What are people doing about food shopping?

Can't get online deliveries. Have enough in to last till end of week. Would rather not go shopping but will have to eventually. What's everyone else doing? People keep posting how busy supermarkets are. I work with a vulnerable group, I'm terrified I might pick something up and pass it on.

Knew the shit was going to hit the fan from this virus at end January so started stocking up then. Have enough supplies to last a good few months, but bread might be a problem. DH wants to go out at the weekend but I am in the vulnerable group so dont really want him to go. If he does, it will be very early morning when hopefully there wont be too many people about.

I’d like to got to Waitrose to get some nice bits if possible anyone know if the queues are bad there?

lubeybooby · 26/03/2020 11:08

I'm fairly rural but thankfully within waitrose delivering distance. Keeping an eye on delivery slots and managing to get one a week. Substitutes and unavailable haven't been too silly. We also have gousto for evening meals (well 4 per week anyway)

Tarttlet · 26/03/2020 11:45

@Paperdaisychain if you have a local facebook group maybe try on there or on twitter? It's very variable across the country so no one on here can really advise you!!

I popped out earlier to get bread, milk and eggs to drop off to my parents, and it was a lot quieter than even a few days ago, and pretty well stocked. As long as you aren't in the shielded group I would go, change clothes when you get in (and obviously wash hands!), wipe things down and clean the door handle etc. Ideally hoping to be able to just go out once a week, but I was surprised that it was actually okay.

I got groceries today, including toilet roll - hooray.

There was a queue at the large ASDA so I went to another supermarket. The, 'little ASDA' had cold meat, chicken, salsa, tortilla chips, bacon, chipolata sausages, mustard, margarine etc. Which I purchased. There was a member of staff counting how many people were coming into the store.

I also went to Morrisons, huge queue outside again but it was moving. Inside the supermarket people being told to wait in one queue away from the checkouts and observing the social distancing markers on the floor. Then go to a checkout operator that is free when advised by a member of staff, rather like the Post Office do.

The tannoy announced that no one was at the self scan so along I went and scanned:

Tortilla wraps
Pork chops
Loo roll
Coriander
Apples
Parsnips
Garlic
Caramel chocolate eggs (Crème egg sized)

Yep, no problem. Only thing I'm now on the hunt for is Buttercup Cough Syrup. None in Boots or the supermarkets.

I've made shepherds pie for tonights tea. We will have crumb fish and chips tomorrow. I have not altered our menu at all.

I got nearly everything on my list in Sainsburys today. Wine was being restocked when I was there so got that last. No pasta at all, not much soup and had to get a bigger bag of rice than I would normally. Fresh stuff was quite well stocked.
I had to queue (in the sunshine) for about 20 minutes to get in. Most people were fine but one got stroppy with the security asking to be let in. He told her she had to queue like everyone else.

Crunchymum · 26/03/2020 14:07

I have an online Morrisons shop due on Sat (booked 2 weeks previously) and every time I log on, more stuff I have ordered is not there? Currently missing all fresh fruit and veg and meat!! Plus loads of other things that we need.

I also spotted this, so now I'm afraid to edit my order incase I lose the slot altogether but I assume lots of stuff will be missing (wont know what until midday Sat!!)

My DC has been identified as vulnerable, but as her carer it isn't massively clear if I need to isolate with her or can nip out for supplies? Trying to get an answer but it's hard.

We are running low on things and we won't know until Saturday PM what we have / don't have?

Jellybean27 · 26/03/2020 20:28

Pretty sure the guidance says you don’t have to isolate alongside, but to be extra diligent with hand washing etc.

Jellybean27 · 26/03/2020 20:29

That applies to extremely vulnerable too from guidance.

jobhunter7 · 26/03/2020 20:39

Do any of the supermarkets have any delivery slots? Or am I best making a dash for it and hoping I don't catch anything?

It looks like I may have to do that:

Have stocked up a little more than usual... but not madly... but I'll be out of things to eat within a fortnight.

myohmywhatawonderfulday · 26/03/2020 20:46

In my area some businesses who used to supply to restaurants have become local veg/meat box sellers.

I have got a veg box coming tomorrow and I added extra fruit, bread, cheese and milk. They also do eggs but I have a lot of that. It's a great price and they deliver too. I found mine by word of mouth but my sister found hers (in another town) through the local facebook page.

stargirl1701 · 26/03/2020 20:50

Switched to local suppliers who are all delivering.

cantata · 26/03/2020 22:25

I'm going to the shops as I normally do, and buying the food I need for the day, as I normally do.

The abnormal thing is that we are let in one at a time, and everyone is giving one another death stares if they happen to be in the same aisle as one another by accident. It's very, very sad.
