What are people doing about food shopping?

Can't get online deliveries. Have enough in to last till end of week. Would rather not go shopping but will have to eventually. What's everyone else doing? People keep posting how busy supermarkets are. I work with a vulnerable group, I'm terrified I might pick something up and pass it on.

Yeah I don't think they are releasing the deliveries only click and collect. As it keeps crashing then only click and collect left

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 25/03/2020 00:41

I'm not in any at risk group, but am doing the social distancing.
Only going out when need to.
So I'm going to the shops when we need food getting (I'm lucky in that I have a good one a 2 minute walk away to the next street)
Glad the restrictions have been put in place as to what you can buy as have noticed the shelves being fuller the past couple of days due to idiot panic buyers stripping the shelves.

MayDayHelp · 25/03/2020 00:43

I can’t even get click and collect where I live :(

Finally managed to get to the end of the Ocado queue just now only to find no delivery slots available at all, so that was a waste of time. Have tried all the other supermarkets and it’s the same.

Really don’t want to have to go to a supermarket. Picked up a few bits today in my very small town by going into three local shops. I figured this is lower risk than going to a big supermarket, but who knows? I didn’t have a choice. Won’t last us long though and then I don’t know, guess I’ll have to do it again. Can’t get all the things we usually get in the local shops, and it’s more expensive, though it’s a small community here and it cheered me up a lot to see a couple of friends while I was out (from a distance). I think I will just have to get more creative/cook more from scratch and the kids will have to get less fussy.

eaglejulesk · 25/03/2020 00:56

I plan to go to the supermarket once a week, as usual. Hopefully the ridiculous panic buying will have ceased by then!!! We don't go into lockdown until tonight, but the people who don't seem to understand that supermarkets will still be open are out in full force today Confused

LoseLooseLucy · 25/03/2020 01:00

Unbelievably I've managed to book a delivery with Asda for tomorrow, I'm not holding my breath that I'll get most of the things though.

PumpkinP · 25/03/2020 01:43

Where does everyone live. I’m in se London and the supermarkets are still quite empty. Still no toilet roll or pasta in Sainsbury’s today

LoseLooseLucy · 25/03/2020 02:10

I love in Manchester. In the Asda shop I've booked there was no toilet roll, pasta, beans, sugar, paracetamol or tomato ketchup.

LoveBeingAMum555 · 25/03/2020 21:46

DS1 is one of the most high risk and being told not to leave the house for 12 weeks so we are hoping to do the same. Nearest Asda and Tesco is 25 miles away and local Lidl is always busy. The local farmshop does deliver, but its expensive and a bit limited. I have a delivery booked for this Saturday but can't get onto website to amend the order at the moment. Its a worry, rationally I know we are not going to starve but this is a something we could do without at the moment.

Springbubble912 · 25/03/2020 22:01

Shopped today - plenty of fresh produce - still some gaps though . Not busy , people on the whole trying to stay apart . Got there at 10.

feelingverylazytoday · 25/03/2020 22:12

I'm going to the shops, I don't drive so planning on going every 4 days (for me and my daughter). They were doing the queuing up outside thing today, but we only had to wait 5 minutes or so. Shelves were reasonably well stocked, everyone kept their distance. For some reason we didn't have lots of panic buying in our shops, perhaps because a lot of people walk like me, you can only carry so much home.

AlexaShutUp · 25/03/2020 22:13

I'm in a higher risk category so don't really want to go to the supermarket, but eventually, I think I'll have no choice.Sad

I do have a delivery booked for 2 April, and can probably just about manage with what we've got until then, but no idea what to do after that. Can't even get a click and collect slot, let alone an online delivery. The Morrison's boxes are all sold out and most of the smaller local suppliers are not taking orders from new customers. Going to try another farm shop tomorrow, but failing that, I'll just have to take the risk and go out. It's good to hear that the shops are at least a bit better stocked.

AlexaShutUp · 25/03/2020 22:15

Just to add, the poor availability of food supplies is my single biggest source of stress through all of this, because ultimately, I'm going to have to put myself at risk.

Scruffyoak · 25/03/2020 22:16

Our shops are pretty full here apparently. I've not been in as I prepped before hand but seen fully stocked shelves on fb in smaller shops.

Hannah021 · 25/03/2020 22:22

I buy and cook once a week cuz i need my veggies, my freezer is small i cant get frozen veggies to put there :/
once a week is a lot for food, i want to cut it down to once a fortnight

cherryblossomgin · 25/03/2020 22:22

In my area some supermarkets are doing one in one out and it's about a 30-45 minute wait to get in. But some are quiet. We did a a big shop Tuesday enough for about a week and a half.

Maybe try going to the supermarket that is less popular and you could take some disinfectant wipes for the trolley, wear a mask or a scarf and use hand gel.

Ariela · 25/03/2020 22:29

I would say 10 or 11am is a good time to go, after the early rush and still some stuff on the shelf - went yesterday for someone and shop was fine no queue to go in to speak of

DrivingMsCrazy · 26/03/2020 00:16

I went to local Lidl today around noon. I'm in Scotland. Well stocked with fresh stuff, fruit veg meat etc. Tinned and frozen were a bit depleted, less choice than usual but still some stock of most things. Shop was quiet and everyone spaced out well. Only thing I couldn't get from my list was tinned tuna. There was toilet roll in stock too! Smile

DiscordandRhyme · 26/03/2020 00:21

I was very lucky. Day watching Ocado page for 2 hours on Tuesday to get a Thursday slot -- minor miracle, honestly.

I'm not sure if I'm classed as a vulnerable person though.

Friendsofmine · 26/03/2020 01:58

I just got to the front of the Morrisons queue onto the site after 2 hours and there are no slots except tomorrow aka Thursday night. I don't need food tomorrow, was hoping to book for Monday on when I will be running out. I didn't want to buy for now as I don't need it Confused and didn't want to take from someone who needs it now.

It isn't obvious what to do for the best sometimes is it.

Megan2018 · 26/03/2020 02:02

We are on self isolation for 14 days, so eating what we have. We were well stocked though and apparently have Ocado just before the 14 days is up (fingers tightly crossed).

goldenorbspider · 26/03/2020 10:30

I'm in the north west, I'm working Saturday so plan on going to my local Aldi after work so I'm child free

Went to Waitrose after walking the dog yesterday - from the car park it was one out one in with a chap cleaning the trolley handles - even got some loo roll which was good as we were down to our last two rolls . There was less stock than usual for non perishables and frozen but plenty of fresh fruit and veg and meat and normal volume of pet food . Live in West London .

Paperdaisychain · 26/03/2020 10:43

We have been able to get deliveries from Sainsbury’s (long time pass holder) and Amazon (Prime). The supermarkets around here are well stocked but you need to queue to get in so we plant to stick to home delivery when possible

Vebrithien · 26/03/2020 10:59

Dilemma here. Will need shopping in the middle of next week. Can't get any delivery slots or click and collect.
Could go to the nearest supermarket, which is small and has limited vegetarian food at the best of times.
Or, drive 10 miles to the next big supermarket, which is usually fab for everything vege. I'll also need pregnancy vitamins and iron supplements, so could get them in the in-store pharmacy, rather than having to go to another pharmacy.

Am leaning towards the driving to the big supermarket, hoping that there is likely to be more stock. No family locally, friends all have small children that can't be left.

Duchessofblandings · 26/03/2020 11:02

Do you have small, local or farm shops?

We’re ok for a good while but last time I ventured out I stuck to the small, local shop. Then, about a week ago now I suppose, they were well stocked with most things, had already taped distances for queuing and the staff were wearing latex gloves. It felt much safer than a large shop.
