There could well be a case for that part of the business staying open, as would cover essential repair services.

However that would not extend to the showroom part.

The showroom part should definitely be closed.

Bluntness100 · 24/03/2020 07:26

He said “show rooms” not dealerships. The servicing element can stay open. The op never said she works in a show room. She said she works in a dealership. The show room is retail and needs to be shut to the public. The dealership it’s self doesn’t need to close for repairs etc,

Ipadipod · 24/03/2020 07:28

Sorry just seen garages under the exemption column

All staff have to go in though including salesmen

Well you shouldn't have member sod that public coming into the showroom.

However it's unfortunately up to your company if they decide to deploy your skills to the part of the business still open (assuming your contract has the standard "other reasonable duties" clause).

You should at least not have many people there so should be able to stay at least 2 meters away from people.

However to comply with the spirit of the regulations, the showroom should be completely shut and only the minimum staff needed to run the repairs section in. The phone could be diverted.

The aim is to have as fewer people outside the home as possible. The phone calls could be easily managed by a diversion. If your company insists more people go in than are essential, it shows their true colours.

it shows their true colours it sure does Sad

This new guidance specifically mentions car showrooms as businesses that should close so there's your answer. Hope it helps.

Oops just seen upthread that someone already posted. Sorry! Saw the document online and remembered I'd seen your thread! 😁

I currently work in a furniture showroom, not sure if this will be classed as home and hardware. Had no contact from work for the last week. Currently on isolation and would really rather not have to go back in just now.

Apolloanddaphne · 24/03/2020 10:07

Furniture showrooms will have to close. I had a e mail from one near us which I have used before saying they are closing.

UniKittie · 24/03/2020 11:26

@Apolloanddaphne phoned my work and we are still open. Currently having to decide whether to hold out in the hope they will shut or having to quit😔

daisychain01 · 24/03/2020 11:37

I would never normally suggest this, @Unikittie, but in your situation, I would say you have developed a cough and you need to self-isolate as there is currently no testing available. Do not quit, there is no need. Protect yourself first and foremost, buy yourself 14 days and see how things develop (almost on a daily basis currently!)

Your business is not critical and they are putting your, and the country at risk by refusing to budge. Many, many companies have already proactively decided to close their doors and in so doing they are protecting their reputation by being a good ethical employer.

daisychain01 · 24/03/2020 11:39

Sorry are you already on a self-isolation due to CV? If so, just extend it by saying you still aren't better.

Likethebattle · 24/03/2020 11:46

The dealership we are picking car up from is closing up today. Car is being delivered at some point today. Surely yours will be following suit, just tying up any loose ends?

UniKittie · 24/03/2020 13:20

@daisychain01 currently isolating as my daughter had a cough, we have been isolating for 7 days now.

My husband has been identified for a key worker and his hours at working are changing so need to think about childcare now.
