The curious case of quorn mince and covid 19

I literally haven't seen any for sale in any shop since all this started, even before the 12 week shutdown. Did the nation really panic buy quorn mince? Why isn't there any for sale?

I can't get Quorn sausages at the moment for my vegetarian DD. She doesn't like any other varieties but I've bought Linda McCartney Lincolnshire today which she hasn't tried before. Fingers crossed! Luckily I already had quorn pieces in the freezer and she eats pulses and eggs which I haven't had too much problem getting so I batch cooked a 5 bean chilli for her on Monday.

pigsDOfly · 01/04/2020 14:48

Quorn mince is vile stuff.

However, the Quorn pieces work well in a stir fry.

They changed their packaging, or at least some of it, recently, so that could account for a bit of a shortage. I've found this with other things when the packaging has been changed.

People who don't normally buy it have probably been buying it up though to keep in the freezer, 'just in case'.

I found this with Oatley when people were panic buying and there was very little milk. Not a carton of Oaley to be had in Tesco.

TheSpottedZebra · 01/04/2020 14:50

They had quorn mince in my Aldi today.
So if you know where I live, and you can face joining the MASSIVE QUEUE to shop, go there!

Gwynfluff · 01/04/2020 14:54

Quorn chunks were purchased today but had been in low supply earlier this years. We have e one veggie daughter who prefers quorn and one who prefers soya. On balance I think I prefer soya. But where’s the dried stuff? Thought that had stopped being produced?

poppet31 · 01/04/2020 14:54

It's bizarre - I went to Morrison's yesterday and it was really well stocked. Apart from the vegetarian freezer section which was completely empty. I assumed the freezer was maybe broken, but perhaps not.

bluewafflewithmayo · 01/04/2020 14:55

Eat your own shit instead. The flavour and texture will be remarkably similar I'd wager.

Coatandhat · 01/04/2020 21:50

@Moregruel I agree. Last week our cupboards were very bare and it felt like suddenly everyone had turned vegetarian. But I found Quorn mince and some other useful stuff in Iceland.

KinkyDoritowithsparkleson · 01/04/2020 22:04

It was to do with labelling and allergy information I think, since January. It's starting to come back now finally.

KinkyDoritowithsparkleson · 01/04/2020 22:08

Although they claim veganuary, which is odd as it has egg in, as pp said. The vegan pieces have been readily available here the entire time but ignored as they taste like fluff.

rooty123 · 01/04/2020 22:08

Quorn mince in Aldi this week, hadn't seen it for ages though

VivaLeBeaver · 01/04/2020 22:10

Quorn has been in short supply since before Xmas so not Evan veganary. I did read somewhere they’d been changing production or something so there had been a blip and it should improve. Then coronavirus happened so god knows.

Dd is vegi and coeliac so it’s a nightmare.

VivaLeBeaver · 01/04/2020 22:11

Tesco own brand meat free mince is ok.

VivaLeBeaver · 01/04/2020 22:12

Oh and morrisons own brand sausages are nice. In the freezer, in a box.

PopcornAndWine · 01/04/2020 22:13

Dh managed to get some last week but it's the first time we've seen any in months! Really bizarre, wonder why?

GrumpyHoonMain · 01/04/2020 22:13

Quorn is a myo/mycoprotein. Not soya.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 01/04/2020 22:15

I’m sure it’s driven by people who don’t usually eat it but who want to have it ‘just in case’.

That’s what I was actually told in Tesco and again in Iceland, when I asked where in Gaia’s name it had all went. I know the staff, before I’m accused of harassing them. Apparently when the meat products went, they started buying the vegetarian/vegan stuff. The oat milk, etc sold out because apparently some bright spark had suggested it, on tv or online, I’m not sure which, that it was excellent to have a few in because it doesn’t need refrigerated and is long life. The fuckers were probably taking the piss out of vegetarians/vegans before this all kicked off!

Than fuck I’m a prepper as milk products do nasty things to me.

jmh740 · 01/04/2020 22:28

I did an iceland delivery and a lot of things were missing so I nipped to lidl managed to get 3 small bags of quorn mince felt like I'd won the lottery 😁

MrEzraGoldberg · 01/04/2020 22:37

Heaps of quorn stuff available here, not sure about mince but all the other stuff, fillets, fish fingers, quorn slices...

Kittywampus · 02/04/2020 00:27

There's been a shortage of quorn for ages. I thought it was because of all of the floods earlier in the year.

Just checked their Facebook page - it is full of comments asking why people can't get hold
of the mince and pieces - their stock response is that they are experiencing high demand and are working hard to increase production. Seems to
predate the worst of the current covid-19 panicking buying too.

Reading between the lines, they seem to have decreased production of some of the classic products in order to focus more on their new convenience food and vegan range! Angry

Ifeel1000yearsold · 02/04/2020 07:05

They have it in my Tesco

ochreheart · 02/04/2020 07:08

Shopping for a family of vegetarians and can getting plant based products in most supermarkets but not the quorn fillets. I think this will be the case (and with pasta/tins whilst the advice remains to shop as little as possible. It's not stockpiling, it's people having enough freezer/store cupboard ingredients to feed a family for at least a week

SouthWestmom · 02/04/2020 07:40

We are all vegan or vegetarian and getting any processed product has been really hard. Freezers empty here of most things except £5 for an incredible burger pack. So that would be £15 for 6!

MoreGruel · 02/04/2020 08:36

The fuckers were probably taking the piss out of vegetarians/vegans before this all kicked off!

I said exactly this to my husband yesterday 😑
