Wtf? Surely that’s going directly against the lockdown announcement? How can they consider selling trainers to be providing an essential service?

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 23/03/2020 22:33

Now this is clearly breaching the rules.

Get on .Gov or call 101 to see what you should do.

And name and shame all over social media.

Tiddlytubbies · 23/03/2020 22:33

😂😂😂 Mike Ashley at his finest!! I'm sure Boris will disagree!!

eosmum · 23/03/2020 22:35

I’m thinking that they will be put right about that. But really are they for real.

Good grief. Shame them into doing the right thing.

...

Sports Direct have told staff they are essential
reeree95 · 23/03/2020 22:38

The email came through at 8:46.. there is currently a conference call being held. Was is bad timing or just mr Ashley doing the usual, profit over people.

eosmum · 23/03/2020 22:38

I’m hoping she’s mis read it somehow. Waiting for her to send it to me.

Sports Direct owners have always been money grabbing scum. It's a disgrace.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/03/2020 22:40

They don't sell food or medicine so aren't an essential shop. The police and council need to shut them down if they open.

GetRid · 23/03/2020 22:40

Only ships allowed are:

Supermarkets
Pharmacies
Newsagents
Hardware stores
Banks
Pet shops
Post Offices
Petrol stations
Vets
Retail shops in hospitals
Laundrettes
Funeral homes

reeree95 · 23/03/2020 22:41

@eosmum I've put the email on this post

Elieza · 23/03/2020 22:51

Yeah a new outfit for the gym that’s now closed is top of my priority list for sure. Not.

They must be mental. Cheeky money grabbing shits that clearly don’t give a rats ass about their staffs wellbeing.

AhoyMrBeaver · 23/03/2020 22:55

I hope they're publicly and thoroughly shamed over this. Bloody grot shop.

eosmum · 23/03/2020 22:59

@reeree95 sorry can’t see it. She’s sent me a quote about them helping everyone stay fit and healthy. I’m honestly disgusted.

Let's hope the first "customers" in each branch tomorrow are police officers.

CatBatCat · 23/03/2020 23:04

He's hooked onto the "daily exercise is allowed" line as an excuse to open.

His email here twitter.com/robynnleighhh/status/1242193285831184384?s=19

Rosehip10 · 23/03/2020 23:04

Its finance chief, Chris Wootton, wrote to all workers within 30 minutes of the prime minister’s announcement that all non-essential retailers must shut down to help stop the virus’ spread.

We stock a huge range of sports equipment designed for exercising at home ... indeed home fitness is the number one trending topic on social media after coronavirus itself.

Against the backdrop of the closure of gyms the demand for these types of products has increased exponentially as the population looks to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Consequently, we are uniquely well placed to help keep the UK as fit and healthy as possible during this crisis and thus our Sports Direct and Evans Cycles stores will remain open where possible to allow us to do this (in accordance with the Government’s current social distancing guidance).

There is no one else that has the range of product and range of stores to make this reasonably accessible for the whole population.

BeetrootRocks · 23/03/2020 23:06

Nice PR but you're not on the list.

reeree95 · 23/03/2020 23:06

@eosmum Ashley is a joke, staff being told daily just to use gloves when cashing up, H&S signs being sent out outlining anti bac wipes etc are to be available all over the store which won't be being implemented and his latest update about half an hour ago is 'business as usual'. No care whatsoever for his staff.

mommydragon · 23/03/2020 23:08

OMG...are they even serious... they think they are somehow now giving an essential service to the nation by selling exercise wear to people for the one daily exercise the PM has announced??? There is just no getting through to some people... name and shame and put it on social media. I really hope someone makes them see sense sooner rather than later.

BeetrootRocks · 23/03/2020 23:09

Oh sports direct email was on newsnight just now.

Our branch sells footwear and clothing. No way can you spin it as essential for nation health!

This does not look good publicity wise tbh

Namechange2020onceagain · 23/03/2020 23:12

What a cunt. I'm never shopping there again. Time this awful shop with zero hour contracts goes bust.
