduce the population"

People I previously felt were relatively nice individuals who I had time for are swearing and ranting on social media, disowning and cutting off anybody who disagrees with their narrative.

I've never had a crossed word with these people in all of the years I've known them and now suddenly they have a them vs us mentality.

I've seen people regularly butt heads over politics and brexit but this is on another level, it's cult like.

Why are these people so aggressive?

Sorry didn't mean to post twice!

Roostersmum2 · 06/04/2020 12:50

Apologies @GammaRays I didn't mean to offend. My post sounds very ignorant upon reflection.

I mentioned that only because the people I know who are being hostile about 5G, either have MH problems or smoke cannabis. I know not everybody with MH problems believe the 5G rubbish (I have a diagnosis myself)

esjee · 06/04/2020 12:51

CTs can be anyone, not just people with MH problems. I do believe MH, along with many other factors, is likely to make some more prone to believing in CTs, but no way do I think its reasonable to just dismiss believers of CTs as having mental health problems. It is becoming a far more widespread thing. Its to the point where almost everything has a CT explanation that many people believe - from celebrity relationships to mass shootings.

NemophilistRebel · 06/04/2020 13:14

*I once read something that said conspiracy theories allow non intellectual people to feel more intelligent than they are...

Yes!*

Yes x2

NemophilistRebel · 06/04/2020 13:17

I think the anti vaxxers are scared people who needed somthing to make them less scared

I then think this makes them more vulnerable to be targeting by other people spouting off with crazy conspiracy theories like the one world order, 5g etc

I feel sorry for them

Unfortunately some are my friends

They have said some very hurtful things relating to Coronavirus because of the act’s they now believe to be true

A heavily pregnant person doesn’t need to hear such things

Sosadandempty · 06/04/2020 13:22

My neighbour / friend started on about 5G the other night, but I pretended I hadn’t heard as I didn’t have the energy to argue over fantasy. She too will argue about stuff like that until the cows come home.

Which is not to say that I like 5G, think it is a good idea or think we need it, because I don’t.

NemophilistRebel · 06/04/2020 13:24

I’ve no idea what any of this even means but it made me realise this morning just how strange this situation has been making people
(I’m sure they’ve always been strange, but this is nothing I’ve seen before)

Why are the 5G conspiracy theorists so aggressive?
grindergirl · 06/04/2020 13:25

Aggression is often a by-product of fear. I don't give any credence to the 5g=coronavirus rantings, but I do have my own ''conspiracy theory'' about it. And it's that while the media focuses on nutters and their crackpot beliefs, it effectively stifles any other health concerns about 5g. There were dozensif not hundreds-of public meetings all over Ireland about the rollout of 5g here last summer. The question was often: ''if it's not considered safe for Brussels (HQ of the EU) and Geneva (HQ of the WHO), why is it considered safe for us?'' As profits come before people, concerns were ignored. Three 5g masts have since gone up in my own little town. Science isn't totally behind the insistence that the technology is safe. A US toxicology report issued by their Dept of Health pointed towards the high incidence of heart tumours in rats after being exposed to large doses of the radio frequency radiation used by mobile phones. This report has been mentioned in publications such as the Guardian and the BBC, so I don't think it's a false claim. 5g means more masts and more masts means more radiation. Whether it's herd immunity or smoking, the so-called ''experts'' of our day don't always get things right. Only with hindsight do we see whether they were right or wrong. To ask questions and have concerns doesn't necessarily mean you are a delusional fantasist. As far as I am aware, the ban on new 5g masts in Brussels and Geneva is still in place

TheSandman · 06/04/2020 13:33

Conspiracy theories are belief systems. Exactly the same as extreme religion.

The aggressive ones are exactly the same as religious fundamentalists, and there is exactly the same possibility of persuading them to give up their ideas or to be tolerant of those who do not share them, as there is with religious extremists.

With the added bonus that there are new exciting developments all the time unlike 'real' religions and science which are staid and boring by comparison.

Last week Chemtrails! and anti-vax , This week 5G! Week by week exciting new conspiracy theories evolve before your very eyes! (Well maybe not 'evolve' that would imply boring old Darwinism actually has some basis in fact... erm... Next week from the Giant Lizards that control everything - something else to be paranoid about and discover the truth behind! No thought required!)

People make a lot of money out of this sort of shit.

NemophilistRebel · 06/04/2020 13:40

Kate Shemirani is apparently a UK qualified nurse and her Facebook is currently full of the 5g stuff.
She’s even been interviewed on Australian news!

Not too sure I’d want to be cared for by her if I was in hospital

BigChocFrenzy · 06/04/2020 13:45

Belief in an all-powerful God is no longer widespread

so desperate, unstable people seize on other myths to explain a frightening situation

just to feel that someone somewhere is in control of all this,
even if if this is just the shape-shifting lizards in the RF

OldQueen1969 · 06/04/2020 14:21

I don't by any mean accept any of the wild conspiracy theories as fact, but I have often wondered if the cumulative effects of all the chemicals and technology infrastructure that have exploded in the last hundred years or so, and particularly the last 50 years, could be slightly implicated in the rise of certain cancers and conditions that have exploded in the last few decades. It may be that individually these things pose a minimal risk, but all together - who knows? But I'm sure there is research being done into that which I hope is level headed and as impartial as possible.

I'm a little wary of official narratives but that is entirely due to the fact that my Dad served at Maralinga and is a nuclear test veteran. He had to have his spleen removed some years ago due to a rare slow growing splenic lymphoma / blood cancer, and has also had treatment for two more different lymphomas in the last two years. that said, he's 80 and has also survived a massive heart attack and been treated for aortic aneurysm in the last few years - a Romany fortune teller told him he'd live till he was 90, so fingers crossed! he is part of the class action going on to try and get compensation for nuclear vets in this country - virtually every nuclear country automatically compensates their veterans who contract certain cancers - Reagan brought it in in the States - but our MOD insists that exposure to radiation is irrelevant to the health conditions and genetic mutations / birth defects suffered by vets and their descendants.

I'm lucky - my only sign of anything that has been linked as a descendant is multiple lipomas, some of which are a bit tender, and which are increasing with age, but hey ho, not life threatening so a few lumps and bumps don't bother me - others have much worse.

The MOD has spent far more fighting in the High Court to disprove liability and suppress information, than it would have cost to chuck a few grand, an apology and some recognition at the 1500 vets who were in at the start - a good number of whom have since died - the fight is petering out, and of course is on an appropriate back burner given current events.

So a bit of a tangent, but just wanted to illustrate that it is possible to have valid concerns and doubts about official stand points when one sees such venal and dismissive treatment of men once proud to serve their country.

As for 5G - pffft - as they say, truth will likely out one way or the other - I was a bit wobbly when they turned on the LHC but we're all still here - whether we're in the right timeline may be up for debate (joke) - unfortunately there have been enough genuine conspiracies and poor behaviour from TPTB on their own citizens to fuel stupidity. It is a sad and worrying time to be sure.

LastTrainEast · 06/04/2020 14:34

Some of the conspiracy stuff can be amusing, but it is damaging as more people believe what some guy on social media said over scientists, teachers etc.

I have enjoyed the flat earthers on Youtube and the Nibiru lot (that has faded out now quite a lot)

On there you see a lot of videos with a paypal link under them so you can see what their motive is. The true believers are always the angry ones and might not have a begging link at all.

Roostersmum2 · 06/04/2020 15:06

I'm sorry your father has been unwell oldqueen

I do think there is some merit in people saying 5G isn't necessarily a good thing, but people are running with that and turning it into "coronavirus isn't real, it's 5G" and "they've invented coronavirus to distract from 5G"

I don't think the two are mutually exclusive iyswim.

I've just shared an article about boris being in hospital and somebody who's very into the 5G conspiracy has just commented and said he doesn't believe any of it and the media is deceiving us.

nauticant · 06/04/2020 15:22

Quite a lot of this will be Uncle Vlad's trolls.

It's easy to look at this and see it also as a conspiracy theory, but Russia is active in pushing disinformation to cause instability:

OldQueen1969 · 06/04/2020 15:25

Thank you @Roostersmum2 - much appreciated.

I can't get my head round the idea that Coronavirus has been engineered as a front for 5G - and as for the nanobots - well, it may technically possible, but given the breakdown and error rate of other basic widespread technology, I reckon they'd be full of flaws and the least efficient method of transmission ever......

Someone else upthread astutely observed that aggression and fear are strongly linked, and also I believe our brains will fill a vacuum of knowledge with speculation according to our own biases because it helps when you feel out of control - mostly it's harmless and people can eventually rationalise / accept new evidence. Some however become so invested they define themselves by the conspiracy, which is a sad and stagnant way to live.

Shinesweetfreedom · 06/04/2020 15:40

Well I thought Bill Gates said we will all have some digital indicator about who has had the virus and who hasn’t,human implantable dot tattoos.

mencken · 06/04/2020 15:47

anyone really fussed about 5G and similar 'radiashun' issues would not be on the internet and certainly wouldn't be carrying a bricklike smartphone.

Fortunately I don't seem to know anyone quite this stupid, although there's always time.

just slap and ignore. sorry - don't slap, social distancing. Swear at and ignore.

steppemum · 06/04/2020 15:52

conspiracy theorist: the 5G is causing corona virus.

normal person: why are there cases in Africa then, they don't have 5G

conspiracy theorist: ummmm

ErrolTheDragon · 06/04/2020 16:06

At least the bloke who said it was gods judgement for Northern Ireland decriminalising abortion, when asked why then it started in China could fall back on 'mysterious ways' .

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/04/2020 16:29

mencken you forgot listening to the radio, turning the lights on etc. etc.

5G isn't the cause of more masts, upgraded antennas go on the same ones, replacing the existing ones. Additional masts are few and far between these days.

Repeater cells aren't specifically for 5G either. They are to improve coverage, strength of signal.

But there's no telling some people...

!!!!

I actually said this to one of them the other day, but i referenced india. It was this that lead to me being told to fuck off and subsequently blocked.

They did say "whatever, people do travel the world you know" Grin

It’s difficult to have a conversation from either side as both sides are giving abuse, either swearing or calling the other side thick.
