Will car dealers still be open?

My sister works in car sales for a main dealer, she’s unsure if that means her workplace has to be closed?

Is buying a car an essential activity?

Of course dealerships will shut.

MoveOnTheCards · 23/03/2020 20:47

Really? Of course it will be. It’s hardly an essential function.

Rosehip10 · 23/03/2020 20:47

Why are people having huge difficulties understanding the phrase "non essential" Confused

Bulb1976 · 23/03/2020 20:48

She thinks her employer still won’t shut

I had an email earlier today to say that the dealership i bought my car was closing anyway...

I do have an MOT booked, so not too sure what happens there

Toothsil · 23/03/2020 20:49

They have no choice now. Of course it should close, it's not essential in any way!

ChequerBoard · 23/03/2020 20:50

Doh! In what circumstance would buying a new car be an essential activity?!?

PleaseStopCrying · 23/03/2020 20:50

Of course they will close they have just been ordered to by the Government.

Coffeenofilter · 23/03/2020 20:50

Cars??!! For real??!!

Non-essentials:
Clothes
Electronics
Sporting equipment
Craft supplies
Furniture
Home wares
DIY supplies

Essential:
Food
Medicine
New cars

Hmm
StealthMama · 23/03/2020 20:50

Then they will at the very least be fined op.

MoveOnTheCards · 23/03/2020 20:51

Her employer has no choice. She needs to stay at home (as do all her colleagues).

Bulb1976 · 23/03/2020 20:52

I want it to be closed, it’s safer for staff and customers

Nicknacky · 23/03/2020 20:53

My dad works for a dealership. They were doing their best not to close and only relented tonight and would they would shut on wed.

RealityCheck24601 · 23/03/2020 20:54

My sister works for Mercedes. They announced they were closing this afternoon

makingmiracles · 23/03/2020 21:01

What happens if non essential businesses don’t close? Dp works in timber distribution and they are being total dicks about the whole thing so far, refusing to even acknowledge there might be a chance they have to close...

Bulb1976 · 23/03/2020 21:02

She just messaged her boss he told her it’s business as usual

I'm wondering if MOTs will be suspended for cars like they have for heavy goods vehicles.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 23/03/2020 21:04

Oh dear. There must be some way to report businesses who are staying open when they should be closed! That's disgraceful! Absolute disregard for people's health and possibly lives.

Pipandmum · 23/03/2020 21:08

I've seen elsewhere that car repair shops are considered essential, nit dealerships though they are often attached.

Just put a deposit on a new car which is due next week as my PCP has ended so not sure what's happening with that.

Doyoumind · 23/03/2020 21:09

The police will be round to shut them and there won't be any customers anyway. How is that business as usual?

Random18 · 23/03/2020 21:13

Arnold Shark is shutting. Was announced before lockdown

MeadowHay · 23/03/2020 21:13

To be fair, my DH is soon to start a job as frontline NHS staff in a neighbouring town. We were thinking of buying a car as he has his licence and it will massively cut down his commute now that the traffic has died down and the trains are reduced services. Guess we won't be able to now so he might have real difficulty getting to and from work.

NemophilistRebel · 23/03/2020 22:49

We’ve had a message that our company is staying open Confused

ArtisanBreadBin · 23/03/2020 22:50

There are a couple of threads about car dealers...

Likethebattle · 23/03/2020 22:55

I need my new car to actually go and get shopping as I live in the fuck end of nowhere. I know it’s been mot’d and serviced and hopefully can pick up at some point. If not we’ll struggle to get supplies. I have a lot of tines and packets.
