Extremely noisy yet unnecessary road works while people stuck inside flats

Should unnecessary roadworks be postponed until people are no longer stuck inside?

I don't mean gas works, or works connected to other essential things such as water, electricity, internet, phone or whatever.

I mean for example creating a cycle lane or changing a road that had been the same for decades.

My opinion is that they should wait until the lockdown is over. I feel that people are already stressed and fearful, and noise is a form of torture.

Please add your views. Thanks.

Better to do it when the roads are quieter than when it causes absolute mayhem.

I had to listen (and feel, as it made the house shake daily from before 7am) to an entire mini housing estate being built next door. It's horrible, especially as building work necessarily goes through summer when I'm not working. It's shit, but it would be worse if you had to fight your way through closures and gridlock to get to work and school because they waited to do everything until the maximum number of people need to be back on the roads.

esjee · 31/03/2020 15:17

No, its the best time to do them.

MrsKypp · 31/03/2020 15:18

@MitziK

I see your point.

Surely now is the time to do every bit of roadworks going?! Confused

MrsKypp · 31/03/2020 15:20

Except that these roadworks are not necessary. That's what I meant - if they were, then of course now would be ideal.

@PotteringAlong

Thanks for your reply.

YABU. Now is a great time to be doing roadworks.

NeutralJanet · 31/03/2020 15:21

I was just thinking the other day that I really hope the council takes advantage of the lockdown to fix all the potholes, our local roads are absolutely shocking. If they could get them all filled before schools go back that might save me a fortune on my next MOT and getting the suspension fixed yet again.

It’s a great time IF the workers are safe-get all the roads repaired now so there’s no disruption when the commutes return.

They have just taken the opportunity to repaint the Abbey Road zebra crossing. Look how shiny it is[[https://www.earthcam.com/world/england/london/abbeyroad/?cam=abbeyroad_uk]]

MrsKypp · 31/03/2020 16:55

Repairs yes, but this is to create a new cycle lane in a perfectly good road.

Love cycle lanes, but it's not essential work right now.

Definitely a good time to avoid traffic jams, just very tough on people in flats right next to it considering they are stuck home possibly with young children, elderly, unwell, stressed etc etc

I am personally well away from the noise. Just thinking about my fellow citizens.

OP this is me
Thank you for thinking of us.

They stopped two days ago, I do wonder if they realised the mental health toll meant we needed a break.

MrsKypp · 31/03/2020 17:07

@AutumnRose1

Hi, good they stopped near you. Yes, exactly, mental health needs boosting now, not destroying with noise.

They were making a total racket today on the works I was talking about. I can hear it here, but only faintly - I am a long way from where they are working which is a main road with lots of people in flats.
